Originally published in a black-and-white edition in 1994 "The Gettysburg Address" is now available in a full-color edition complete with Finks original illustrations and hand-lettering. Includes quotes by Carl Sandberg Benjamin Harrison Elihu Washburne Ralph Waldo Emerson and Walt Whitman among others. Sam Fink May 27 1916 November 1 2011 was an American calligrapher. He created illustrated and inscribed editions of various historically significant American documents. His book The Constitution of the United States of America was well received. The art from the book was displayed at a courthouse in Pennsylvania. The opening of this showing at the courthouse was broadcast on the international news channel CNN. Fink released an illustrated version of the Book of Exodus hand lettered in English and Hebrew in September 2007 published by Welcome Books. Fink was an artist of inimitable range who first learned to hand-letter from his father. After marrying his wife Adele they raised two sons while he studied at the National Academy and the Art Students' League. For two decades Fink worked as an art director at Young & Rubicam. Later he taught at Pratt Institute and made professional contributions to the Lands End catalog. For more than 20 years Fink educated and entertained adults and children with his illustrated texts of American history. Chadwin Mark Lincoln
The Warhawks: American Interventionists Before Pearl Harbor
New York: W. W. Norton & Company Inc 1970. Presumed first paperback edition. First printing stated. Trade paperback. Very good. Previous owners initials on fep. Cover has some wear and soiling. Glued binding. 310 p. Bibliography. Index. From an on-line obituary: "Earlier in his career Dr. Chadwin studied at Columbia University and as part of his graduate work wrote a doctoral dissertation about the Century Group later known as the Fight For Freedom Committee which tried to move the United States to enter the Second World War before Pearl Harbor. That dissertation eventually became The Hawks of World War II University of North Carolina Press: Chapel Hill 1968 the first book-length treatment of American interventionists before the Second World War. That book was later published in paperback as The Warhawks: American Interventionists Before Pearl Harbor Norton: New York 1970. Based on citations and references that book remains important in understanding that period of American history. After completing his Ph.D. Dr. Chadwin worked as an assistant to W. Averell Harriman for about six years serving as a speechwriter and oral historian for Harriman during the period when Harriman was a key adviser on foreign policy to President Johnson and the Democratic Party. Much of his work during this period is available in the Library of Congress as part of Harriman s papers and the interviews have been frequently used by other biographers and historians. Dr. Chadwin went on to work as National Security Adviser to Senator Birch E. Bayh Jr. Democrat of Indiana. When Bayh decided not to seek the Democratic nomination for president after his wife was diagnosed with cancer Dr. Chadwin moved on to become Executive Director of the Illinois Economic and Fiscal Commission. In that position he was responsible for redefining an element of the role of the state legislature. He created the concept of legislative program evaluation now a huge area of legislative activity nationwide. In 1974 he was co-founder of the Legislative Program Evaluation Section of the National Conference of State Legislatures. Much of his specific work in the area of work-incentive programs during that era as well as work he did as a senior research associate at The Urban Institute from 1976 to 1980 shaped welfare reform during the Reagan and Clinton areas." They who knew and loved her as the light-hearted school girl hardly realized the strength of character which was growing up under an exterior peculiarly delicate and gentle. But her sickness developed it all; and they who were her seniors in age and over which the severer discipline of life had passed went to her room not as we usually go to the sick chamber to comfort the suffering body and strengthen the fainting spirit but to be themselves refreshed and strengthened by the faith and piety and patience which there shone so conspicuously."
