Sharp corners. Pages are fresh and crisp. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Oversize Hardcover. 9.5" wide by 11.5" tall. Marvelously illustrated with hundreds of images -- previously unpublished photographs reproductions of first edition dust jackets posters movie stills ephemera etc. -- many in full-color. Bibliography. Index. Bound in the original yellow-gold boards lettered in bright red on the spine and front cover. From the Dust Jacket: "There is perhaps no writer in living memory who lends himself so well to an illustrated biography as Ernest Hemingway. Not only did he absorb the ideas of the most advanced writers of his time and use them to reinvent the American novel in the terse romantically stoic mode that is now classic; he also lived extensively traveled and worked in some of the world's most evocative places -- Montparnasse Spain Key West the Far West East Africa China Cuba and Venice. His circle of friends was correspondingly broad: 'Papa' Hemingway could claim as his intimates Ezra Pound James Joyce Gertrude Stein and Scott Fitzgerald Alfred Vanderbilt and Bror von Blixen Marlene Dietrich and Gary Cooper. Papa Hemingway pursued and wrote about both battle and love in three of the great conflicts of this century -- the First and Second World Wars and the Spanish Civil War in between -- all the while engaging in countless dangerous and colorful exploits from hunting rhinos and fishing for marlin to boxing and bullfighting. An extraordinary man in an extraordinary time Hemingway combined hedonism and hard work a love of nature and an eye for fine painting irrepressible gaiety and a profound sense of human tragedy. This biography is filled with personal reminiscences of Hemingway's good friend A.E. Hotchner as well as critical analyses of his major works. Hundreds of photographs many previously unpublished have been gathered from the Hemingway archives at the John F. Kennedy Library from sources in Oak Park Madrid and Paris from the collections of F. Scott Fitzgerald Max Perkins and Sylvia Beach. No other book on Hemingway portrays so thoroughly the man himself and the fascinating personalities that inspired his work.". First U.S. Edition. Duval John Crittenden 1816 1897
The Adventures of Big-Foot Wallace the Texas Ranger and Hunter bound in GENUINE LEATHER
Alexandria Virginia:: Time Life Books 1983. A beautiful copy. Bright clean square and tight. No corner bumps. No owner's name. No remainder mark. Fresh and crisp apparently never read. The binding on this copy is GENUINE LEATHER superior to the cheaper leatherette imitation leather found on some later printings. Although at first glance leatherette can look a lot like leather it does not age as gracefully in the long run. Laid-in is the publisher's introductory letter which says in part: "This leather-bound volume." There is also a statement printed in the book on a preliminary page: "This volume is bound in leather." These references to leather were later removed for the leatherette copies. The binding is gilt stamped and embossed with a handsome western motif including rising sun longhorn steer tomahawk and six shooter/bullets. A silk ribbon page-marker is sewn into the headband. All edges gilt. Attractive marbled endpapers. Illustrated with portrait and engravings. A volume in the Classics of the Old West series. Biography of William Alexander Anderson Big-Foot Wallace who was born in Virginia in 1816. According to John H. Jenkins Basic Texas Books 50: "This is a well-written account of a fascinating Texas Ranger and hero. The work divides naturally into three parts: Wallace as hunter and Indian fighter; Wallace on the Mier Expedition; and Wallace's trip home to Virginia. The first part 28 chapters contains Wallace's first-person narrative of all his adventures in the wilds of unsettled Texas with dozens of hunting tales and even more Indian fights. The second part 11 chapters is the nearly exact history of Wallace's service in the Mier Expedition his capture the drawing of the black beans and his term in Perote Prison. The last part 7 chapters is a hilarious first-hand account of his trip via New Orleans to Virginia." J. Frank Dobie called the book "the rollickiest and most flavorsome that any American frontiersman has yet inspired." See also: Howes D602; Final Edition D611; Clark NEW SOUTH I-65; Dobie p.55; Graff 1187; Rader 1247; Raines p.73. Laid-in is the publisher's introductory letter which says in part: "If anything Wallace was a greater attraction as a storyteller in Texas than he had been in Virginia. One saloonkeeper kept him supplied with free drinks as long as he cared to sit in the establishment and talk because of the crowds who came to hear him. In THE ADVENTURES OF BIG-FOOT WALLACE published in 1871 Duval echoes his subject's easy narrative style partly because Duval himself was so close to Wallace in career and character." . Facsimile reprint of 1871 edition. Hard Cover. Fine condition./No Dust Jacket as issued. 8vo. 291pp. Time Life Books Hardcover

Bound in the original pale green cloth lettered in shiny metallic dark green on the spine. From the Dust Jacket: "GREEN COGNAC THE EDUCATION OF A MOUNTAIN FIGHTER is a superb account of the mountain and ski troops as seen from Putnam's often wry perspective. The elite Mountain Troops were sent to break the German Gothic Line in the Apennine Mountains of Italy. Brilliantly led they fought their way northward with magnificent dash seizing control of ten mountain crests. Their determined drive broke German resistance and brought on the first large-scale enemy surrender of World War II. Much celebrated and studied after the war for their striking success and spirit in the field the Mountain Troops presented an awe-inspiring picture of camaraderie and courage. Patterson and Colonel Jim Corbett who stalked legendary man-eaters through the silent darkness on opposite sides of the world; men like Karamojo Bell acknowledged as the greatest elephant hunter of all time; men like the valiant Sasha Siemel who tracked killer jaguars though the Matto Grosso armed only with a spear. With an authenticity gained by having shared the experiences he writes of Peter Capstick eloquently recreates the acrid taste of terror in the mouth of a man whose gun has jammed as a lion begins his charge the exhilaration of tracking and finding a long-sought prey the bravery and even nobility of performing under circumstances of primitive and savage stress with death all around in the silent places of the wilderness." From the Dust Jacket: "Since the publication of his haunting elegiac GOODBYE TO A RIVER in 1960 John Graves has become one of Texas' most beloved writers whose circle of loyal readers extends far beyond the boarders of his home state. A 'regional' writer only by virtue of his gift for vividly evoking the spirit of the land and its people Mr. Graves is also admired for the unerring craftsmanship of his prose. Now the University of Texas Press takes great pleasure in publishing A JOHN GRAVES READER to introduce his writing to a new generation of readers. This anthology contains selections from GOODBYE TO A RIVER and his two other major books HARD SCRABBLE 1974 and FROM A LIMESTONE LEDGE 1980. It also includes short stories and essays some of which have never been published before and others that Mr. Graves has reworked especially for this book. All of the pieces in this anthology were chosen by Mr. Graves himself to be in his words 'representative of my writing for better or worse.' They reflect various stages of his life and writing career -- youth in Texas World War II sojourns in New York Mexico and Europe during the 1940s and 1950s and his final return to Texas as home and as subject matter -- as well as recurring themes in his writing from the land and the people to fishing traveling and the enduring friendships that have enriched his life. For those who have never read John Graves this anthology will be the perfect introduction to the range and excellence of his work. At the same time those who have read him faithfully for many years will find new pieces to enjoy as well as old favorites to savor once again. Their determined drive broke German resistance and brought on the first large-scale enemy surrender of World War II. Pages are clean and crisp. No underlining. No highlighting. No margin notes. Illustrated with 16 pages of photos. Index. Bound in the original black boards lettered in gold on the spine. From the Dust Jacket: "Milt Pappas played Major League Baseball for 17 seasons. He threw a no-hitter for the Chicago Cubs. He posted 43 life-time shutouts He won 209 games. He played in three Major League All-Star games. Off the field but still as a part of baseball history Milt led the crusade to improve the lives of all Major League Baseball players. He was a driving force within the Major League Baseball Players' Association. By his efforts and others today's players are better paid have more freedom of movement and have a better future after their playing days than those who played the game before him. Despite a stellar career as a pitcher in the Major Leagues he's never been considered for the Baseball Hall of Fame. He had managers that stunted his playing career for one reason or another. Away from the game he had one business fail because of an accidental fire and when a second one failed his partner committed suicide. But the biggest disaster of his life was the loss of his first wife. One bright summer day Carole Pappas seemingly vanished from the face of the earth. For five years she was lost; then she was finally found -- by accident. What happened to her still remains a mystery to this day. Carole's disappearance tormented Milt and his children for those five years and it still troubles him. In this his story Milt reveals how he dealt with the triumphs on the field and the terrible tragedies off the field. He relates his thoughts his feelings and his memories with humor with anger and with humility -- although not all at the same time. Why did he write this book He looked into the mirror one day saw the truth and decided the time had come to tell it all. Like an umpire he calls it the way he sees it.".
