The origin of the term "hot rod" is unclear. For example some claim that the term "hot" refers to the vehicle being stolen. Other origins include replacing the engine's camshaft or "rod" with a higher performance version.</p><p>The term has broadened to apply to other items that are modified for a particular purpose such as "hot-rodded amplifier".</p><p>Some automotive historians say that the term originated with stolen vehicles being refitted with another engine and repainted. In the early days of automobile manufacturing there was no identical matching transmission body frame and engine numbers. It was possible to change engines and repaint the car or truck and in effect turn it into a different vehicle and thus it became near impossible to prove that the vehicle was stolen. The term "hot" was equivalent to being stolen. The term "rod" was equivalent to any motorized vehicle. Even today the Ontario Ministry of the Environment in its vehicle emissions regulations refers to a "hotrod" as any motorized vehicle that has a replacement engine differing from the factory original. Another possible origin includes replacement of the camshaft with a new "hotter" version sometimes known as a hot stick or hot rod. Roadsters were the cars of choice because they were light easy to modify and inexpensive. The term became commonplace in the 1930s or 1940s as the name of a car that had been "hopped up" by modifying the engine for higher performance. A term common in the early days was "gow job". This has fallen into disuse except with historians.</p><p>The gow job morphed into the hot rod in the early to middle 1950s.</p><p>The term seems first to have appeared in the late 1930s in southern California where people raced modified cars on dry lake beds northeast of Los Angeles under the rules of the Southern California Timing Association SCTA among other groups. The activity increased in popularity after World War II particularly in California because many returning soldiers received technical training in the service. Many cars were prepared by bootleggers in response to Prohibition to enable them to avoid revenue agents "Revenooers"; some police vehicles were also modified in response.</p><p>The first hot rods were old cars most often Fords typically Model Ts 1928–31 Model As or 1932-34 Model Bs modified to reduce weight. Typical modifications were removal of convertible tops hoods bumpers windshields and/or fenders; channeling the body; and modifying the engine by tuning and/or replacing with a more powerful type. Speedster was a common name for the modified car. Wheels and tires were changed for improved traction and handling. "Hot rod" was sometimes a term used in the 1950s as a derogatory term for any car that did not fit into the mainstream. Hot rodders' modifications were considered to improve the appearance as well leading to show cars in the 1960s replicating these same modifications along with a distinctive paint job.</p><p>Typical of builds from before World War Two were '35 Ford wire-spoke wheels.</p><p>Immediately postwar most rods would change from mechanical to hydraulic "juice" brakes and from bulb to sealed-beam headlights.</p><p>Engine swaps often involved fitting the Ford flathead V8 engine or "flatty" in a different chassis; the "60 horse" in a Jeep was a popular choice in the '40s. After the appearance of the 255 cu in 4.2 l V8 because of interchangeability installing the longer-stroke Mercury crank in the 239 was a popular upgrade among hot rodders much as the 400 cu in 6.6 l crank in small-blocks would later become. In the 1950s the flathead block was often fitted with crankshafts of up to 4.125 in 104.8 mm stroke sometimes more. In addition rodders in the 1950s routinely bored them out by 0.1875 in 4.76 mm to 3.375 in 85.7 mm; due to the tendency of blocks to crack as a result of overheating a perennial problem this is no longer recommended. In the '50s and '60s the flatty was supplanted by the early hemi. By the 1970s the small-block Chevy was the most common option and since the '80s the 350 cu in 5.7 l Chevy has been almost ubiquitous.</p> Motor Books International Publishing Company LLC paperback

Along with Cub Scouting Boy Scouting Varsity Scouting and Venturing Sea Scouting provides a program for religious fraternal educational and other community organizations to use for character citizenship and mental and personal fitness training for youth. As part of this training Sea Scouts are expected to develop personal religious values learn the principles of American heritage and government and acquire skills that will prepare them to become successful adults.</p><p>Sea Scouting is the BSA's implementation of the Sea Scout program initially developed in 1910 by Warington Baden-Powell in England. The founders of Sea Scouting in the United States are Arthur A. Carey of Waltham Massachusetts and Charles T. Longstreth of Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Both leaders independently established Sea Scout groups in the summer of 1912. This accomplishment was recorded in the inaugural issue of Scouting.</p><p>The advancement scheme for Sea Scouts places an initial emphasis on nautical skills before encouraging the youth to take a major role in planning activities in the unit. Young men and women ages fourteen through twenty-one who are willing to abide by the requirements of BSA membership including agreeing to live by the ideals expressed in the Sea Promise Scout Oath and Scout Law are eligible to join a Sea Scouting ship. Ships are administered by volunteers with the assistance and support of some paid professional staff.</p><p>As of 2016 Sea Scouting is currently its own independent program within the BSA. From 1998 to 2016 it had been part of Venturing and prior to that part of Exploring.</p><p>The Sea Scout rank system consists of Apprentice Ordinary Able and Quartermaster. The first rank of Apprentice shows basic marlinspike seamanship skills safety and basic ideals. To earn Ordinary the Sea Scout must know the Ideals of Sea Scouting be an active member for six months learn specials skills relating to boats marlinspike seamanship piloting communicating swimming safety and cooking. In addition three of seven electives need to be completed such as close order drill signaling in semaphore boxing a compass yacht racing sailing ornamental ropework and engine maintenance. For the Able rank the Sea Scout must be able to explain and demonstrate a complete knowledge seamanship skills earn the Lifesaving merit badge complete a long cruise and must and be an officer in his or her ship.</p><p>Quartermaster is the highest rank attainable by a Sea Scout and is equivalent to Eagle Scout Boy Scouts of America. The Sea Scout must attend at least three quarters of all Ship meetings and special activities over eighteen months demonstrate marlinspike seamanship and leadership skills demonstrate the ability to teach Sea Scouting skills complete a Quartermaster Leadership Service Project community service project and pass a council level board of review. The Quartermaster emblem is a medal consisting of the Sea Scout emblem on a ship's wheel that is suspended from a solid dark blue ribbon that is in turn suspended from a bar bearing the design of a double carrick bend knot. In 2011 40 Sea Scouts attained the rank of Quartermaster compared with over 51000 Eagle Scouts.</p><p>Sea Scouts who earn this rank are entitled to wear a uniform similar to that of a United States Navy Chief Petty Officer CPO and can earn advanced rates upon enlistment into the U.S. Navy or United States Coast Guard.</p><p>Although not an actual rank pre-Apprentice members are sometimes referred to as "cabin-boys" or "cabin-girls".</p><p>Sea Scouts currently may earn two seamanship knowledge and skill qualification recognitions: the "Qualified Seaman" and "Small Boat Handler" badges.</p><p>Sea Scouts may also obtain the boating licenses and safe boating training certifications offered at the state and local levels and are encouraged to qualify in first aid CPR lifesaving SCUBA and US Sailing certifications. Ships are encouraged to affiliate with the United States Power Squadrons enabling Sea Scouts and Scouters to obtain the USPS training.</p><p>The Long Cruise Badge may be earned by Ordinary rank and above Sea Scouts and adults who complete a two-week cruise or a series of weekend or overnight cruises adding up to 14 days. Segments indicate subsequent awards— white for one additional award and red for five additional awards.</p><p>From June 1998 to February 2016 Sea Scouting was part of the Venturing program and Sea Scouts could earn Venturing awards. Sea Scouts are currently eligible to earn Venturing Awards through a grandfather agreement. Sea Scouts who have earned the First Class rank in Boy Scouting can work on requirements and merit badges for the rank of Eagle Scout until age 18.</p><p>There are several training opportunities available to Sea Scout youth including Quarterdeck Training Introduction to Leadership Skills for Ships ILSS and Sea Scout Advanced Leadership Training SEAL. The SEAL program is a week-long course designed teach leadership skills while underway. SEAL graduates earn the double-dolphin SEAL pin. Adults who completed SEAL training as a youth or has qualified to be a SEAL course director or assistant course director may also wear the pin. Founded by Ole Evinrude in Milwaukee Wisconsin in 1907 it was formerly owned by the publicly traded Outboard Marine Corporation OMC since 1935 but OMC filed for bankruptcy in 2000. It is now a subsidiary of North American Bombardier Recreational Products.</p><p>Evinrude outboards produce two-stroke direct-injected engines ranging from 25 hp 19 kW to a 3.4L V6 300 hp. They used carburetors until the late 1990s when EPA Clean air regulations mandated new technologies. OMC partnered with FICHT of Germany to introduce Direct Injection. Unsurpassed durability testing took place and production started prior to another round of EPA Regulations. Modifications were made at that point to bring the motors up to standards. these modifications were not carefully engineered and designed and caused powerhead failure and even a recall on the motors. The losses on these motors the loss of reputation and the surge of competition from Japan and Mercury pushed the company into Bankruptcy in 2000.</p><p>In 2001 Bombardier acquired the Evinrude and Johnson Outboards brands; the FICHT technology was reengineered into E-TEC direct injection. This improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions oil usage noise levels and maintenance needs. This is due in part by a pin point oiling system which only applies oil to the necessary components unlike the original two stroke motors. Evinrude E-TEC was the first outboard engine technology to win the American Environmental Protection Agency 2004 Clean Air Excellence Award which recognizes low emission levels.</p><p>Today all Evinrude motors are built and assembled in Sturtevant Wisconsin south of Milwaukee.</p><p>Ole Evinrude was born in Gjøvik Norway on April 19 1877; five years later his family emigrated to the United States settling near Cambridge Wisconsin. Interested in mechanics from an early age Evinrude became an apprentice machinist at age 16 and eventually a master pattern maker as well.</p><p>Along with a growing number of people at the turn of the century Ole Evinrude was fascinated by the potential of the newly developed internal combustion engine and he set up a firm to build small engines.</p><p>While Evinrude concentrated on the mechanical and engineering aspects of the new firm he entrusted the bookkeeping and business end of the firm to his assistant Bessie Cary. The story surrounding Evinrude's invention of the outboard boat engine revolves around a picnic that Cary and Evinrude enjoyed on Okauchee Lake in the lake country west of Milwaukee two and one-half miles from shore. Cary expressed a desire for a dish of ice cream and Evinrude rowed back to shore for it. Of course the ice cream was melted by the time he returned but Evinrude inspired by the incident was determined to design an engine that would replace the oar as a means of boat propulsion.</p><p>Cary and Evinrude were married in 1906. In 1907 Evinrude founded Evinrude Motors in Milwaukee. The firm immediately began to develop its first outboard motor a one-cylinder 1.5 hp 1.1 kW model which became an instant success upon its introduction in 1909.</p><p>Because of Bessie's poor health the Evinrudes sold their company in 1913 and Ole agreed to not re-enter the outboard motor business for five years. His inventive mind kept busy however and during his "retirement" he devised a much-improved two-cylinder outboard engine. In 1921 he and Bessie formed the ELTO Outboard Motor Company ELTO standing for Evinrude's Light Twin Outboard. This new outboard engine was also very successful and in 1929 the ELTO company merged with the original Evinrude company since renamed the Outboard Marine Corporation and the Lockwood Motor Company with Evinrude the president of this new company.</p><p>Bessie who had retired in 1928 for health reasons died in 1933 in Milwaukee. Ole Evinrude died the following year on July 12 in Milwaukee and the company was taken over by their son Ralph. In 1936 the Evinrude company merged with the Johnson Motor Company to form the Outboard Marine Corporation. During World War II the company manufactured motors for various types of military marine craft.</p><p>In the 1930s and 1940s 4-60 engines were used in midgets racers. These 59.4 cu in 973 cc water-cooled horizontally opposed engines ran on special racing fuel: 82% methanol 10% toluene or benzol and 8% castor oil which was available in 5 US gal 19 l; 4.2 imp gal cans from drug stores plus tetraethyllead also available in drug stores to avoid engine knock. They would rev close to 8000 rpm and could produce 80 hp 60 kW close to 1 horsepower per pound 1.7 kW/kg of engine weight.</p><p>OMC declared chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2000 and its assets were subsequently acquired by Bombardier Recreational Products which continues to build Evinrude branded outboard motors. The modern Evinrude E-TEC motors are among the lowest emission and highest power-to-weight ratio outboards currently produced.</p><p>Evinrude's name continues today not only on many an outboard motor but also by the presentation of the Ole Evinrude Award. Given annually by the New York Boat Show this award is presented in recognition of an individual's contributions to the growth of recreational boating.</p> paperback
