In addition to anthropological and geographical accounts of the region chapters deal with big game hunting notably the huge big-horn sheep ovis ammon of which it is noted "no other beast for its size carries such a weight of horn". In this it was highly successful and for decades sponsored outings and trips that were not only social occasions but served to popularise the sport until the advent of the automobile made coaching on public roads an infrequent ceremonial. One of the mainstays of the Club in the early 1900s was Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt until his untimely death in the sinking of the "Lusitania" in 1915. No expense was spared to make this book written by the President of the Club a worthy monument to the sport and the men who made it; as a Derrydale production it is notes Frazier "fine and rare.this book doesn't show up often particularly true of the deluxe edition and it is a beauty.". An excellent and fully captioned photograph album of summer trout fishing and camping in the Rangeley district at Loon Lake Maine and other places of interest. The photographer is unnamed but evidently from Boston or the north shore with some connections further south on Long Island.<br/><br/>The album records two trips to Maine: the first to Loon Lake in 1915 and the J. Lewis York family fishing camp including several fine images of York often with a bear cub on a lead 66 photographs on 17 leaves ; and the second undated to Green Lake Mike Marr's camp at Indian Pond to Squaw Mountain Pond with Fred Lessor guide and to Moosehead Lake and the Kennebec 36 photographs on 9 leaves. <br/><br/>Three trips to Nova Scotia in 1914 1919 and 1923 to the Kedgemakoogee Rod and Gun Club on Kedgemakoogee Lake the Shelburne River and other trout fishing excursions 139 photographs on 37 leaves. In the June 1923 trip Irving Lake Dam on the Shelburne is described as the best fishing water of the trip. A few participants are identified: E.L. Matlack O.H. Muir and Wilson Forrest and the unidentified grinning angler with a large string of trout may well be the compiler. <br/><br/>As well as scenes from the Piping Rock Horse Show Long Island noting Miss Lansdale up in several snapshots 22 photographs on 5 leaves; and a trip to Atlantic City at the end with the Shriners parade and seaside scenes 27 photographs on 7 leaves. W. Seton-Karr" beneath the title.<br/><br/>Major Harald G.C. Swayne 1860-1940 soldier and sportsman was author of Seventeen Trips through Somaliland 1895; he also served in Burma and Aden and later in Flanders during the first world war.<br/><br/>Seton-Karr 1859-1938 was born in India educated at Eton Oriel and Sandhurst serving for a time as an officer at Gibraltar and in Egypt. He travelled extensively for sport in Africa Egypt and Somaliland Norway Alaska and in India and Central Asia. His books incuded two volumes on Alaska and British Columbia and Ten Years' Wild Sports in Foreign Lands 1889. One of the items of ephemera added later is a publicity piece on Seton-Karr noting 19 journeys to Africa 25 expeditions to Asia and 20 trips to Arctic Europe and America.<br/><br/>Swayne and Seton-Karr "traveled from Moscow across the Urals and into the mountainous regions of Mongolia and the Altai Shan. Near the Chagan-Burgaza Pass Ovis ammon were bagged. In the Laki Valley ibex and more Ovis ammon were collected. There are excellent descriptions of terrrain throughout. The author used Elim Demidoff's After Wild Sheep in the Altai and Mongolia as a guide" - Czech.<br/><br/>A rich and fascinating extra-illustrated record of Siberian travel by one of the participants. He was also a member of Congress 1812-1820 and in 1829 was elected Mayor of Philadelphia. His well written accounts of both organizations are full of lively anecdotes specific incidents and reports of various methods of hunting and fishing not to mention a number of illustrious and interesting individuals<br/>Attractive copy of this key work in American sporting history.
