ill., ril. Ueli Steck, soprannominato «Swiss machine», è morto in Himalaya il 30 aprile 2017 all'età di quarantun anni. Fuoriclasse dell'alpinismo contemporaneo, fatto di velocità e free soloing, si stava allenando per compiere la traversata Everest-Lhotse, da solo e nel più puro stile alpino. Ogni sua impresa era preceduta da una preparazione meticolosa, e niente lasciava Ueli Steck soddisfatto come l'aver saputo valutare al meglio il pericolo. Quando il 17 novembre 2015 stabilì un incredibile record di velocità salendo la Nord dell'Eiger in due ore e ventidue minuti, disse che più del record era felice per non essersi mai «trovato in situazioni di rischio». Ma Steck era anche consapevole del fatto che «non importa quanto si è preparati, quando si va in montagna c'è sempre la possibilità che succeda qualcosa, e forse è proprio questo aspetto che rende l'alpinismo tanto affascinante». Nel "Passo successivo", Steck riflette con straordinaria onestà intellettuale sulle ragioni profonde che lo hanno portato a tentare avventure «impossibili», come la salita in ventotto ore della parete Sud dell'Annapurna, e alle sensazioni che hanno seguito il suo successo: euforia, certamente, ma anche un senso di vuoto, di solitudine, di paura a posteriori. Emozioni che però ha sempre superato per andare incontro a nuove sfide. Perché questa era la sua passione e la sua natura. E per questo sarà ricordato.

Sir Leslie STEPHEN è stato un critico letterario, filosofo e alpinista britannico, padre di Vanessa Bell e Virginia Woolf, fratello del giurista e politologo James Fitzjames Stephen. Fu tra i maggiori rappresentanti dell'età d'oro dell'alpinismo e tra i fondatori dell'Alpine Club (1857), di cui per alcuni anni fu anche il presidente dal 1865 al 1868. Fu editore dell'Alpine Journal dal 1868 al 1871 ed il primo a scalare molte grandi vette, generalmente in compagnia della sua guida favorita, lo svizzero Melchior Anderegg.
