First edition of these very scarce dealer showroom catalogues for the 1961 Oldsmobile automobiles which featured the introduction of the unique mid-size F-85 powered by a aluminum 215 cubic inch V-8 trying to compete with similar offerings by Buick and Pontiac. The full size line-up models featured an all-new smaller streamlined and rounded body and chassis with perimeter “Guard Beam†frame and all-coil suspension replaced the leaf springs. All of the full-size Oldsmobiles were powered by the 394 cubic-inch Rocket V8 with the Dynamic 88 featuring a 2-barrel 250 horsepower version. The Super 88 could be purchased with a 4-barrel 394 Skyrocket V8 rated at 325 horsepower. These catalogues also include the supplement for the convertible-only “Starfire†which was introduced in mid-1961 and was based on the Super 88 convertible sporting leather bucket seats a center console with floor shifter -- the first U.S. full-sized production car to feature an automatic transmission with console-mounted floor shifter. First edition of these very scarce dealer showroom catalogues for the 1962 Oldsmobile automobiles which featured the introduction of the 2-door hardtop Starfire to join the convertible line-up just introduced in mid-1961 as well as the turbo-charged Jetfire. The “Starfire†which was introduced in mid-1961 was based on the Super 88 convertible sporting leather bucket seats a center console with floor shifter -- the first U.S. full-sized production car to feature an automatic transmission with console-mounted floor shifter. In addition it featured a high performance engine. The 1962 Jeftire was based on the compact F-85 2-door hardtop but these models were fitted with a Garrett turbocharger that relied on “Turbo Rocket Fluid†to prevent the 10.25- compression V-8 from detonating. Unfortunately many Oldsmobile drivers failed to maintain and drive the cars properly so either they had run the fluid tank dry losing turbo power or had not driven the car hard enough to generate boos and the assemblies froze over time. ‎An exceptional album of 24 silver gelatin photographs chronicling the historic Bonneville Flats streamliner “Tornado†built and raced by Lee’s Speed Shop including views of the shop racing at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah and camera-ready proofs for the 1953 Hod Rod Magazine article.‎

Recent limp black cloth post-binder gilt lettering stamped on front cover an excellent exemplar. This historic photo album records the construction and racing of Lee Chapel’s “Tornado Special†in 1952 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Lee’s Speed Shop was one of the original members of the Dry Lakes Racers Bonneville 200 MPH Club who held their first meeting in September 1953 at the Bonneville Nationals. The “Tornado Special†was a Class C Streamliner which driven by John “Sonny†Rogers achieved a two-way average speed of 224.144 mph at Bonneville in 1952 featuring an unsprung front end torsion bars at the rear with a novel trunnion arrangement for pivoting the engine fitted with a 295 cubic in. Mercury engine equipped with a Lee’s Speed Shop “Tornado†overhead valve conversion. The front end was built from a 36 Ford and had split radius rods mounted to a tubular frame and the rear end was a reworked 1932 Ford Model A. The Tornado Special crashed in 1953 and the body was left at Bonneville while many of the parts were salvaged. Chapel 1905-1966 opened his first speed shop while sharing space with a junkyard in 1928 at 3263 San Fernando Road in LA which he later moved to 4557 Alhambra Ave. from 1933 to 1937. In 1937 he closed the shop to tour the country racing open wheel midget cars until he reopened his Lee’s Speed Shop at 1143 East 14th St. in Oakland CA. He served during World War II as a TEC4 until discharge in 1945 whereupon he resumed his Speed Shop in Oakland. Lee’s Speed Shop was a pioneer in the southern California Hot Rod scene who along with George Wight blazed the used hot rod parts trail. First edition of this well-illustrated dealer catalogue promoting the very scarce 1942 Plymouths which included the P14S for the less expensive models and the P14C for the top of the line. Plymouth had begun early production of the 1942 models because it was evident at the end of 1941 that automobile production would be taking a back seat to military orders. The 1942 models received a more massive look running boards were concealed by the lower part of the door grille bars were reduced to just 5 heavy bars and a more massive bumper protected the front license plate. Only 152427 were produced before the assembly line was shut down for war production January 31 1942. Of particular interest is the beautiful illustration for the 1942 DeLuxe Woodie Station Wagon. Red ribbed embossed pictorial cloth cover art illustration of Vanderbilt in his Mercedes which set the 1904 land speed record of 92.3 mph at Daytona Beach FL gilt lettering & gilt ruling t.e.g. minor rubbing bumping to corners head & foot of spine couple very small holes at upper front hinge in cloth slightly shaken still G copy w/ faint ownership and gift inscription of the book being given to Peter C. Taylor from Peter Breymeier in 1941. Breymeier 1911-1991 was the son of Fred Breymeier b. 1876 noted Montclair NJ banker and auto racing enthusiast who had received the book originally from Vanderbilt. First edition of second of these privately printed logs documenting the travels through Europe by the famed automobile racing enthusiast -- founder of the Vanderbilt Cup the first major trophy in American auto racing and avid supporter of the America’s Cup yacht races. This motoring memoir begins with the Vanderbilt’s travels in his one of his famed 1907 35-45 HP Renaults which Willie K had talked the company into producing after their 1906 French Grand Prix race win with the 13-liter racing car driven by Ferenc Szisz. One of these won the Morris Park 24-Hour race in October 1907 and subsequently one was used by Vanderbilt to trek over Europe from Liverpool to London then onto Paris over to Germany through the Austrian Tyrols then into Switzerland over to Monte Carlo and returned to Lyons. These are followed by accounts of his travels through Spain in a 1909 55-HP Mercedes witnessing the bull fights in Madrid through the Spanish Countryside and down to Seville followed by a trip through Northern Europe which lasted until 1910. The final trip from southern France around the entire countries of Spain & Portugal in 1911 were driven in a 1911 60-HP Mercedes fitted with a tonneau body and Michelin tires and hood and extra trunk rack in the back. Willie K. Vanderbilt 1878-1944 was a Vanderbilt scion served in World War I on the USS Tarantula on patrol off New York and New Jersey and was a skilled automobile and yacht racer. About 200 copies were printed of these “Log of my Motor†for friends and fellow motoring enthusiasts during the Brass Era carefully documenting mileage road conditions places visited as well as the performance of the various cars. The first work by Boex under his pseudonym details the auto routes through the French Alps from Nice up through Barcelonnette St. Michel St. Jean ChamberySt. Gervais and into Switzerland. The striking landscapes were executed by Jeanes b. 1862 noted landscape painter who traveled through the Alps and Tyrol extensively worked alongside Louis Anquetin and was featured at the Fall Salon and at the Independent Artists Society in 1906 for his distemper paintings of the Alps and Venice. Berliet was a pioneering French manufacturer of automobiles buses trucks and military vehicles which would eventually merge with Renault and then Citroen. Their 1912 models featured here in the catalogue second part sported from 12 to 40 horsepower 4 cylinder engines and included 2 and 4-passenger touring cars cabriolets limousines large automobile touring vehicles and a very sporty 2-seater runabout quite similar to the 1912 Mercedes. With 40 photographs 1 linen-backed 6 real photo poscards 3 Kruxo split-backs 37 sized 5 x 7 in. some with white borders nearly all with photographer’s stamps on versos and all with pencil annotations dating the vehicle and often the race occasional chipping to corners some creasing minor soiling to a few; three sized 8 x 10 in. 1 sized 7.5 x 9.5 in. backed in gray linen hand-colouring of porcelain advertising sign in image. All images preserved in archival mylar sleeves recent post-binder gilt lettering stamped on front cover. This outstanding archive of factory photographs offers an invaluable visual record of an exciting period of time in the Brass Era which marked the shift from the wealthy afficionado driving very expensive coach-built automobiles to the average auto enthusiast being able to road race and hill climb. The images include: two Columbia 35-40 Horse-power Mark XLV touring cars which in 1905 won a number of road races in Florida hill-climbing events in Springfield and Worcester MA and several other track events; a 1906 Clement-Bayard 100 horsepower auto participating in the 1906 Glidden Tour race from Buffalo NY to Mt. Washington NH competing for the Deming Trophy; a 1907 American Morse Model B Runabout and another of a 1907 Welch Touring Car featuring overhead camshaft at the Giants’ Despair Hillclimb the oldest continuing motorsports event in Pennsylvania which has run next at Wilkes-Barre PA since 1906; Len Zengle racing his 1908 Acme at the 1908 American Grand Prize in Savannah GA; S.B. Stevens racing the Fiat Cyclone at Ormond-Daytona Beach races in 1908 -- Cedrino would be killed racing the car later that year at Pimlico; a very scarce image of a 1909 White Star Touring car built in Atlanta GA -- the company went under in 1911; as well as races featuring 1908 Pierce Arrows 1908 Studebakers a 1909 Palmer-Singer racing in Pittsburgh PA 1910 Regal 1910 Selden a 1911 Cole Flier Touring car running on solid tires and many more. Of particular interest are the larger photographs including a nicely hand-coloured image of a Gardner Car and Peerless dealership with hand-coloured porcelain sign about 1922 hanging from the front of the brick front; Chalmer’s Automobiles at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition hall; and even a Texas gasoline and tires dealership with large visible signage. In addition there is a very scarce image of a Hanover 1922 Roadster which was billed as the most reasonably priced car in the world at $ 345.00 and was fitted with a detachable trunk. Less than 200 were ever produced within the few years the company operated. The six Real Photo Postcards feature such images as Spencer Wishart 1889-1914 a pioneering Indianapolis 500 race car driver in his Type 35R Mercer Raceabout which was capable of over 90 mph and won 5 of the first 6 Indy 500 Races. Wishart was killed in his Raceabout at Elgin IL in 1914. Another shows Ralph de Palma in his Gray Ghost Mercedes which won the 1912 Vanderbilt Cup at Santa Monica CA. De Palma would eventually compete for over 27 years and raced in 2889 auto races winning 2557 of them. Spooner & Wells were very successful commercial photographers for the burgeoning automobile industry in Detroit MI and in New York. Before 1915 they were one of the primary photographers for the Ford Motor Company before they established their own in-house Photographic Department and were especially well-known for their factory photo albums for the early Brass Era automakers. Their original photographs are quite scarce in the market or in institutional collections. Large poster 36 x 21.25 ins. colour lithograph mounted on thick board pinholes to corners minor rubbing & edgewear minor chipping to corners some rubbing to the fore-edges of board slight scuffing still a G and bright example professionally cleaned and shrunkwrapped on archival foam core. First edition of this exceedingly scarce original dealership showroom display poster for the 1937 Ford Deluxe Tudor Sedan which was introduced in November 1936. The car came equipped with the Flathead V-8 generated 85 horsepower and could reach nearly 80 m.p.h. The 1937 was the first year Ford built coachwork with all steel construction the cars featured a more rounded and smooth look the front grill was V-shaped and faired-in headlights were offered stock. The decision to integrate the famed teardrop shaped headlamps into the front fenders had been made by Edsel Ford and designer E.T. Bob Gregorie who decided to opt for the industrial look of flat body panels flowing fender lines and a raked windshield. Deluxe models had interiors with walnut wood grain window moldings and more exterior trim bright work. They had two matched-tone horns behind the radiator grille two taillights swivel-type sunvisors and the wheels were dressed up with chrome trim. These Dealership posters were typically printed on very thin paper and mounted on boards and unlike porcelain or tin advertising signs these were usually thrown away with the introduction of the next year’s promotional material so they are very scarce.
