Gehrig Lou
Autograph Letter in Japanese calligraphic script to Lou Gehrig from "the Children of Japan
Japan 1934. Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Fine. Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Presented to Lou Gehrig from the Children of Japan. Gehrig barnstormed around Japan in 1934 joined by Babe Ruth his manager Connie Mack and a dozen other players. Gehrig brought his wife Eleanor intending the trip to be the first leg of their delayed honeymoon. Gehrig and Ruth were no longer on speaking terms and an encounter between Eleanor and Ruth involving prodigious amounts of champagne and caviar in the slugger's cabin further cemented the estrangement.
The present letter written in Japanese and presented to Gehrig from "the children of Japan" is a touching note offering good wishes to Gehrig's mother with whom he was very close.
Translation of the presentation letter:
Dear Mr. Gehrig:
"I am very happy to learn that you are a good filial son to your Mom. I hear that fact from someone and read about it in a magazine. I like and respect my own Mother very much. So I would like to give something from Japan to your Mom. I was thinking and thinking but I could not know what was a good and appropriate gift. After much consideration and thought I decided it might be good to send your Mom the Nippon Shichi Fukujin or Japan's Seven Lucky Gods. It is close to Christmas - your country. So these Seven Lucky Gods will bring many happinesses to your Mom. This is really a 'tsumaranai mono' not-so-fine a thing a trifling thing of no major importance whatsoever. I wish some Japanese person in the US to explain to you about the Seven Lucky Gods. I hope you and your Mom will have a good fortune. I ask the Seven Lucky Gods to bring this gift to you. I am afraid the gift for your Mom is not so fine. Japanese children said to you Mr. Gehrig 'yoroshiku' to say 'hello' to you and your Mom. For a long time you have been active and working hard. Please come to Japan again. With your Mom! To have sightseeing. The children of Japan. November."
With: 3 books on Japanese culture and tourism from Gehrig's library.
From the collection of Ruth Martin Quick a former girlfriend of Gehrig who later became a very close friend of Gehrig's mother Christina. The collection included Gehrig's jersey worn on the 1934 Japan trip which sold for over $500000 at auction in 2011 a signed baseball and other memorabilia. Provenance: Jeffrey Quick of Whippany N.J. son of Ruth Martin Quick a friend of Lou Gehrig unknown books

West Leonard
Collection of Four Autograph Letters Signed "Leonard West" to R.B. Marston editor of the Fishing Gazette August to December 1912 concerning printing and publishing The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation and preparation of the deluxe copies
Ravenhead St. Helens England: Published by the Author 1912. Pen and ink on paper. 15 pp. total. 1 vols. 12mo. Green buckram portfolio. Letters generally fine. Book: original olive cloth a trifle worn spine faded else fine. Pen and ink on paper. 15 pp. total. 1 vols. 12mo. West to Marston on producing and selling The Natural Trout Fly. Fascinating clutch of letters from Leonard West discussing the production and early sales of The Natural Trout Fly and Its Imitation now recognized as one of the classic works of pre-war English angling literature with information on the deluxe edition containing hand-tied flies. The recipient R.B. Marston author of Walton and the Earlier Angler Authors and the 1901 Supplement to the Bibliotheca Piscatoria was the influential editor of the Fishing Gazette for many years.

- The first letter 3 pp. is dated 14 August 1912 and begins "Herewith I have the pleasure in enclosing review copy of my book 'The Natural Trout Fly & Its Imitation' & hope you will find the volume worthy of a favorable review . I think the printers deserve a good word for the way they have turned out the plates ." Docketed with a note in Marston's hand "See my note in FG Aug. 24 1912 RBM."

- The second letter dated 23 August thanks Marston for a "very handsome" Note in the Fishing Gazette see clipping inserted in the book and discusses other early notices: "The 'Scotsman' gives me a good word shot but quite O.K. The Sporting & Dramatic 'have given instructions for it to be well reviewed & request permission to reproduce one of the plates' That for an outsider seems going it pretty strong - does it not . I have unloaded 100 up to now & sent for more." West also details progress on the edition de luxe "My leisure at present is occupied in dressing flies & trying to get others up to concert pitch . I have booked 19 E. de luxe"

- The third letter 2 pp. dated 21 October notes that West is sending Marston "the edition de luxe of my book & hope you will like the get up & also the flies therein. The demand has been much greater than the supply so there will be little difficulty in disposing of a copy if desired at a premium. Other copies should all be sent out in the next fortnight . The ordinary edition is quietly going out all the time & hosts of appreciative letters are received not only from English customers but from France & America also." Docketed see F.G. note Oct. 26/12.

- the fourth letter 4 pp. dated 12 December 1912 discusses sales of the book: "Sales are moving all the time lowest number sent off in any week being 10 & the average being 31.76 per week. I do no know if a "proper" publisher would consider this satisfactory but possibly he might not talk to his customers in the blunt way I do to some of mine!" West also discusses two flies Orange Partridge and Snipe & Purple: "but what is a snipe & purple It is over thirty years since old Joe Moses a well known North country catcher of fish shewed me how to make it . but not dressed as now sold but thusly details & sketch follow keep it thin both in body thorax & legs." West adds a note at the top "P.S. What about the Hon. D. Fearing - his copy - of the Ed. de luxe"

With a copy of the printed book Marston's Occasional Note "Send Your Money!" from the Fishing Gazette for 24 August 1912 clipped and tipped in to front pastedown.

Choice group of letters with substantial content and an important association. Published by the Author unknown books

Peter Artedi or Petrus Arctaedius February 22 1705 - September 27 1735 was a Swedish naturalist and is known as the "father of Ichthyology."

Artedi was born in the province of Ã…ngermanland. Intending to become a clergyman he went in 1724 to study theology at Uppsala University but he turned his attention to medicine and natural history especially fishes. In 1728 his countryman Carolus Linnaeus arrived in Uppsala and a lasting friendship was formed between the two. In 1732 both left Uppsala Artedi for England and Linnaeus for Lappland; before parting they reciprocally bequeathed to each other their manuscripts and books in the event of death.

Artedi accidentally drowned at Amsterdam where he was engaged in cataloguing the collections of Albertus Seba a wealthy Dutchman who had formed what was perhaps the richest museum of his time. According to agreement his manuscripts came into the hands of Linnaeus and his Bibliotheca Ichthyologica and Philosophia Ichthyologica together with a life of the author were published at Leiden in 1738.

On his grave an epitaph by George Shaw is engraved:

Here lies poor Artedi in foreign land pyx'd

Not a man nor a fish but something betwixt

Not a man for his life among fishes he past

Not a fish for he perished by water at last. Victoria Hotel Southport July 2d/'82. 2 pages pen and ink. 1 vols. 8vo. Old folds light browning at margins. 2 pages pen and ink. 1 vols. 8vo. Barnum on His Reciepts from the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Barnum writes to his lecture manager Major James Pond declining an invitation to lecture in England and revealing his gross receipts from his Barnum & Bailey's show. Reading in part "Thanks for your offer for me to lecture . the receipts of our big show were in first 6 days $74051.00 - the whole ten days over $108000 and on one day Saturday June 17 $15742.15. This seems incredible - but is the honest truth. We think that "Jumbo" an African elephant recently purchased from the London zoo adds £800 - or $4000 daily to our receipts - certainly for 8 months or 36 weeks he will add to our receipts $15000 per week or $540000! - £109000 sterling. Is it any wonder that we decline an offer of £100 per day & all expenses for the 75 or 80 winter days that we can't exhibit in America" Barnum closes with a postscript "Ask Hoffman if he can tell me how to get the Mexican dwarf girl on resonable terms for Ringling show next summer .".
Major James Burton Pond 1838-1903 was a lecture promoter who in addition to Barnum represented Samuel Clemens Winston Churchill and Henry Stanley. unknown books
