‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph letter signed (ALS) sent to Darülbedayi actor Behzad Bey [Haki Butak]. 21,514 cm. In Ottoman script. 1 p. Five lines. The Darülbedayi was an Ottoman imperial theatre established in Istanbul in 1914. Its history was closely linked to that of its director, the actor Muhsin Ertugrul. On 31 March 1920, the second regulation prepared by the Municipality has thirty-three articles, and with this regulation, Dârülbedayi became a theater that only gave representations. Upon the disagreement between the artists and the board, a significant number of the artists separated and established a private theater (The New Stage). The work of this group did not last long, and when the founder Ismail Faik Bey went bankrupt, the group fell apart. (Source: Tiyatromüzesi [i.e. Turkish Theater Museum]). ‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original three autograph letters. 1+1+1 p. 'Ismail Pirge Biçak, Destere ve Tarak Imal ve Satis Yeri' letterhead. Signed by Ismail Pirge, who was the most important Turkish knife and pocketknife craftsman and manufacturer in Bursa city, third of six generations. They are two kind request letters. Written to Osman Bey. Dated 1948. In Ottoman script. One is written by a pencil, another is by a fountain pen with a black ink. Between the years 1877-1878 the Ottoman - Russian War (93 Harbi) after the Turks from the Balkans migrated to Anatolia, there was also a knife master Ismail Bey. In 1879, he started to work in Yahya Usta's shop (Yesilyayla Biçakçisi) in Okçular Çarsisi (one of famous bazaar which means 'Archery Bazaar' in Bursa city which still has touristic crafts) and started to produce knives and agricultural tools. When he died at a young age in 1885, his son Mehmet (Pirge) continued to do the affairs of Ismail Usta. The art of knives was thus passed on from father to son. In 1934, Mehmet Bey received the surname "Pirge" with Turkish Surname Law which means 'master who trained masters'. Ismail Pirge was son of Mehmet Pirge. At Okçular Bazaar, he and his craftsmen produced knives and accelerated trade with manufacturing. Thus, he began sending his products to a large part of Turkey, Iraq and Egypt in the 1970s. These autograph letters shed light on early history of this art comes from Ottoman tradition.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter signed 'President Ismet' and by president of 'Cemiyet-i Tedrisiye-i Islamiye'. 4to. (32 x 21 cm). In Ottoman script. 1 p. Dated July, 28, 1927. It's written from Bursa city. Letterhead of Turkish Presidency. Inönü was a Turkish general and statesman, who served as the second President of Turkey from 10 November 1938 to 27 May 1950, when his Republican People's Party was defeated in Turkey's second free elections. He also served as the first Chief of the General Staff from 1922 to 1924, and as the first Prime Minister after the declaration of the Republic, serving three terms: from 1923 to 1924, 1925 to 1937, and 1961 to 1965. As President, he was granted the official title of "Millî Sef" (i.e. National Chief). When the 1934 Surname Law was adopted, Mustafa Kemal gave him a surname taken from Inönü, where he commanded the forces of Army of Grand National Assembly as the Minister of the Chief of the General Staff (Erkân-i Harbiye-i Umumiye Reis Vekili) during the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922. Afterwards these battles became to be known as the First Battle of Inönü and Second Battle of Inönü. Ismet graduated from the Imperial School of Military Engineering (Mühendishane-i Berrî-i Hümâyûn) in 1903 as gunnery officer, and received his first military assignment in the Ottoman Army. He joined the Committee of Union and Progress. He won his first military victories by suppressing two major revolts against the struggling Ottoman Empire, first in Rumelia and later in Yemen, whose leader was Yahya Muhammad Hamid ed-Din. He served as a military officer during the Balkan Wars on the Ottoman-Bulgarian front. During World War I, he served with the Ottoman military rank of Miralay (arbitrarily the equivalent of Colonel or Senior Colonel (Brigadier)) and worked under Mustafa Kemal Pasha during his assignments at the Caucasus and Palestine fronts. During the war, on 13 April 1916, Ismet married Mevhibe, who was a daughter of an Ashraf (Esraf) of Zistovi (present day Svishtov) Zühtü Efendi. They had three children: Ömer, Erdal and Özden (married to Metin Toker). After losing the Battle of Megiddo against General Edmund Allenby during the last days of World War I, he went to Constantinople (Istanbul) and was assigned Undersecretary of the Ministry of War and then General Secretary of the Documentation in the Military Council. After the military occupation of Constantinople on 16 March 1920, he decided to pass to Anatolia to join the Turkish National Movement. He and his chief of staff Major Saffet (Arikan) wore soldier uniform and left Maltepe in the evening of 19 March 1920 and arrived at Ankara on 9 April 1920... (Source: Wikipedia). ‎Ce premier volume consacre aux bibles hebraiques conservees a la Bibliotheque nationale de France presente trente-deux manuscrits : dix-sept ont ete produits dans la peninsule iberique, sept dans l?aire ashkenaze, et un en Italie. La diversite de ces provenances favorise la comparaison des modes de fabrication, de copie et d?illustration des bibles hebraiques en Europe occidentale, durant le Moyen age. En effet, ces techniques ont ete influencees par le contact avec les cultures arabe et chretienne. Dans les bibles iberiques, des listes massoretiques sont copiees en debut et en fin de volume, quelquefois aussi a la fin du Pentateuque et moins souvent, a la fin des prophetes. Dans quelques bibles luxueuses, deux pages enluminees, formant une meme unite visuelle, representent les instruments du Temple. Certaines de ces bibles comportent egalement des vignettes enluminees destinees a indiquer les pericopes dans le Pentateuque, ou des grotesques et des figures zoomorphiques dans les marges de certaines pages. Mais l?element le plus original et le plus caracteristique des bibles hebraiques medievales est la decoration en forme de micrographie, presente dans toutes les aires geographiques. Certains textes accompagnent parfois celui de la Bible ; ils illustrent les differentes modalites de son etude et de son utilisation : grammaire et massore, traductions, commentaires, calendriers et listes liturgiques. Ces textes ont ete copies en meme temps que celui de la Bible ou ajoutes par des possesseurs successifs. Signalons uniquement deux des plus belles bibles decrites dans ce volume : Hebreu 15, copie a Lisbonne peu avant l?expulsion des juifs du Portugal, en 1496, et Hebreu 21, copie a Tudele (Navarre) par Josue ibn Gaon de Soria, pour Abraham de Leria, en 1301 ou 1302. Les abondantes annotations marginales trouvees dans les marges et les feuillets de garde de ces bibles, et de quelques autres, nous aident a retracer leur histoire ; ils sont de precieux temoins de la culture hebraique medievale. ‎This publication is the fifth and final volume in the series that catalogues and illustrates all extant manuscripts of Beatus's Commentary on the Apocalypse. It is a tradition that originated in the monastery of San Toribio in the valley of Liebana, where the monk Beatus compiled his commentary on the Book of Revelation in 776 A.D., and that had its last manifestation in the stylistically exuberant manuscript in Paris, the Arroyo Beatus, produced shortly before the middle of the thirteenth century. Six illustrated Commentaries and one fragment are catalogued in the present volume. The spectacular Rylands Beatus in Manchester, dated around 1175 and the Las Huelgas Beatus in New York, made some fifty years later, contain the most complete cycles of illustrations, and both also have links with the Castilian capital of Burgos. The Cardena Beatus, which has a more complex origin, is now divided between four different collections, though a major part of the manuscript is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Also catalogued is the sophisticated Romanesque Beatus of Navarre in Paris, as well as the only Commentary produced in Portugal ? the Lorvao Beatus now in Lisbon. The fragment also included here, consisting of a single folio plus part of another, found its way from Medina de Rioseco to Mexico in the 16th century, and by chance contained illustrations that allowed it to be identified as part of a Beatus Commentary of the early thirteenth century. In addition to the author?s Introduction and detailed catalogue, the volume includes a corpus of more than 500 illustrations. As in the catalogues of earlier periods, all inscriptions contained in the manuscripts have been transcribed, and an overview of apocalypse subjects illustrated in all 26 surviving manuscripts can be seen on the clearly presented Table. Cependant l'ensemble conserve est remarquablement restreint si l'on considere l'importance de la population juive dans la peninsule iberique durant les dix siecles du Moyen Age (jusqu'aux expulsions de 1492 et 1496) : il ne compte que 221 pierres. L'introduction rappelle la documentation sur les necropoles juives et etudie l'evolution morphologique des pierres. Le catalogue des inscriptions est particulierement detaille : la notice commence par replacer chaque pierre dans son contexte archeologique et historique. Vient ensuite une description materielle et paleographique la plus complete possible. Le texte hebreu est suivi de sa traduction, puis de l'analyse et de la discussion du texte ligne a ligne, et d'une bibliographie generale. La photographie de la pierre et de l'inscription (accompagnee d'une echelle) aura une qualite suffisante pour que l'ecriture sur pierre complete desormais la documentation de la paleographie hebraique medievale, en lui apportant des exemples bien situes dans le temps et le lieu. ‎Du milieu du VIIIe s. a 1536, date de la dissolution des monasteres anglais par Henry VIII, diverses eglises d?Europe occidentale (principalement de Benedictins et de chanoines) eurent coutume de solliciter des prieres pour un/des membre(s) defunt(s) de leur communaute au moyen de brefs ou de rouleaux mortuaires, transmis par des brevigeruli (ou porte-rouleaux). Les brefs mortuaires, reduits souvent a des languettes de parchemin, ecrits en nombre, etaient laisses aux eglises visitees. Quant aux rouleaux mortuaires, ils etaient constitues d?un nombre variable de feuilles de parchemin (le tout pouvant atteindre 30 m de long) ; chacun d?entre eux debutait par un faire-part de deces (ou encyclique) ; a tour de role, les eglises visitees par le porte-rouleau apposaient un accuse de reception (ou titre) ; frequemment, ils etaient opisthographes, c?est a dire ecrits sur les deux faces. L?encyclique peut etre precedee, a partir du XIIIe s., d?une peinture ou de dessins (souvent d?excellente qualite) et suivie, a compter du XIVe s., d?une liste des confraternites conclues par l?eglise expeditrice (sorte de liste-programme pour le porte-rouleau). Si la plupart des brefs mortuaires ont disparu en raison de leur petite taille, les rouleaux des morts ont eux-memes beaucoup souffert au cours des ages, nombre d?entre eux ayant meme ete depeces pour servir de feuilles de garde a des mss. Au total, on ne conserve (en original, par des copies ou des editions anciennes) qu?environ 450 pieces, alors que certainement des milliers ont circule. Les plus anciens originaux connus sont des fragments de la seconde moitie du Xe s. Plusieurs criteres ont prevalu pour le choix des quelque 110 planches presentees. Tout d?abord, bien sur, un critere paleographique, car l?ensemble des ecritures est date et localise avec precision, ou du moins datable avec une fourchette chronologique etroite. On trouvera dans ce volume des ecritures livresques, des mentions avec lettres enclavees (a rapprocher de celles des pages-titres des mss. ou des inscriptions lapidaires) comme des ecritures cursives ou personnelles ; les pieces retenues ont les origines les plus diverses, francaises, anglaises, belges, hollandaises, allemandes, etc. Ensuite, un critere historique : une copie du debut du XIXe s. temoigne de la mise en circulation de rouleaux mortuaires par l?abbaye de Ripoll, malheureusement incendiee peu apres ; ou encore un titre de Noyon montre l?aprete des luttes intercommunautaires a propos des reliques. Egalement, un interet documentaire, comme la charte scellee, tenant lieu de ? rotulus ? , de l?abbesse de Pielenhofen (Baviere ; 1435). Ou encore, un interet artistique avec la reproduction des magnifiques dessins ornant le debut du rouleau de Lucy de Vere, prieure de Castle Hedingham (Essex ; vers 1230) ou prepares pour le rouleau de John Islip, abbe de Westminster (vers 1532). Dans bien des cas, les itineraires peuvent etre etablis avec une grande precision : une carte retrace celui d?un rouleau mortuaire expedie en 1406 par Saint-Bavon de Gand qui, en 20 mois, recueillit plus de 800 titres d?Amsterdam au nord a Barcelone au sud. Enfin, sont reproduits divers brefs mortuaires, documents a peu pres ignores jusqu?alors. Languages : French, Latin.‎

‎A prized possession of the Cistercian convent of Marienbrunn in Rulle near Osnabruck in northern Germany was its richly illuminated gradual dating to c. 1300, which is of great significance in the history of medieval art for several reasons. With 52 historiated initials iconographically complex in their literary quotations from the liturgy, the manuscript ranks as one of the most lavishly decorated books of its type to survive. Painted in an elegant courtly Gothic style, it is ascribed in a prefatory inscription to the nun Gisela von Kerssenbrock, who wrote, notated, and decorated the manuscript "with golden letters and beautiful images." Such an encyclopedic listing of a scribe-artist's labors is unparalleled in medieval scribal colophons. The high quality of the miniatures ranks her among the most gifted women artists of the Middle Ages. Gisela is depicted in two self-portraits within the manuscript, in one of which she is leading the nuns of Rulle in singing the Christmas hymn, visual evidence that she was the choirmistress at this convent. The manuscript's images reflect the intellectual ambience of encloistered nuns who were steeped in the annual liturgical cycle of feasts with its associated bible readings, theological commentary, sermons, music, dramatic ritual, and artistic decoration. As it was used in the nuns' daily celebration of the mass, the book is an eloquent witness of the communal religious life of medieval women rather than their private meditations or mystical experiences.This study explores the imagery and texts associated with major feasts of the liturgical year and the novel ways in which music and text are woven into the artistic program of Gisela's manuscript. In particular, her book shows the seminal importance of the Easter celebration for convent life, as well over half of its illustrations are clustered in the Easter season; and the manuscript repeatedly gives artistic expression to the nuns' hopes of heaven.
