ill., br. Le Nord del Cervino, delle Grandes Jorasses e dell'Eiger, tetre e smisurate, sono gli obiettivi chiave su cui si concentra l'alpinismo degli anni trenta. L'idea degli "ultimi tre problemi" nasce tra gli arrampicatori bavaresi della Scuola di Monaco e nella cerchia dei colleghi austriaci che, dalla metà degli anni venti, sperimentano la nuova scala delle difficoltà in sei gradi sulle pareti del Kaisergebirge, del Karwendel e delle Dolomiti. In questo clima di strenua competizione si fa le ossa la giovane guida Heckmair. Traversando le Alpi in bicicletta, insegue da un anno all'altro l'obiettivo delle Jorasses. Quando sfuma, si getta sulla Nord dell'Eiger e, nel 1938, dopo anni di assedio costati la vita a ben nove alpinisti, riesce infine a "risolvere il problema".
