Includes substantial if not entirely complete portions of Whitman's lecture on Lincoln at Steck Hall in New York. Uncommon in any condidtion. One of Whitman's most important speeches the first paragraph of the article states "The poet Walt Whitman made his beginning as a lecturer Monday night at Steck Hall in Fourteenth Street. The subject was the death of Abraham Lincoln. He reads from notes sitting in a chair since he is much disabled from paralysis. He desires engagements as a reader of his own poems and a lecturer." A transcription of the lecture thus follows and runs to two and a half long columns. This is the original of Whitman's famous essay on Lincoln's death often anthologized a remarkable Whitman item. .
