The nineteenth century saw major advances in educational opportunities for women and girls. In the 1800s women began to play central roles in education - as teachers and as learners-- and literacy among women doubled between 1780 and 1840. However American higher education remained a virtually all-male affair until after the Civil War in the 1860's. Shelfwear. Dampstain to upper right edge of cover and pages.
