Tipped to inner flyleaf of first volume is a meaty Typed Letter Signed from Fehrenbacher 1p 7 3/4" X 11" Stanford CA 6 January 1980. Addressed to "Ralph" Ralph G. Newman 1912-2000 founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Near fine. On "Stanford University" letterhead Fehrenbacher sends this old friend "Thanks for your generous and interesting letter about 'The Minor Affair.' I had a great deal of fun working on the subject which I first worked on as a graduate student at the University of Chicago in the very early 1950's. At that time my only manuscript resource was the Barton papers but I also interviewed Paul Angle about the affair." The Minor Affair" was a lecture Fehrenbacher gave exploring the Ann Rutledge legend as the Second Annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture at the Louis A. Warren Lincoln Library and Museum in Fort Wayne Indiana. He then chats in great detail about Rutledge forgeries and other fascinating details about the whole affair. Signed boldly in full in black ballpoint at the close. Don E. Fehrenbacher 1920-97 was a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and scholar on Lincoln and slavery. The Library of America hardcover

Howe Harry E. Pratt Edgar DeWitt Jones and Ralph G. Lindstrom -- and the choice autograph addition to this copy consist of a Typed Letter Signed from Lindstrom tipped to the front flyleaf 1p 8�" X 11" Los Angeles CA 14 December 1945. Addressed to future note Lincoln scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. On his law firm letterhead Lindstrom and Bartlett Lindstrom thanks this WW2 veteran and remarks "What am I thinking particularly at the minute of the fine work you fellows have done in the Services Well enclosed is an advance copy of an article not present I am submitting for publication." He asks Gates to give his regards to "Schaeffer" no doubt noted Lincoln collector Carl W. Schaefer and "hopes to ear that there is a 'Mrs.' Gates." Signed as usual with his huge stylized illegible "Ralph" in blue ink. Sequel to an identically-titled volume of 1936 containing ten essays this 1945 text is fairly uncommon especially with a contributor letter. "386" inkstamped in red on rear inner flyleaf suggests a limitation number although no edition statement appears; some suggest 500 copies were printed. Lindstrom was a noted Los Angeles attorney Illinois born 1891 remembered for many texts on Lincoln and religion. J. Henri Ripstra hardcover

Faintest of faint edgewear. A tight and attractive first edition of this Modern Library Giant #20 with "First Modern Library Giant Edition 1942" clearly noted. This sharp copy also bears a fine autograph edition: Tipped among the preliminary leaves is an outstanding content Typed Letter Signed from Nevins 1p 5�" X 8" New York NY 1956 October 21. Addressed to "Ralph" Ralph G. Newman 1912-2000 founder of Chicago's famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Writing on "Columbia University" letterhead Nevins first discusses Bruce Catton's book "This Hallowed Ground: The Story of the Union Side of the Civil War." He writes: "Here we are. Bruce has written a fine book. It will delight everybody. It reads at times as if he had written in haste but I did not mention that. Some of the omissions are rather startling. But as a whole it is a superb performance." He then discusses Newman and Otto Eisenschiml's 1947 book "The American Iliad: The Epic Story of the Civil War as Narrated by Eyewitnesses and Contemporaries" an anthology that had just been rereleased by Grosset & Dunlap with a "Pictorial Chronicle" volume added by E.B. "Pete" Long. He writes "My congratulations on those two volumes of yours and Pete Long's. They are magnificent. You will have a very large sale. I agree that in time the second volume should be enlarged. It is fine as it stands but expansion would make it still finer. The whole set is a real public service." First only edition of this superb facsimile of the priceless copy bearing Lincoln's margin corrections donated to the Library of Congress by Alfred Whital Stern. In 1953 Stern donated about 7000 Lincoln items to the Library of Congress -- one of their major Lincoln acquisitions. Tipped before the front flyleaf is a special sheet signed by both Stern with his usual enormous 7" signature and below that by Library of Congress manuscripts curator Mearns with his usual tight 2" signature. This sheet was signed exclusively for Ralph G. Newman founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. This particular signed leaf also bears at top the special "Rare Book Collection / Alfred Whital Stern / Collection of / Lincolniana" Library of Congress bookplate. An outstanding copy -- tight 'n' bright. Stern 1881-1960 was a wealthy businessman and Lincoln collector extraordinaire; Mearns 1899-1981 was the noted Chief of the Manuscript Division at the Library of Congress for many years a well-known Lincoln scholar who edited "The Lincoln Papers" 1948 "Three Presidents and Their Books" 1955 and "Largely Lincoln" 1961 among others.
