‎The story of the illustrated book from the earliest printed books to the present day, told through the collections of the V&A's National Art Library. With the invention of mechanized printing in Germany in the 15th century, illustrated books were no longer the preserve of the elite and became a source of knowledge, instruction and pleasure for a wider audience. Traditional accounts of the illustrated book survey its history in terms of technological advances, from illumination to hand-drawn illustrations and photography. This study offers a new approach, grouping books by subject - from natural history and travel to art, architecture and fashion. Gathered here are some of the most influential and compelling examples of the illustrated book, all chosen from the collections of the National Art Library at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Each chapter starts with a general introduction to the subject, followed by key examples accompanied by narrative captions. The commentaries range beyond the illustrations to consider the whole book, the design, typeface, binding, inks and papers. Many of the books are not on display to the public and have been specially photographed for this volume. Most examples have been chosen for their significance, being innovative and beautiful. But humble books, often overlooked in histories, have also been selected, when particularly effective in their field, or simply memorable. From beautiful printed Psalters and Books of Hours, to striking natural history books such as Audubon's Birds of America, La Fontaine's Fables illustrated by Marc Chagall, Serlio's treatise on architecture and Owen Jones's Grammar of Ornament, this book gives a fascinating overview of some of the finest illustrated books ever created. He does not aim at anarchy, but rather the rule of metabolic necessity: ?Art is total play.? In this exhibition, Meese presents a new body of works, which capture the interplay of interior and exterior worlds, combining the phantasmagoria of the imagination with the bric- -brac of mundane reality. To him, art is osmosis. His paintings are filled with photosynthesis and mimicry, which allows us to enter the counter world. The self portraits and nudes point out that all self portraits are nude and all nudes are self portraits. Within the self portraits you can find the childhood of everything, with the ultimate self portrait being the embryo. According to Meese this exhibition celebrates ?the birth of the Gesamtkunstwerk?. This theme is also visualized in the large scale painting TOTAL RECALL (THE R.I.P.-DIDDLOIDEN ARE BACK TO FIGHT THE ?KAMPF UM KUNST (BIRTH OF GESAMTKUNSTWERK)). Cet artiste fascinant a suivi sa propre voie au sein du mouvement n o-impressionniste, restant toujours profond ment attach sa r gion natale d'Occitanie. L'exposition rassemble pr s de quatre-vingts ?uvres de toutes les p riodes de sa carri re, mettant en lumi re la profonde originalit et l'extraordinaire sensibilit de ce peintre du quotidien. Laug s'est inspir de son environnement imm diat et a d peint les alentours de sa maison de Cailhau, les fleurs de son jardin, sa famille et ses amis avec beaucoup de simplicit et d' l gance. Sa technique tr s pure consistait juxtaposer les trois couleurs primaires en points ou en treillis dans une variation tr s personnelle de la m thode divisionniste. Sensibilit inhabituelle Par de nombreuses exp rimentations, seul dans la lumi re blouissante du sud de la France, Laug fait sienne la th orie des couleurs de Seurat et Signac. Son ?uvre profond ment originale t moigne de son intuition de la couleur dans de magnifiques natures mortes o bouquets de coquelicots et marguerites c toient fruits m rs et rameaux d'amandiers en fleurs. La peinture de Laug est un "art d'une sensibilit exacerb e", comme le note son ami Bourdelle. G om trie, perspective et lumi re Comme Monet et ses cath drales, Laug peint par s ries, repr sentant l'infini les routes autour de Cailhau. Dans des paysages rigoureusement construits, il cherche rendre les nuances de la lumi re et le passage des saisons dans le d tail de leurs variations. Il arpente les routes avec l'atelier-caravane qu'il a con u pour peindre d'apr s nature, cr ant des compositions pures qui d gagent un doux sentiment de calme, avec un sens de la composition tr s g om trique et un int r t pour le vide. La technique rigoureuse qui caract rise les portraits de Laug des ann es 1896-1899 se conjugue la d licatesse que l'on retrouve dans toute son ?uvre. Dans la p riode 1905-1910, son coup de pinceau devient plus fluide, utilisant toujours la m me palette r duite de couleurs pures. Dans les ann es 1920 et 1930, il passe l' t Collioure, haut lieu des coloristes du d but du si cle. Laug meurt en 1944, n'ayant jamais cess de travailler, cultivant sa palette singuli re et son coup de pinceau r solument vibrant et libre.‎

Maar bovenal was Dotremont de uitvinder van de logogrammen; gedichten bestaande uit zelfverzonnen tekens die op zulke spontane manier neergeschreven werden dat ze ook een grafisch kunstwerk werden. Dotremont a invent , entre autres, le nom CoBrA , qui tait compos des premi res lettres des trois capitales de Copenhague, Bruxelles et Amsterdam.
