Volume 3 of the THE JOURNALS OF THE LEWIS & CLARK EXPEDITION August 25 1804 - April 6 1805 which covers the expedition's route from the Vermillion River in present South Dakota to Fort Mandan in present North Dakota and their Winter encampment there. It describes encounters with Native Peoples and includes considerable ethnographic material on these tribes. Some miscellaneous documents containing information gathered during the first year of the expedition originally published separately are here brought together in proper chronological sequence with a large section over 570 pages entitled Fort Mandan Miscellany found at rear of this edition.
