Give weight of each where killed Time of Day Direction of Wind Condition of river and sign. Please state number of trought caught and weight of the fish and place where caught." The most prolific contributor to the log was Dr. Jedediah H. Baxter 1837-1890 Surgeon General of the U.S. Army personal physician to President James Garfield Baxter was not present at the assassination of the president in July 1881 gone fishing. He wrote some 99 entries and signed many others. James L. High American attorney wrote 29 entries and signed records of kills. One day such heavy quantities of logs came down that Baxter had to abandon fishing; on other days visible discharges of sawdust from upriver were a nuisance. On 15 July 1887 J.M. Oliver fishing along near the end of the Island pool was threatened with violence by the Superintendant of the Restigouche Club if he didn't get over to the other side of the water. "Notwithstanding Robinson's scaring" Oliver returned to the same pool the next day and caught a 23-lb. salmon and hooked a much larger one. Discussions with members of the club Robert Goelet owner of Toadbrook Lodge and Mr. Penfold followed "They said they were advised by counsel McAllister of Campbellton that our right extended not to the thread of the stream but the middle of the water surface" and declined to "adjust" matters; a long letter was sent to the Executive Committee of the Ristigouche Club at 120 Broadway in New York. Westchester
Two photograph albums containing 165 photos including a few duplicates some captioned mainly of scenic fishing or hunting subjects taken in northern Westchester NY County and other regions Vicinity of Bedford-Croton
n.p. 1910. the images mostly 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches and inset to the album two per page. 2 vols. 8vo each photo approximately 6 1/2 x 10 inches. One album in original green cloth slightly worn the other in 3/4 red calf a little rubbed spine gone. A few photographs faded one or two with slight blemishes but overall a fine collection. Each album is housed in a new grey cloth protective slipcase with chemise and crimson morocco spine label. the images mostly 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches and inset to the album two per page. 2 vols. 8vo each photo approximately 6 1/2 x 10 inches. Hunting and Fishing in Westchester 1900. Refuting the rule that the family photo album is invariably an icon of transcendent uninterest this collection of amateur photographs is a thoroughly beguiling one. The prints mostly in sepia record the happy idle moments of a prosperous family who lived or vacationed in the Bedford-Croton area of New York's Westchester County. Scenes include "On road to Bedford Station" hunting scenes on the "Croton River at Croton Falls" "Kisco River" and "Bronx River" etc. Subjects include some excellent shots of the wild surrounding countryside wildlife family members doing interesting things hunters or anglers displaying their trophies some posed "gag" shots and a host of other scenes. Agreeably the photos are not pasted down but slid into card mounts enabling them to be removed or rearranged. To turn the pages of these albums is to immerse onself in the scenes and pleasures of an easy less complicated day: a nostalgic and tranquilizing piece of delightful Americana. unknown

First edition. 1 vols. 4to. The most significant work on suicide of the eighteenth century. Together with dueling the author devotes a separate treatise to suicide's relationship to gambling. A "most frequent source of suicide" writes the author gambling is "often the last stage and completion of a vicious character." The second chapter of the treatise deals with the universality of gambling with histories of play in China Sumatra North America Africa and ancient civilizations. The substantial "Treatise on gaming" at the end of vol. II discusses the vices of gambling covering dice cards "the pursuits of the turf" lotteries and stock-jobbing all "notoriously productive of either direct or indirect self-murder." Among those in the lengthy "List of Subscribers" in volume one and an additional one in volume 2 are the Archbishop of Canterbury William Heberden who attended the melancholic Samuel Johnson and was called in to advise in the case of George III's indisposition William Hawes of the Humane Society and Samuel Whitbread reformist MP who ironically committed suicide himself in 1815.
