He was with the Archaeological Dept of the Nat'l Instutite of Washington D.C. and trying to locate a certain George Hall of the New York Museum of Natural History. Bachelor and old salt hayseed Captain Elisha Warren is the town's jovial social community leader being "a selectman and director in the bank and trustee of the church" and is admired by all for his earthy salty too joi de vivre with marked generosity integrity and sound judgement. As the draw of the luck in families the Cap'n had a younger brother whose fortunes differed greatly from his. The brother was schooled and rose to be a New York financier of considerable stature. The Cap'n says his brother "got the frostin' on the cake and I got the burnt part next to the pan. He went to college and I went to sea" and he married "one of them fashionable women" Boston newspapers wrote about "givin' parties at Newport and one thing a'nother." That's the way it was. The Cap'n was "satisfied with his life and always have been" and of his brother adds "I sp'iled him as much as anybody." At any rate the two have had not been in touch for 18 years. The sister-in-law was long dead and now so too the brother but not before drawing a will entrusting Cap'n Warren the final stage of the rearing of his two children . Caroline and Stephen both attending Yale. The Cap'n aware of his legal right of refusal ponders "When I'm caught in a clove hitch I have to . think myself out of it" and decides to visit New York to "look things over." A charmer from Joseph Crosby Lincoln 1870-1944 set in Bayport where we met Cap'n Cyrus Whittaker of Cy Whittaker's Place 1908 at a time when Boston was exhibiting "fresh" works of John Singer Sargeant already of international fame; Europe was in turmoil and in response Bayport residents turned from inward concerns. This story a first person narrative is structured around an autobiography by Hosea Kent Knowles --- a 38 year old bachelor and popular fiction writer born and bred in Bayport who is suffering from writer's block. To his face he is called "Hosy" by housekeeper "Hephzy" Hephzibah and "Kent" by others but was called "Quahaug" behind his back. Now a quahaug also quahog is very very common American clam known to lead such a solitary existence as to keep its shell tightly shut; in a way this book is a search for what the word means and applied. At any rate unable to write slushy romances of "dukes and . earls and . titled ladies" who he really knew nothing about Hosy/Kent/Quahaug tries writing about himself a subject he presumably does know and begins to have a good look at Bayport. Things happen dust rises and re-settles perhaps in different piles only to be kicked up afresh. All said and done wise Hephzy philosophically concludes "We're all quahaugs . That's the trouble with all the folks of all the nations; they stay in their shells and they don't try to understand their neighbors .
