A book of almost legendary importance recounting the author's adventures at Camp Harmony on the Restigouche River in New Brunswick and drawing upon his long experience fishing the river. Dean Sage's contributions to angling literature are few in number but profoundly influential: "Ten Days' Sport on Salmon Rivers" published in the Atlantic in 1875 is a classic account. His library catalogue 2 vols.1896 1904 remains an important document in the history of angling bibliography and collecting. Sage's section on "The Atlantic Salmon" in Salmon and Trout 1902 is a synthesis of his own first hand knowledge as a fisherman and his assessment of the extensive literature. The Ristigouche and Its Salmon Fishing remains the work for which Sage is best known. A facsimile of the first edition with additional material including the signed color plates an introduction by Arnold Gingrich and "A Notice of Dean Sage" by Dewitt Sage. n.p. 1940. 1 vols. 6-1/4 inches in diameter. These plates have been used to dine from and there are occasional minute scratches but they are fine overall and ideal for display. Lynn Bogue Hunt. 1 vols. 6-1/4 inches in diameter. Wildfowl China Plates by Lynn Bogue Hunt. On November 3 1943 Lynn Bogue Hunt wrote to Eugene V. Connett founder proprietor and in 1942 liquidator of The Derrydale Press: ".I have been decorating highball glasses plates and doing porcelains for a couple of years and with considerable success on a royalty basis". Looking at these exceptionally attractive and interesting plates it is easy to see why. Hunt's ducks pheasant quail and other species are vigorously depicted in flight with Hunt's caption and signature included on the front surface. On the back of each plate is shown a pair of the subject birds and a lengthy description about 125 words of their characteristics and habits lettered and signed by Hunt. Despite numerous attempts by various practitioners sporting art does not always translate well to other media but with these plates Hunt has successfully combined form and function with elegance and style. The annotation on a loosely inserted sketch of a rustic "with the sun in one hand and a watering-pot in the other" identifies the artist as William Spencer "as a boy" and is signed "A. D. Coleridge." Arthur Duke Coleridge 1830-1913 was clerk of assizes on the Midland circuit and author of Eton in the Forties by an old Colleger 1896; and Reminiscences 1921 edited by J.A. Fuller-Maitland. William Spencer 1846-1928 "Pa" was a music teacher and organist who lived at Fernlea in Cookham and was father of eight children and "was described by an acquaintance as 'a patriarchal figure who cycled around Cookham reciting Ruskin aloud'"ODNB. His eldest son William the artist of this album was a child prodigy pianist who went on to become a professor at the Bern Music Institute. William "most certainly was a draughtsman. Indeed he had to decide between a career in art or one in music and decided on music . My feeling is that both Pa and Will may have been associated with the London Bach Choir which A.D. Coleridge helped set up in 1875" Ken Pople personal communication 2006. William's two younger brothers were British artists Sir Stanley Spencer 1891-1959 and Gilbert Spencer 1893-1979; all received an unconventional late Victorian education at home. Stanley spent much of his life in the village of Cookham where the Stanley Spencer Gallery is now maintained in his memory. Unusual and interesting. unknown

A good copy of this popular eighteenth-century fishing manual was first published in 1726and complete with its charming engraved frontispiece and the rare final leaf of ads. In fact according to Westwood & Satchell this edition of 1786 appeared as a "novel publication" and as such may be regarded as the first edition of an entirely new work. A beautifully executed set of drawings probably done for a magazine or horse show program featuring a wide variety of equestrian and equine activities involving horses people and objects. Among the many activities depicted are: show jumping carriage driving four in hand and two and one horse carriages dressage hunting and showing. It is unfortunate that the name of the artist is not indicated as these lively and detailed drawings are superbly rendered by a talented hand. unknown
