INGRASSIA BRIAN M
The Rise Of Gridiron University: Higher Education's Uneasy Alliance With Big-time Football
University Press of Kansas Lawrence: 2012. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The quarterback sends his wide receiver deep. The crowd gasps as he launches the ball. And when he hits his man the team's fans roar with approvalespecially those with the deep pockets. Make no mistake; college football is big business played with one eye on the score the other on the bottom line. But was this always the case Brian M. Ingrassia here offers the most incisive account to date of the origins of college football tracing the sport's evolution from a gentlemen's pastime to a multi-million dollar enterprise that made athletics a permanent fixture on our nation's campuses and cemented college football's place in American culture. He takes readers back to the late 1800s to tell how schools embraced the sport as a way to get the public interested in higher learningand then how football's immediate popularity overwhelmed campuses and helped create the beast we know today. Contrary to conventional wisdom Ingrassia proves that the academy did not initially resist the inclusion of athletics; rather progressive reformers and professors embraced football as a way to make the ivory tower less elitist. With its emphasis on disciplined teamwork and spectatorship football was seen as a "middlebrow" way to make the university more accessible to the general public. What it really did was make athletics a permanent fixture on campus with its own set of professional experts bureaucracies and ostentatious cathedrals. Ingrassia examines the early football programs at universities like Michigan Stanford Ohio State and others then puts those histories in the context of Progressive Era culture including insights from coaches like Georgia Tech's John Heisman and Notre Dame's Knute Rockne. He describes how reforms emerged out of incidents such as a section of grandstands collapsing at the University of Chicago. He also touches on some of the problems facing current day college football. The Rise of Gridiron University shows us where and how it all began highlighting college football's essential role in shaping the modern universityand by extension American intellectual culture. It should have wide appeal among students of American studies and sports history as well as fans of college football curious to learn how their game became a cultural force in a matter of a few decades. WRIGHT BART
Football Revolution: The Rise Of The Spread Offense And How It Transformed College Football
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2013. Softcover. Brand new book. For the last twenty-five years the most dominant offensive strategy in college football has been the spread offense which relies on empty backfields lots of receivers and passing and no huddles between plays. Where the spread offense started why it took so long to take hold and the evolution of its many variations are the much-debated mysteries that Bart Wright sets about solving in this book. Football Revolution recovers a key overlooked part of the story. The book reveals how Jack Neumeier a high school football coach in California in the 1970s built an offensive strategy around a young player named John Elway whose father was a coach at nearby California State University Northridge. One of the elder Elway's assistant coaches Dennis Erickson then borrowed Neumeier's innovations and built on them bringing what we now know as the spread offense onto the national stage at the University of Miami in the 1980s. With Erickson's career as a lens this book shows how the inspiration of a high school coach became the dominant offense in college football prepping a whole generation of quarterbacks for the NFL and forever changing the way the game is played. Bart Wright is the sports editor for the Greenville News in South Carolina. "For avid fans Football Revolution will inspire friendly arguments over the staying power of the spreadand what might supersede it someday."Bob Boyles Wall Street Journal University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2013 paperback

DALY DAN
The National Forgotten League: Entertaining Stories And Observations From Pro Football's First Fifty Years
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2012. Softcover. Brand new book. The first fifty years of America's most popular spectator sport have been strangely neglected by historians claiming to tell the "complete story" of pro football. Well here are the early stories that "complete story" has left out. What about the awful secret carried around by Sid Luckman the Bears' Hall of Fame quarterback whose father was a mobster and a murderer Or Steve Hamas who briefly played in the NFL then turned to boxing and beat Max Schmeling conqueror of Joe Louis Or the two one-armed players who suited up for NFL teams in 1945 Or Steelers owner Art Rooney postponing a game in 1938 because of injuries These are just a few of the little-known facts Dan Daly unearths in recounting the untold history of pro football in its first half century. These decades were also full of ideas and experimentation such as the invention of the modern T formation that revolutionized offense unlimited player substitution and soccer-style kicking as well as the emergence of televised pro football as prime-time entertainment. Relying on obscure sources original interviews old game films and statistical databases Daly's extensive research and engaging stories bring the NFL's formative yearsand pro football's folk rootsto life. 44 tables. A sports columnist for the Washington Times Dan Daly has been writing about pro football for more than thirty years and is the winner of numerous awards. His book with Bob O'Donnell The Pro Football Chronicle was judged one of the "truly fine books about the sport" by ESPN.com's Rob Neyer. "Daly's book is a painless primer on the good ol' days when you didn't get a concussion but rather you had your "bell rung" and scoreboards didn't shoot fireworks into the night sky."James Broderick Book Pleasures "This is the most entertaining football history since the author's own Pro Football Chronicle. . . . Daly sports columnist Washington Times relies on personal interviews as well as deep and wide newspaper research to uncover some of the oddest and most engaging long-forgotten stories from pro football's first 50 years. . . . The best football book of the year."Library Journal Review "From Bull Doehring to Marion Motley to Barney Poole and many in between Daly captures the essence of the lore of these and many more players who graced the rugged gridirons of yesterday."Bob Swick Gridiron Greats "Daly collected stories like that in part because as far as he could tell nobody else had done it. But apparently he was also driven by the conviction that the game the pros play today is not nearly as interesting as the one their predecessors played. Readers will have to decide for themselves whether he's right and football fans will have a fine time doing so."Bill Littlefield Only a Game "Relying on obscure sources original interviews old game films and statistical databases Daly's extensive research and engaging stories bring the NFL's formative yearsand pro football's folk rootsto life."Bob Edmonds McCormick Messenger "If you are looking for little known facts fascinating stories and information . . . then this is a good place to begin."Richard C. WHITFORD DAVID
A Payroll To Meet: A Story Of Greed Corruption And Football At Smu
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2013. Softcover. Brand new book. Southern Methodist University in Dallas is one of numerous prestigious universities in Texas. The school's football team was the pride of the university and the city. Before the late 1970s however the relatively small school had trouble recruiting and struggled to keep up with the big-time football universities that were often more than double its size. Under pressure to compete the SMU football program engaged in ethics rules and recruiting violations for years. When the corruption came to light the NCAA handed out its most serious punishment in the history of college sportsthe "death penalty"which cancelled the team's entire 1987 schedule. In A Payroll to Meet author David Whitford details the Mustangs' descent into corruption and the fallout when it was discovered. Most egregiously the football program ran a huge slush fund that was used to pay players from the mid-1970s through 1986. Bill Clements chairman of the SMU board and soon to be reelected governor of Texas knew all about the slush fund before the NCAA did. He opted however to phase out the payments rather than stop them immediately for fear that angry players might go public and create still more problems for SMU. Clements and the athletic director Bob Hitch decided that the football program had "a payroll to meet." David Whitford is an editor at large for Fortune magazine and a regular commentator on sports business and politics for television. He is the author of Extra Innings: A Season in the Senior League and Playing Hardball: The High-Stakes Battle for Baseball's New Franchises. "Whitford's well-documented expos is impressive."Publishers Weekly "Exhibiting admirable sympathy for innocent fans and boosters . . . Whitford makes engrossing even suspenseful the story of recruiting violations and cover-ups that led to the 1987 termination of Southern Methodist University's football program by the National Collegiate Athletic Association NCAA. Combining the histories of Dallas college football SMU chartered in 1911 and the NCAA Whitford explains how athletics became attached to institutions of higher learning--from the 1830s when English sports entered the curriculum to present-day America where sports coaches often earn higher salaries than college presidents."Library Journal "David Whitford does a fine job of detailing a decade of sordid events leading to SMU's banishment from football."F. E. Halpert The Nation "Mr. Whitford has put the entire narrative of the SMU scandal together so that it reads a bit like an athletic version of Jimmy Breslin's novel The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight."New York Times Book Review "Should be required reading for every college president."Frederick C. SURDAM DAVID G
The Postwar Yankees: Baseball's Golden Age Revisited
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln and London: 2013. Softcover. Brand new book. The Yankees and New York baseball entered a golden age between 1949 and 1964 a period during which the city was represented in all but one World Series. While the Yankees dominated however the years were not so golden for the rest of baseball. In The Postwar Yankees: Baseball's Golden Age Revisited David G. Surdam deconstructs this idyllic period to show that while the Yankees piled on pennants and World Series titles through the 1950s Major League Baseball attendance consistently declined and gate-revenue disparity widened through the mid-1950s. Contrary to popular belief the era was already experiencing many problems that fans of today's game bemoan including a competitive imbalance and callous owners who ran the league like a cartel. Fans also found aging decrepit stadiums ill-equipped for the burgeoning automobile culture while television and new forms of leisure competed for their attention. Through an economist's lens Surdam brings together historical documents and off-the-field numbers to reconstruct the period and analyze the roots of the age's enduring mythology examining why the Yankees and other New York teams were consistently among baseball's elite and how economic and social forces set in motion during this golden age shaped the sport into its modern incarnation. David G. Surdam is an assistant professor of economics at the University of Northern Iowa. His work on the economics of sport and the economics of the Civil War has appeared in the Journal of Sports Economics Naval War College Review and the Journal of Economic History among other publications. He also is the author of Northern Naval Superiority and the Economics of the American Civil War. University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln and London: 2013 paperback

CHRISTGAU JOHN
Michael And The Whiz Kids: A Story Of Basketball Race And Suburbia In The 1960s
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2013. Softcover. Brand new book. Imagine a boy five feet tall and one hundred pounds who wants to play high school basketball. Now imagine that he was blind until the age of six and that he's the first black student to attend his suburban school. And there you have Michael Thompson in 1965 in San Bruno California. He played at the school where a young English teacher was coaching "lightweight basketball" a competition for smaller players that has since disappeared. The team that Coach John Christgau put together came to be called the Whiz Kids for the way they rocketed up and down the court led by Michael and invariably winning. Michael and the Whiz Kids tells the story of the team's 1968 championship season. It is a tale of cliffhanger games and players as outsized in character as they are short in stature from the wild-haired bespectacled "Professor" to the well-traveled Latvian dubbed "Suitcase" to the quiet and tenacious "Salt" as in "of the earth." But it is also a tale of the timeof counterculture suburbia integration and racial brawls erupting on the court. In Christgau's deft telling it is an absorbing often comic story of coming of age for coach and Whiz Kids alike. John Christgau is the author of numerous books including Origins of the Jump Shot: Eight Men Who Shook the World of Basketball and Tricksters in the Madhouse: Lakers vs. Globetrotters 1948 both available in Bison Books editions. "This brief book is on a smaller canvas than those of many similar underdog stories but the quality of its writing elevates its magnitude."Mark Levine Booklist University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2013 paperback

JOHNSON JAMES W
The Dandy Dons: Bill Russell K. C. Jones Phil Woolpert And One Of College Basketball's Greatest And Most Innovative Teams
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2009. Softcover. Brand new book. In the mid-1950s three unrecruited black basketball players coached by a white former prison guard who had never before coached a college team led a small Jesuit university in San Francisco to two national titles. The Dandy Dons describes for the first time how the unprecedented accomplishment of the Dons led by coach Phil Woolpert and future hall-of-famers Bill Russell and K. C. Jones paved the way for black talent in major college basketball and transformed the sport. 14 photographs. James W. Johnson traces the backgrounds of the coach and players chronicles the heart-stopping games on the road to the championships and details the Dons' novel techniques: a more vertical game more central defense and intimidation as part of game strategy. He also gives a textured picture of life on an integrated basketball team amid a culture of racism and Jim Crow in mid-twentieth-century America. James W. Johnson is an emeritus professor of journalism at the University of Arizona in Tucson and the author of several books including The Wow Boys: A Coach a Team and a Turning Point in College Football. "This is a carefully researched and passionately written account of one of the greatest amateur teams ever assembled. Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in the history of college basketball." Wes Lukowsky Booklist starred review "The Dons may not have been from the largest school but Johnson makes it clear their impact was far-reaching."Robert S. Brown Sports Literature Association "UCLA's many championships and Texas Western's single dramatic win over Kentucky have perhaps obscured larger truths. As James Johnson shows so very well the University of San Francisco's NCAA champions of 1955 and 1956 may not only have very well been the finest teams ever to win but they surely endured the most racist anguish. And Bill Russell's legacy only looms more majestic with time and the telling."Frank Deford NPR commentator author of The Entitled and senior contributing writer for Sports Illustrated "James Johnson has executed a literary slam dunk worthy of Bill Russell in proving that those USF Dons of 1955 and 1956 were the most frighteningly dominant college basketball team ever. This book is well researched well crafted and well worth any hoop junkie's curiosity."Dave Newhouse columnist of the Oakland Tribune and author of Old Bears University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2009 paperback

THOMAS RON
They Cleared The Lane: The Nba's Black Pioneers
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2004. Softcover. Brand new book. Today black players compose more than eighty percent of the National Basketball Association's rosters providing a strong and valued contribution to professional basketball. In the first half of the twentieth century however pro basketball was tainted by racism as gifted African Americans were denied the opportunity to display their talents. Through in-depth interviews with players their families coaches teammates and league officials Ron Thomas tells the largely untold story of what basketball was really like for the first black NBA players including recent Hall of Fame inductee Earl Lloyd early superstars such as Maurice Stokes and Bill Russell and the league's first black coaches. They Cleared the Lane is both informative and entertaining full of anecdotes and little-known history. Not all the stories have happy endings but this unfortunate truth only emphasizes how much we have gained from the accomplishments of these pioneer athletes. Ron Thomas is director of the Morehouse College Journalism and Sports Program. "They Cleared the Lane: The NBA's Black Pioneers by Ron Thomas came out one year ago this month and the world shrugged. But it should have smiled. At least the sports world should have. Historians should have. And people who love basketball should have smiled and said 'Thank you Ron. Thanks for your journey your persistence your insights your kindness.' . . . There is so much information in this book that you can start anywhere and just read a few pages and then stop and think for a while. . . . The experience Thomas says was 'the longest most significant adventure of my life.' Sports fans should know what he unearthed. Everyone should know how he did it."Rick Telander Chicago Sun-Times "Thomas. . . . has written a fascinating book about the African-American basketball players who never had a chance to display their talents in the first half of the 20th century. . . . The author treats readers to an exceptional insiders view providing in-depth interviews with players their families their coaches and their teammates."Choice. "San Francisco sportswriter Ron Thomas has produced a tribute to these African-American pioneer players that is full of surprises. . . . The book's most intriguing point is that African-Americans have not only contributed to the game of basketball but also transformed it. Baseball is played much the same today as it was when Jackie Robinson broke in but Wilt Chamberlain introduced an entirely new way of playing center forcing the league to change the rules to take away some of his advantages. Bill Russell similarly revolutionized the position on defense. Elgin Baylor all but invented the above-the-rim game and Oscar Robertson patented the triple double."Sports Illustrated "Thomas's is probably one of the two or three best books about professional basketball ever read by this reviewer. The compelling narrative will hold every reader's interest. . . . This book is important not just for basketball fans but for those who want to understand the role played by African Americans in the development of the NBA and big-time sports today."Library Journal "Most long-term NBA fans are aware of the NBA's role at the forefront of sports integration but Thomas places a very human face on it and points out that there were sacrifices made and risks taken to bring the league to its current position as the world's top professional sports attraction."Booklist San Francisco Examiner sportswriter Thomas debuts with a. . . . detailed history of the integration of the National Basketball Association. . . . A good introduction to the men who revolutionized the NBA."Kirkus Reviews University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2004 paperback

ROBERTSON OSCAR
The Big O: My Life My Times My Game
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2010. Softcover. Brand new book. Perhaps the greatest all-around player in basketball history Oscar Robertson revolutionized basketball as a member of the Cincinnati Royals and won a championship with the Milwaukee Bucks. When he was twenty-three in 1962 he accomplished one of basketball's most impressive feats: averaging the triple-double in a single seasona feat never matched since. Cocaptain of the Olympic gold medal team of 1960; named the player of the century by the National Association of Basketball Coaches; named one of the fifty greatest players in NBA history; and inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980Robertson's accolades are as numerous as they are impressive. But The Big O is also the story of a shy black child from a poor family in a segregated city; of the superstar who at the height of his career became the president of the National Basketball Players Association to try to improve conditions for all players. It is the story of the man forced from the game at thirty-four and blacklisted from coaching and broadcasting. But two years after he left basketball after six years of legal wrangling Robertson won his lawsuit against the NBA eliminating the option clause that bound a player to a single NBA team in perpetuity and ending restrictions on free agency. The Big O is the story of how the NBA as we now know it was built; of race in America in the second half of the twentieth century; and of an uncompromising man and a complex hero. Oscar Robertson seen by many as one of the best and most versatile basketball players of his time played in the NBA for the Cincinnati Royals and the Milwaukee Bucks during his fourteen-year professional basketball career. 22 illustrations. "Known as an intelligent player and respected by his peers as an intelligent man Robertson puts an exclamation point on the accolades with this thoughtful reflection on a life lived without compromise. A well-written entertaining and thought-provoking sports autobiographybut would we ever expect less than a triple-double from the Big O"Wes Lukowsky Booklist "Oscar Robertson is an incomparable superstar. He is also a thoughtful man and a man of vision. If you want insight into what formed Oscar in the crucial years of his youth look here. It's a great book."Kareem Abdul-Jabbar "As one of the NBA's all-time greats Oscar Robertson has much to pass on to both his old fans and young basketball enthusiasts perhaps unfamiliar with his legacy."Publishers Weekly "Oscar Robertson is remarkably honest in his autobiography The Big O: My Life My Times My Game. . . . It's a fun read."Zach Lowe SI.com "Oscar was one of basketball's great leaders and his life is one of basketball's great stories. He was unafraid unabashed and unmatched in everything he did. There will never be another like him."Bill Russell "Oscar Robertson was never a rookie. He was the measuring stick for how a player should play. It is an honor to know him and to have competed against him. He is a man for the ages."Jerry West University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2010 paperback

KILPATRICK BILL
Brassies Mashies And Bootleg Scotch: Growing Up On America's First Heroic Golf Course
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2011. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. A hundred years or so ago kids growing up in St. Andrews Scotland kids like Bill Kilpatrick's father took to golf as naturally as to breathing. Accordingly the prevailing opinion was that any layabout could play golf whereas a greenkeeper was someone to be reckoned with. And a greenkeeper a term much preferred to "golf course superintendent" was what Kilpatrick's father became. Kilpatrick's memoir of growing up on golf courses is at once a window on another timewhen golf was played mainly with balata balls hickory shafts and handmade spoons mashies and cleeksand a ground-level view of what maintaining a golf course meant when artisanship instinct and experience carried the day. A charming narrative of a boy's relationship with his adored occasionally impatient and always forgiving father Brassies Mashies and Bootleg Scotch takes us to some of the most notable golf clubs in America and introduces us to a delightful cast of characters from giants of golf history to behind-the-scenes eccentrics to walk-on stars like New York Giants pitcher Hal Schumacher. Readers get a rare glimpse of a vanished world through Kilpatrick's recollections of the daily routines of his father as a dedicated greenkeeper and of his own experiences as a caddy on the courses that were his family's way of life. Let There Be Pebble: A Middle-handicapper's Year In America's Garden Of Golf
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2011. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. It was "scary" Jack Nicklaus said of Pebble Beach and gave him nightmares so acute he famously woke his wife on the eve of his 1972 U.S. Open victory totally spooked. "It's not a golf course" sportswriter Jim Murray wrote "it's a hellship." Golf writer Dan Jenkins once joked that the famed venue of the Bing Crosby National Pro-Am should be dubbed "Double Bogey-by-the-Sea." A one-time failed Division One golf walk-on Zachary Michael Jack opts to stare down an early midlife crisis by chronicling a U.S. Open year spent at Pebble Beach object of his ailing father's fantasies and site of the nation's number one public course and its fairy-tale host town Carmel-by-the-Sea California. There along the blue Pacific he traces the colorful capricious and comical world of golf on the Monterey Peninsula as never before via interviews with legends of the game Johnny Miller Gary Player and Tom Watson; with today's brightest starsPadraig Harrington Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson; and with some of its most famous celebrity linkstersactor Bill Murray Olympic soccer star Brandi Chastain and billionaire entrepreneur Charles Schwab. Conducting more than one hundred interviews Jack ranges far and wide to get the scoop talking golfing haunts with bestselling golf novelist Michael Murphy; teeing up with members of a Carmel-based worldwide golfing society devoted to mystical play; learning to play Pebble at the knee of one of the Top 50 Golf Teachers in America and with a Carmel-based journeyman pro described as "a golf savant"; and raising a cup with a lifelong Pebble Beach resident and caddy who unbeknownst to the hackers he shepherds is a Hall of Fame golfer. By turns hilarious haunting and historic Let There Be Pebble reveals the utter uniquenessthe people the rich history the unforgettable setting and sporting cultureof this one-of-a-kind golfing cathedral. A golf writer and former newspaper sports editor Zachary Michael Jack has authored or edited more than a dozen books including the anthology Inside the Ropes: Sportswriters Get Their Game On available in a Bison Books edition. He teaches literary sportswriting and seminars in sports studies as an associate professor of English at North Central College in Naperville Illinois. "There's plenty to satisfy entertain and prod most golfers to want to read this one on Pebble. . . . An absolute winner!"Bob Koczor Golf Today "Few courses have spawned as many published words as Pebble Beach. It's unlikely that any writer will ever tackle this subject with the skill displayed by Jack."Martin Kaufmann Golf Week "Every golfer goes through some variation of the mid-life crisis. Not everyone gets to do it on the Monterrey Peninsula. Once the obvious envy is removed from the equation what's left is an inviting escapade into discoveringthrough a diverse cast from Michael Murphy and Clint Eastwood to the caddie corps and the author himselfwhy Pebble and its high-rent environs are always so absorbing especially in an Open season."Golf.com "A real-life golf fantasy year boldly lived and exuberantly told."Kirkus "Like the author himself the reader of Let There Be Pebble won't play golf one bit better at the end of the book. But there are enough laughs and even a few poignant moments in between to satisfy any golfer."Jack Shakely Foreword "A combination of history celebrity-chasing and a few fleeting glimpses behind the "out of bounds" tapes strung around the iconic golf course this book will not only provide a few laughs but also offer some revealing looks at the folks who make events like the U.S. Open and the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am tournaments function smoothly."Robert Walch Salinas Californian Awards: Kirkus Reviews Great Sports-Related Titles of 2011 GOLF Magazine Best Books of 2011 2011 Golf Digest Editor's Pick University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2011 hardcover

SHIELDS DAVID; LIPSYTE ROBERT INTRODUCTION
Body Politic: The Great American Sports Machine
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: 2007. Softcover. Brand new book. In Body Politic David Shields looks at contemporary America and its mythology through the lens of professional and college sports. The result is an unusually insightful and provocative book about an empire in denial. Shields relentlessly examines the way we tell our sports stories both fictional and nonfictional considers the kinds of athletes we choose as heroes and delineates the lessons and values we glean from sports. He explores the intricate and telling relationships between players and coaches black and white players immigrant and native players male and female players players and broadcasters players and fans and players and advertisers. In the process he shows us the stories we Americans tell ourselves about the kind of people we believe ourselves to be. David Shields is a professor of English at the University of Washington and the author of seven previous books including Heroes: A Novel and Black Planet: Facing Race during an NBA Season both available in Bison Books editions. Robert Lipsyte a longtime sports and city columnist for the New York Times is the author of sixteen books including most recently the novel Raiders Night. "A thinking person's collection of sports essays. . . . The author is a mild reflective man who suspects there is a strong element of resurrection and salvation in sports . . . and who can cobble together a fluid chapter out of sporting clichs: ten pages that sound either like wacky Shakespeare or a whole lot of ironic license plates tied end-to-end. Pensive and shrewd."Kirkus "Shields elucidates superbly the paradox of sports coverage: although feats of the body seem to defy language sports is nonetheless 'imprisoned by its prevailing rhetoric.' The ambition in these piercing essays is to discern the reality behind the rhetoric."Daniel G. Habib Sports Illustrated "Sweeping insights . . . an intellectual tour de force."Steve Weinberg St. Louis Post-Dispatch "Like Charles Barkley Shields is outspoken controversial and never dull."Minneapolis Star Tribune "Shields has carved out a singular place for himself as the poet of sports writing."Regina Hackett Seattle Post-Intelligencer "Shields is one of the most necessary if discomfiting commentators on American sports today. In this collection of slyly observant personally inflected essays he patiently lays out the various elements of athletic myth that come wrapped seamlessly around other signature American obsessionsmoney celebrity self-reliance and most of all race."Chris Lehman Washington Post University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln: 2007 paperback

HARNEY THOMAS W
Portraits From The Park: Comisky Park Photographs 1973-1990
Columbia College Chicago Press Chicago: 2013. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Chicago's old Comiskey Park home to the White Sox until 1990 is as essential to the city's cultural history as it is to baseball's. From the first day that Thomas W. Harney set out to photograph fans in the ballpark he felt at home there owing to memories of games with his father and grandfather. It became his ongoing subject as well as a setting that would inspire his growing reputation as a street photographer. The sequence of portraits Harney took of White Sox fans between 1973 and the last game played at the parkSeptember 30 1990captures the essence of baseball fandom: pregame excitement exploration of the ballpark the quiet moments in between plays the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. Most importantly these portraits capture the aura of "Old Comiskey" a ballpark that looms large in the memories of Chicagoans and baseball fans alike. "With the passage of almost twenty years since the series was begun the pictures present us with a closed world where the anthropology of the crowd and the individual can be studied. . . . Harney's people have an internal life that comes through sometimes as spectators fully engaged in the drama of the game but often when they appear with a self-aware gaze both looking in and looking out at the viewer." --Ed Maldonado former curator and director of the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs Chicago Book Review "Harney has captured in rich black and white moments many of them quiet moments some of them private moments all of them compelling moments. Each moment tells a story and in doing so Portraits from the Park captures a slice of history from the former some might say 'true' home of the White Sox. HARDOUIN FUGIER ELISABETH
Bullfighting: A Troubled History
Reaktion Books London: 2010. Softcover. Brand new book. Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter's honor" wrote Ernest Hemingway in Death in the Afternoon. Art Ritual Sport Cruelty Though opinions are divided one thing is certainbullfighting sparks passionate responses. Supporters argue that bullfighting is a culturally important tradition stretching back thousands of years; while animal rights groups argue that it is cruel and barbaric causing unnecessary suffering to both bulls and horses. In Bullfighting: A Troubled History Elisabeth Hardouin-Fugier brings clarity to this debate through an exploration of the long history of killing bulls as public spectacle. This book is the first cross-cultural study of bullfighting covering Europe North America and Latin America. Hardouin-Fugier shows how each continent has its own unique style and tools of the trade. For example in North America the favored technique is grabbing the bull by the horns and in Europe the bull is run through with a sword. In the late 1700s bullfights became mass leisure activities with paying spectators packing into arenasthe classic bullfight of popular imagination. It was at this time that the bullfight became a big business and the bullfighter became a celebrity. In this vivid and comprehensive history Hardouin-Fugier also explores the extensive influence of the bullfight on art literature and culture from the paintings of Goya to the writings of Georges Bataille. Enriched with many fascinating and sometimes disturbing illustrations Bullfighting presents a discerning and intelligent approach to a divisive practice. Hardouin-Fugier's informative history will enthrall anyone who has been curious aboutbullfightingsupporters and detractors alike. "A History of Bullfighting is a compact digestible paperback from Reaktion Books in which the author Elisabeth Hardouin-Fugier takes the reader down the bload-soaked streets of Seville in the eighteenth century to the blood-soaked arenas of Latin American in the nineteenth to the blood-soaked manuscripts of Bataille and Hemingway in thte twentieth. . . . The book is spectacular in its own right--not just in its descriptions but in its images culled from bullfighting's rich visual history." --New Yorker Book Bench blog "A terrific history of and manifesto against bullfighting by the French art historian Elisabeth Hardouin-Fugier. She falls squarely in the reformist camp and her history argues that the sport seduced artists who glamorized and abstracted a cruel and ugly pursuit into something that bore little resemblance to bullfighting itself. . . . She stresses the brutal labor conditions of the bull farms and vividly evokes the persistent cruelty of the life of a fighting bull and quotes approvingly the judgment of the nineteenth-century French journalist Fleuriot de Langle who encountered the sport on a trip south: 'Everything appalls here.' . . . Like so many other writers on this ghoulish subject Hardouin-Fugier's writing on bullfighting is really writing about the seduction of death. . . . that bullfighting had to offer was only a stylized form of valor and an aesthetics of destruction. In the bullring there was no transcendence of death just death itself." --Ben Wallace-Wells New Republic "In this broad deconstruction of the meanings of bullfighting Hardouin-Fugier musters copious data through wide-ranging often novel examples--art literature chronicles. This results in a powerful demythologization of the event and its meanings. Well-illustrated chapters cover history practices artistic interpretations and sociocultural movements that have adopted or rejected the bullfight as a key symbol." --Choice Reaktion Books, London: 2010 paperback

PETERSON DAVID
The Drake Relays: America's Athletic Classic
University of Iowa Press Iowa City: 2014. Softcover. Brand new book. The Drake Relays are one of the iconic events of track and field in the United States. World and Olympic champions test their speed and stamina on the famed Blue Oval in Des Moines Iowa every April and by spring 2013 they had set fourteen world records and fifty-one American records. But unlike most other top meets this one also features college athletes from all over the country and high school athletes from across Iowa giving them the experience of a lifetimecompeting on the same track with the elite in their sport. This mix brings many enthusiastic spectators to the stadium and makes for an unusually close bond between fans and athletesit's as if everyone's family is there cheering. Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer David Peterson has been covering the Drake Relays for nearly forty years but his love affair with the meet started earlier when he ran on three winning relay teams there for Kansas State University. Now drawing upon an unmatched personal archive he offers the pictures of a lifetime spent on the Blue Oval. He captures on camera athletes of all levels in triumph and defeat in mid-stride or leap embracing their fans their moms and dads and their kids. In addition to the stars of the past such as Carl Lewis Suzy Favor Hamilton and Herschel Walker and those of the '00s like Lolo Jones and Jeremy Wariner we see teenagers who may be the stars of the future as well as the many athletes who will never be famous but nonetheless show themselvesand their sportat their best. A beautiful celebration of the Drake Relays and the diverse sports that make up "track and field" this book will evoke memories and inspire runners throwers and jumpers everywhere. "David Peterson brings readers to the finish line with his astounding photographic tribute to the Drake Relays. Filled with action and drama and taken with the eye of a former college track competitor Peterson's images evoke the athleticism and emotion of America's favorite track meet and bring out the track fan in all of us."Damian Strohmeyer contributing photographer Sports Illustrated "To capture the drama and excitement of the Iowa institution that is the Drake Relays it takes a special photographer steeped in the lore and legend of the event and the great athletes that make it a classic. Dave Peterson a former record-setting collegiate runner and award-winning photographer has done that with this very personal book."Jeff Jacobsen staff photographer Kansas Athletics "If as the great sports commentator Heywood Hale Broun has said 'Sports do not build character. They reveal it' then herein the masterful images of David Petersonis character revealed beautifully powerfully fully."Chris Johns editor in chief National Geographic "When storied history and glimpsed future meet on the Blue Oval every spring they create an experience too powerful to captureyet that's just what David Peterson has done. The Drake Relays is an extraordinary mix of performance and place but mostly as Peterson sayswith both evocative word and striking imageryit's a love affair."Beth Wilson Marketing and Communications Drake University University of Iowa Press, Iowa City: 2014 paperback

SMITH MARK F. EDITOR
Golf Science: Optimum Performance From Tee To Green
University of Chicago Press Chicago and London: 2013. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Golf is perhaps the most complicated simple game ever invented. Golfing greats like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods make the sport look easy but anyone who has ever picked up a club knows how truly frustrating golf can be. The success of each shot depends on a diverse range of factors from the club you choose and the speed with which you swing it to your mood the weather and even the type and cut of the grass. Science plays a crucial role in most if not all of these factors and in Golf Science sports science expert Mark F. Smith investigates the cutting-edge scientific wonders that take the ball from tee to hole. Each chapter explores a different facet of the gamemind and body the swing the equipment the environment coaching with technology the practice process and the scoreand is organized around a series of questions. What happens in the brain during the preshot routine Does head movement hinder swing performance Will I hit the ball farther with a longer driver Why do I lose distance into the wind What can I learn from watching my ball in flight How should practice be structured What are the key stats in golf that I need to know Each question is examined with the aid of explanatory diagrams and illustrations and the book can be used to search for particular topics or read straight through for a comprehensive overview of how golfer and equipment work together. A must-have for anyone who delights in the spirit of the game Golf Science will be enjoyed not only by professionals and coaches but also by spectators of the PGA Tour and anyone who enjoys a round of eighteen holes on the weekend. "UK-based exercise physiology researcher Mark F. Smith comfortably fits his vast knowledge of the game and its intricacies into 192 pages of diagrams photos and text. Each section details an aspect of the game including the mind and body the swing equipment and practice. Perhaps its greatest strength is that it's more informational than instructional. Smith a member of the International Editorial Board for the World Scientific Congress of Golf relays his knowledge in an unimposing manner allowing the reader to pick and choose what to apply. Valuable to players of any level." --Brendan Mohler Golf Digestix "I love Golf Science. . . . It is not light reading by any means but it is enlightening." --Shelf Awareness "An informative scientific approach to golf in a series of common questions with some surprising and helpful answers." --Bill Pennington The New York Times University of Chicago Press, Chicago and London: (2013) hardcover

HAVICK JOHN
The Ghosts Of Nascar: The Harlan Boys And The First Daytona 500
University of Iowa Press Iowa City: 2013. Softcover. Brand new book. Who won the First Daytona 500 Fans still debate whether it was midwestern champion Johnny Beauchamp declared the victor at the finish line or longtime NASCAR driver Lee Petty declared the official winner a few days after the race. The Ghosts of NASCAR puts the controversial finish under a microscope. Author John Havick interviewed scores of people analyzed film of the race and pored over newspaper accounts of the event. He uses this information and his deep knowledge of the sport as it worked then to determine what probably happened. But he also tells a much bigger story: the story of how Johnny Beauchampand his Harlan Iowa compatriots mechanic Dale Swanson and driver Tiny Lundended up in Florida driving in the 1959 Daytona race. The Ghosts of NASCAR details how the Harlan Boys turned to racing cars to have fun and to escape the limited opportunities for poor boys in rural southwestern Iowa. As auto racing became more popular and better organized in the 1950s Swanson Lund and Beauchamp battled dozens of rivals and came to dominate the sport in the Midwest. By the later part of the decade the three men were ready to take on the competition in the South's growing NASCAR circuit. One of the top mechanics of the day Swanson literally wrote the book on race cars at Chevrolet's clandestine racing shop in Atlanta Georgia while Beauchamp and Lund proved themselves worthy competitors. It all came to a head on the brand-new Daytona track in 1959. The Harlan Boys' long careers and midwestern racing in general have largely faded from memory. The Ghosts of NASCAR recaptures it all: how they negotiated the corners on dirt tracks and passed or spun out their opponents; how officials tore down cars after races to make sure they conformed to track rules; the mix of violence and camaraderie among fierce competitors; and the struggles to organize and regulate the sport. One of very few accounts of 1950s midwestern stock car racing The Ghosts of NASCAR is told by a man who was there during the sport's earliest days. When John Havick's grandfather sold his car to local boy and aspiring racecar driver Johnny Beauchamp the young Havick went to see how the car performed. Falling in love with the sport he kept scrapbooks of newspaper articles and programs tracking the triumphs and defeats of Beauchamp Tiny Lund and many other successful racers from the town of Harlan Iowa. Then he went away to high school and college leaving his childhood hobby behind but never forgetting it. After a career teaching public policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology he revived his interest in the sport and decided to tackle one of its longtime controversies: who really won the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959 The result of years of research and scores of interviews this book tells the whole story. John Havick lives in Stone Mountain Georgia. "Dale Swanson was a top race mechanic careful and creative. Tiny Lund was a good ferocious competitor particularly on dirt tracks and Johnny Beauchamp in fewer than thirty races proved he could race and win against the top NASCAR drivers. This book describes how these three learned to compete on midwestern tracks. . . . It is a story not to be missed."Rex White 1960 NASCAR Grand National Champion "A detailed account of stock car racing's overlooked pre-TV days a simpler era when a big-hearted lead-footed small-town midwestern boy could reach NASCAR's top tiers. This is more than an investigation of the controversial first Daytona 500. It's the story of the sport's coming of age."Neal Thompson author Driving with the Devil: Southern Moonshine Detroit Wheels and the Birth of NASCAR "John Havick has written an important informative account of the early days of racing in the Midwest. He focuses on the life and times of Iowan Johnny Beauchamp the Ghost of Playland Park the declared victor of the very first Daytona 500until NASCAR czar Bill France and racing legend Lee Petty conspired to cheat him out of his victory. The Ghosts of NASCAR is a winner."Peter Golenbock author American Zoom The Last Lap and NASCAR Confidential University of Iowa Press, Iowa City: 2013 paperback

LAMB CHRIS
Blackout: The Untold Story Of Jackie Robinson's First Spring Training
University of Nebraska Press Lincoln: . Softcover. Brand new book. In the spring of 1946 following the defeat of Hitler's Germany America found itself still struggling with the subtler but no less insidious tyrannies of racism and segregation at home. In the midst of it all Jackie Robinson a full year away from breaking major league baseball's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers was undergoing a harrowing dress rehearsal for integrationhis first spring training as a minor league prospect with the Montreal Royals Brooklyn's AAA team. In Blackout Chris Lamb tells what happened during these six weeks in segregated Floridasix weeks that would become a critical juncture for the national pastime and for an American society on the threshold of a civil rights revolution. Blackout chronicles Robinson's tremendous ordeal during that crucial spring traininghow he struggled on the field and off. The restaurants and hotels that welcomed his white teammates were closed to him and in one city after another he was prohibited from taking the field. Steeping his story in its complex cultural context Lamb describes Robinson's determination and anxiety the reaction of the black and white communities to his appearance and the unique and influential role of the pressmainstream reporting the alternative black weeklies and the Communist Daily Workerin the integration of baseball. Told here in detail for the first time this story brilliantly encapsulates the larger history of a man a sport and a nation on the verge of great and enduring change. SMITH MARGARET SUPPLEE
American Ski Resort: Architecture Style Experience
University of Oklahoma Press Norman: 2013. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. One of America's most popular sports skiing isall about freedom. A lavishly illustrated exploration of the American ski resort and its evolution across time. Skiers enjoy the thrll of adventure an escape from city life and a close encounter with nature at its most rugged and majestic. And yet paradoxically the experience of skiing for most Americans is inextricably linked to architecture for our journey down the mountainside is shaped by the ski resort. In this magnificent book architectural historian Margaret Supplee Smith traces the evolution of the ski resort in North America. Brimmng with photographs of spectacular scenery intriguing buildings and colorful personalities American Ski Resort is the first book to explore the combined phenomena of skiing tourism and achitecture from a national perspective. Focusing on destination ski resorts in New England the Rocky Mountains the Far West and southern California Smith examines the architecture of recreational skiing from the 1930s to 1990 showing how small family-operated businesses evolved into the massive theme-oriented multipurpose ski establishments of today. The narrative begins with the origins of the American winter recreation industry - surprisingly in the midst of the Great Depression. She then shows how American ski resorts challenged the supremacy of the Europen Alps and explains the role that architecture played in this shift. According to Smith skiing is an archtypical American edxperience reflecting our common tendency toward swift ascent overreaching ambition and thudding downfall - followed by picking ourselves up dusting ourselves off and starting all over again. As the ski industry today faces problems of exclusivity climate change a vulnerable economy and an aging skier demographic it must itself seek new ways to start all over again - with ski resort architecture continuing to define that reinvention. Margaret Supplee Smith is Harold W. Tribble Professor of Art emerita at Wake Forest University Winston-Salem North Carolina. During her ten years of research for this book she has lectured and written widely on ski resort architecture and consulted for the city of Aspen on its modern architecture. She is coauthor of the award-winning North Carolina Women: Makng History. 198 color photos 107 black and white illustrations 1 map. University of Oklahoma Press, Norman: 2013 hardcover
