One tall double-sided silk ribbon front elaborately embroidered purple w/ American Flag at upper fore-edge Protestant symbols in center including image of King William a Bible and School House chromolithograph pin in orange & gilt by W. & H. of Newark NJ black silk ribbon on verso silver lettering and bust of Abraham Lincoln gold braid on one side silver on other minor dustsoiling slight darkening to ribbon very slight fraying still a VG exemplar. This exceedingly scarce Loyal Orange Lodge No. 79 remembrance ribbon for Abraham Lincoln was issued by the Portland Oregon Orange Order in the 1890s to celebrate Protestant values and to heavily promote independent public schools away from Catholic Church control. The Orange Order was founded in September 1795 after the Battle of the Diamond outside a small village in Northern Ireland and became a Protestant Secret Society loosely based on Freemasonry ritual. The victory by King William III over King James of Scotland in 1690 at the River Boyne is remembered with great affection and eventually the fraternal group would number over 100000 members at the end of the 19th century largely drawn from Northern Ireland and Northern Irish immigrants. President Abraham Lincoln delivered his memorable Gettysburg Address on November 19 1863. AM. 2pg. 8" x 12 ½". Nov 12 1929. Athlone Ireland. A copy of Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address written in Gaelic in 1929. It is written on two sheets of paper and there is a notation "Compliments of Mr & Mrs PF Killelea Atlone Ireland" at the conclusion in green ink. The English text would read: "Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation conceived in Liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But in a larger sense we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow—this ground. The brave men living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people by the people for the people shall not perish from the earth." Includes substantial if not entirely complete portions of Whitman's lecture on Lincoln at Steck Hall in New York. Uncommon in any condidtion. One of Whitman's most important speeches the first paragraph of the article states "The poet Walt Whitman made his beginning as a lecturer Monday night at Steck Hall in Fourteenth Street. The subject was the death of Abraham Lincoln. He reads from notes sitting in a chair since he is much disabled from paralysis. He desires engagements as a reader of his own poems and a lecturer." A transcription of the lecture thus follows and runs to two and a half long columns. This is the original of Whitman's famous essay on Lincoln's death often anthologized a remarkable Whitman item. . Original full dark blue-green pebbled cloth gilt spine titles; light wear to extremities. Bookplate of the Essex Institute; small rubber stamp on title C.W. Post College Documents Library. The Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom for all slaves by January 1 1863. This proclamation is dated January 2 1863. Lincoln in writing this one of the most important documents in all US history declared "And by virtue of the power and fpr the purpose aforesaid I do order and declare that all persons held as slaves within said designated States and parts of the States are and henceforward shall be free; and that the Executive government of the United States including the military and naval authorities thereof will recognize and maintain the freedom of said persons." / The War Orders of 1863 are among the most historical during the Civil War. The volume includes: General Orders No.1: Emancipation Proclamation Liberty for Slaves. / General Orders No.100: The Lieber Code How soldiers should conduct ethically themselves in wartime. / General Orders No. 143: Order for the creation of the United States Colored Troops. / General Orders No.1. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1 1863. With this Executive Order. He took a decisive stand on the most contentious issue in American history redefined the Union's goals and strategy and sounded the death knell for slavery. / Lincoln had always believed slavery to be immoral and fought its expansion. The President took the action "sincerely believed to be an act of justice" knowing that it might cost him the election. / With the Emancipation Proclamation Lincoln dramatically tied the Union's war aims to ending slavery. Whether they approved or not after January 1 1863 Americans could no longer deny that emancipation was central to the Union war effort. / Though ready to lay the groundwork for emancipation Lincoln feared that delivering the Proclamation at the wrong time would doom its chances for public acceptance and harm the Union cause. / On September 22 1862 Lincoln issued his preliminary Emancipation Proclamation giving the South 100 days to end the rebellion or face losing their slaves. / His final Proclamation on January 1 1863 further demonstrated his own evolving views by eliminating earlier references to colonizing freed blacks and compensating slave-owners for voluntary emancipation. Lincoln also added provisions for black military enlistment. Pausing before he signed the final Proclamation Lincoln reportedly said: "I NEVER IN MY LIFE FELT MORE CERTAIN THAT I WAS DOING RIGHT THAN I DO IN SIGNING THIS PAPER." Despite the political risks by 1864 he insisted on both reunion and emancipation as preconditions to any peace negotiation.
