Fine original pen-and-ink drawing probably for a newspaper illustration commemorating the 1916 pennant win by the Brooklyn Robins. Titled in pencil at bottom - "Brooklyn the World Salutes You!
n.p. 1916. On stiff paper board signed lower right "R. Edgren.". 12-1/4 x 20-1/2 inches. In later glass-fronted frame; minor soiling a few pin holes and creases etc. generally sound. On stiff paper board signed lower right "R. Edgren.". 12-1/4 x 20-1/2 inches. The drawing depicts an allegorical figure of Manhattan in colonial garb tipping his hat and bowing in homage to his neighbor across the Brooklyn Bridge: a rotund figure in a Brooklyn baseball uniform bat in one hand pennant in the other standing in a field with "Brooklyn B.B. Club" on fence. The Dodgers were called the Robins from 1914-1931 in honor of their Manager Wilbert Robinson who is called Uncle Wilbert by the press. 1916: The Brooklyn Robins win their first NL Pennant in 16 years with a 94-60 record and earn a trip to their first ever World Series. After dropping Game 1 to the Boston Red Sox at home the Robins would score in the first inning of Game 2 and would not manage to not score again in the 14 inning pitching duel. The Robins just could not figure out how to hit a young 21-year old pitcher by the name of Babe Ruth who pitched the entire 14 innings to give the Red Sox a 2-0 series lead. The Robins would bounce back to take Game 3 in Boston but the Red Sox would take the next 2 and the series 4 games to 1. A charming cartoon by the well-known sports artist Robert Edgren. unknown

Excellent image of a brook trout rising to take a mayfly on the surface of a rocky stream. The relation of the trout to the fly is precisely the same as on the much reduced drawing reproduced on the title page and in gilt on the front cover of the 1937 retrospective collection of Schaldach's work Fish Eugene V. Connett proprietor of the Derrydale Press was a regular patron of the artist's work. The same year this print was produced Connett commissioned a drypoint etching of a Woodcock for the deluxe issue of Upland Game Bird Shooting in America. Interesting collection of drawings by the famed American illustrator Paul Brown chiefly connected to the Calvary Squadron A of New York City based at the armory on Madison Avenue and 94th/95th streets. "Sway-Backs Reunion" is a humorous sketch of an elderly horse and a boozing cavalryman demonstrating Brown's characteristic energy of line. The pencil sketches offer an interesting glimpse of Brown's working style and comprise: - "Remember": 21 drawings of fallen soldiers and horses Our Buddies The Lost Patrol Last Call - Taps; "We must not forget" with Squadron A pennants ; a kneeling GI beside a fallen comrade. One drawing inscribed "To 'Phil' Brady Sincerely Paul Brown" 5 signed Paul Brown 3 signed"PB" and 12 unsigned preliminary drawings. The sketch of Squadron A pennants demonstrates a visual continuity between the crossed sabers of the cavalry troop and its 1941 redesignation as the 101st Cavalry.
