Independent 1893. First hand account of the assasination of Lincoln by Lincoln's Registrar of the Treasury. Chittenden begin's "I once thought that nothing could induce me to recall the events of the 16th of April 1865." He then explains how he received a letter from another witness to these events this letter is included with Chittenden's comments and how he was able to read of these events and take some benefit from the recollection. Complete original disbound issue of Harper's Weekly published just prior to the Republican Convention in Chicago on May 16th that of course nominated Abraham Lincoln for his first term as President. The centerfold illustration approx. 16" x 22" pictures the eleven candidates from photographs by Matthew Brady. This illustration is followed by brief biographies of ten of the eleven candidates a biography of Cassius M. Clay is not included. Also included in this issue is a full-page panoramic view of Chicago. This copy is in near fine condition with some brief foxing. a short 2" closed tear on the front panel and minor edgewear. This proclamation by Lincoln called for the summoning of "the militia of the several States of the Union to the aggregate number of seventy-five thousand in order to suppress" the confederate states. Lincoln's proclamation also call the Congress back into special session.
