[Tibet].
The Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines. Tibet, 13th century CE.
20 x 65 cm. 314 sheets of heavy, multi-layered paper stained in blue over the whole area, varnished on the writing space, surrounded by a frame, within which are written 8 lines of approximately 80 characters in Tibetan uchen (dbu-can) script using gold ink. Each leaf written on both sides. Upper cover from another manuscript, in black ink; beneath a flap are 2 lines of very large script with the words "in the language of India". The first leaves of the manuscript contain 4, 5, 6 and 7 lines of script. Text is complete. A canonical Buddhist sutra and the central text of the Mahayana Prajnaparamita school. The present text is a Tibetan translation from the original Sanskrit, of which there are also Chinese, Korean, and Japanese translations. The "Perfection of Wisdom" sutra exists in a range of shorter and longer recensions, of which that in 8,000 lines is regarded as having been the source, since according to Buddhist belief, its precursor, no longer extant, in Buddhist Prakrit, the vernacular language actually spoken by the Buddha, transmitted the actual spoken words of the Buddha. This Sanskrit text was then expanded into versions in 10,000, 18,000, 25,000, and 100,000 lines or verses, for the advanced adepts who could appreciate detailed commentary, and on the other hand abbreviated to versions in 2,500, 700, 500, 300, 150 and 25 lines for those of lesser understanding. Modern scholarship considers that the text was elaborated by a series of additions to a small original core, not identical to any of the later 'short' versions, over the period from 50 to 700 CE. - The first Tibetan translation was made in around 850 CE and the second in 1020 CE. By this time the text had achieved its canonical form. Further comparison with the Sanskrit original and with additional Sanskrit manuscripts led to revisions of the Tibetan translation in 1030, 1075 and 1500. The Tibetan translation achieves a high level of understanding and accuracy and has been useful to modern scholars occupied in establishing and analysing the Sanskrit text. The whole range of Tibetan versions of the sutra on the "Perfection of Wisdom" has been edited, translated and commented on by Edward Conze. - The sutra recounts a debate at Rajagriha, on the Vulture Peak, where 1,250 Buddhist monks gathered to hear the Buddha. The other main speakers are the Buddha's disciples Subhuti, who puts forward the Prajnaparamita principles, and Sariputra, who puts forward the conservative views of those monks who are unable to follow these new developments. - While there is no colophon, this manuscript was almost certainly donated or sponsored by a lay person who hoped to win merit by financing the copying of the text. This manuscript is a superb example of Tibetan uchen (dbu-can) calligraphy produced during the 13th and 14th centuries. The text shows a few archaistic orthographic characteristics, such as the presence of the da-drag (the letter 'da' as a secondary suffix for some syllables), which suggest an early date, probably 13th or 14th century. - Although the manuscript is not illustrated, it displays some of the best uchen calligraphy produced in Tibet. The gold letters are pleasingly spaced and very exactly executed on the lustrous blue ground, which represent "the clear empty space, the void from which all things arise". - Some damage to the outer corners of the upper and lower 10-20 leaves. With very early marginal patches over tears from frequent turning of the pages. - Provenance: McCarthy Collection, Hong Kong, 2010-18. Previously in a UK private collection, UK, acquired in 1999.

Wareneingangsbuch einer Fernhandelsniederlassung. Rattenberg, 1788-1807 und 1810-1824.
Folio (ca. 265 x 350 mm). Deutsche Handschrift auf Papier. 1007, (25) SS., durchschossen. Blindgepr. Halblederband der Zeit über gemusterten Deckeln. Schließbänder. Eindrucksvolles Geschäftsbuch aus der Tiroler Gemeinde Rattenberg, einst zentraler Umschlagplatz für Waren der Innschifffahrt mit Beziehungen bis in den Mittleren Osten. Die jährlich dokumentierten Warenlieferungen, darunter vornehmlich Spezereien und textile Erzeugnisse sowie Branntwein, Kaffee, Tabak und Schokolade, zeugen von florierenden Handelsbeziehungen, vorrangig mit Städten in Deutschland, Österreich und Italien. Darüber hinaus scheinen auch Prag in Böhmen und sogar das Osmanische Reich auf: so importierte man in Rattenberg etwa Güter wie Rotgarn und Safran vom Händler Berusi in Konstantinopel (S. 262). - Unter den stark frequentierten europäischen Häusern sind die Tabakfabrik Maffei in München, das Handelshaus Lödel & Merkel in Nürnberg sowie die Firma Tabiseo & Pontini in Triest zu nennen. Ferner sind regelmäßige Einkäufe bei der Haller Frühlings- und Herbstmesse sowie bei der Bartholomäusmesse in Linz verzeichnet. - Von den Wirren der Napoleonischen Kriege berichtet ein Eintrag am Ende des Jahres 1796: "Dißes Jahr war der Krieg mit die Franzoßen am allerhöchsten. Sie drangen iber Brixen bis Mittewald vor und zogen durch Pusterthall bis Leoben in Steyer Mark [...]" (S. 274). - Ab 1817 mit der Angabe "in Rattenberg" in der Kopfzeile zusätzlich zu der Devise "Soli Deo Gloria" oder "Mit Gott". Einige leere Seiten herausgetrennt. Einband leicht berieben und etwas wurmstichtig, 2 Schließbänder nur fragmentarisch erhalten. Hinteres Innengelenk angebrochen; die erste Lage vom Block gelöst. Am Ende unten mit kleinem Wasserrand; vereinzelt etwas fleckig. - Überaus reichhaltige Quelle zum internationalen Warenverkehr dreier Jahrzehnte.

Deutsche Handschrift in brauner und rosa Tinte auf Papier. (211) SS. auf 116 Bll. Halblederband der Zeit. 8vo. Seltenes und schönes Zeugnis populärer Astrologie und Zahlenmagie im Zeitalter der Aufklärung. Auf einen kurzen "Vorbericht" zur Einführung in die Thematik und ein Anwendungsbeispiel ("Es träumt einem von Äpfeln, so wird in dem Alphabet unter Lit. A. gesucht [...]") folgt eine alphabetische Liste, die hunderten Begriffen von Aal bis Zwinger jeweils Lottozahlen von 1 bis 90 zuordnet. Eine anschließende Liste mit einem Auszug von 90 zuvor genannten Begriffen und der Wunsch "Viell-Glück" schließen diesen Teil des Werkes ab. - Es folgen kurze Abschnitte mit einem Planetenkalender, einer Erklärung der Tierkreiszeichen, einer "Regula Astrologa", einer Liste mit kabbalistischen Zahlen für die 12 Monate, sowie einer Anleitung für das "geheime Italiänische Würfelspiel" mit dazugehöriger Punktetabelle. Das Manuskript wird als Übersetzung des Werks eines Astrologen aus San Marino ausgewiesen: "Von einen wohl erfahrnen italiänischen Stern Deuter in St. Marino verfasset und aus dem Italiänischen in daß Deutsche übersetzet 1791". Tatsächlich steht das Manuskript in der Tradition des neapolitanischen Traumdeutungsbuchs "La Smorfia", abgeleitet von Morpheus, dem Gott der Träume und Interpretation, das bis heute von italienischen Lottospielern benutzt wird. Das Traumdeutungssystem zu den italienischen Lottozahlen 1-90 dürfte auf das frühe 18. Jahrhundert zurückgehen, die zugrundeliegende Zahlenmystik und Traumdivination sind freilich viel älter. In Österreich wurde die erste staatliche Lotterie 1751 unter dem Namen "Lotto di Genova" durch Maria Theresia eingeführt. - Als typische Gebrauchsliteratur sind erhaltene Exemplare von "La Smorfia" äußerst selten. Auch dem vorliegenden Manuskript ist seine langjährige Benutzung anzusehen. Beide Innendeckel sind in Blei und Tinte mit Ziffern vollgeschrieben, eine Notiz stammt aus dem Jahr 1875. - Einband stärker berieben, obere rechte Ecke fehlt, Rücken eingerissen. Innen ein durchgehender leichter Wasserfleck, fleckig und gebräunt. Stellenweise etwas verblichen. Zahlreiche Seiten an der rechten obere Ecke geknickt.

From fol. 3r onwards (to 17r), the booklet contains notes (by another hand) regarding rental receipts udring the year 1538. - Wrappers made of twice-folded grey paper; slightly smudged; exterior layer of paper damaged. Paper with watermark (scales with letter "A" above: not recorded by Briquet thus, while the letter "A" is listed (no. 7919) and confirmed for Venice, 1503.

4to (ca. 175 x 248 mm). Latin manuscript on vellum. 8½ pp. on 6 leaves (the first four numbered, the last blank). 33 lines, per extensum. Contemporary vellum binding with two later handwritten spine labels. Stored in custom-made half morocco case. The doge Foscari appoints the Venetian nobiluòmo Girolamo Lambardo for two years as provveditore (administrator) of Castrum Alesii (Alessio) in Albania. The modern-day town of Lezha or Lezhë, then an important base for the salt trade with Serbia, had been a Venetian possession since 1393 (in 1468, Skanderbeg would die and be laid to rest here). Lambardo's appointment includes a detailed list of his duties, some of which are based on instructions going back to the years 1404-27. - A wide-margined, clean manuscript. The lower corner of the lined but otherwise blank final leaf is clipped. - Provenance: front pastedown bears engraved armorial bookplate (Gelli 390, 2 or 3, fig. 646) of Amedeo Svajer (1727-91), Venetian merchant and bibliophile of German descent. After his death, parts of his library were acquired by the last doge, Lodovico Giovanni Manin (1726-1802), whose typographic bookplate is likewise present. While most of Manin's collection appears to have been transferred to the Bibliotheca civica "Vincenzo Joppi" in Udine in 1949, the present document was kept in an Austrian private collection as early as the turn of the century.

Statutes and ordinances of the Senate of Venice: legal collection, 14th-16th century, compiled under the doge Nicolò da Ponte. Venice ("data in nostro Ducali Palatio"), 11 June 1579 ("indictione septima").
4to (230 x 160 mm). Latin and Italian manuscript on vellum. 80 numbered ff., 21 lines. Headings and highlighted words in red; ruled throughout. Contemp. auburn calf, covers and spine elaborately gilt; all edges gilt; giltstamped supralibros "Iacobo Priolo" and date "MDLXXVIIII" on the covers. Wants ties. Interesting manuscript on the constitutional and legal history of the Venetian state, with many decrees regulating commerce, drafted in the age of Venice's great trade relationship with the East. The clean and well-legible manuscript, written in the classical humanist chancery style, was obviously prepared for members of the senate (signed at the end by the secretary, Giulio Zamberti, with the scribe's monogram). The decrees are arranged in chronological order, rater than by subject. The earliest dated decree is from the year 1351, but most date from the mid-16th century. The edicts regulated public life of the Venetian state, including civil servants' salaries, matters of commerce and trade, offices, criminal law, banishment, and other matters. The first leaf bears the dedication by the doge Nicolò da Ponte (in office 1578-85) to Jacopo Priuli, a member of one of the foremost modern-age families of Venetian patricians (producing two doges in the 16th century). The familiy, ennobled as early as 1297 and one of the richest in Venice, is also known for its patronage of the arts, commissioning several Tintoretto portraits. As a member of the senate, Jacopo would have been entitled to a private copy of the statues. The high quality of the binding with its rich arabesque ornamentation and wide ornamental borders on the covers reflects the importance of the patron family. - Engraved bookplate of Amadeo Svayer (Gottlieb Schweyer, 1727-91), a Venice-based German merchant and bibliophile who had assembled a huge and select library which after his death was almost entirely integrated into St Mark's library.

A unique compilation of 16th century Austrian legal texts, most of them by the lawyer and chancellor Bernhard Walther (1516-84), the "father of Austrian jurisprudence" (cf. Luschin-Ebengreuth 1896). Includes his code of procedure of Lower Austria (ordinaria and extraordinaria), of the lex familiae, an instruction for law students, the fees of the Lower Austrian chancellery, a copy of imperial privileges confirmed or newly issued by Emperor Charles V in 1522, an order by the Landmarschall of Lower Austria, Georg von Puchheim (died 1531), the rules for court hearings, including the hearing of witnesses, and regulations for procurators. Followed by 14 of Walther's famous 15 private-law treatises, omitting the one on familial trees. The treatises were edited and published by Max Rintelen in 1937, who, however, fails to note this manuscript source in his index of extant codices. - Folios 252-258 contain copies of imperial charters from 1528, 1568 and 1583, belonging to the treatise on fiefdom; folios 255-257 written by another hand. 1650 ownership by Hans Sauer v. Sauerburg, the town scribe of St. Pölten (1635-52), to flyleaf. - Binding somewhat brownstained, a little scratched. Cover warped, upper hinge starting. Paper evenly browned and brownstained throughout. Small tears to a few pages, mostly affecting the lower margins. Tear in f. 76 repaired with sealing wax. Flaws at the margins of the first page, rebacked with paper. Signs of use: some passages crossed out, old marginal annotations by another hand. Last in the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel, with his signed and stamped ownership to front pastedown, dated 1978. Not in M. Rintelen, Bernhard Walthers privatrechtliche Traktate aus dem 16. Jahrhundert (1937).

Sauberes Rechnungsbuch des Kellermeisters der Herrschaft Rauhenstein-Weikersdorf in Baden bei Wien unter der Regierung Anton I. von Doblhoff-Dier (1733-1812). In monatlich geführten "Journalen" werden der Weinkonsum der Herren und deren Bediensteten, der Weinverkauf sowie der in der Heiligen Messe verwendete Wein in Eimer, Maß und Seidel über einen Zeitraum von drei Jahren verzeichnet. - Auf jedes der drei Dezember-Journale folgt das jährlich geführte "Haubt-Buch über das bey denen hochfreyherrlich Doblhof Dierischen Herrschafften Rauchenstain und Weickerstorff geführte Keller Journal", unterzeichnet vom Kellerbesorger Franz Xaver Hueber. Die "Hauptbücher" ergänzen die vorangehenden "Journale" durch genauere Angaben, welche Menge Wein wann an wen in welchem Zusammenhang verkauft bzw. abgegeben wurde. Daraus geht hervor, dass die Doblhoff'schen Weingüter einige Wirtshäuser belieferten, darunter Christian Wallner, "Würth in Saurhof", und Sebastian Ludler, "Würth am Anger"; auch der herrschaftliche Fassbinder erhielt monatlich eine Ration, und selbst einige "alhier anwesende Wienner Mahler" wurden am 29. Mai 1772 mit Wein versorgt. Auch nach Wien, möglicherweise direkt an den Kaiserhof, lieferten die Doblhoffs ihren Wein. Ferner hatte die Herrschaft Abgaben an Stift Melk und das Kloster Klein-Mariazell sowie Almosen an Bettelorden zu leisten. Insgesamt 54 Eimer Wein scheinen in diesem Zusammenhang für das Jahr 1772 auf. - Die Herrschaft Rauhenstein-Weikersdorf, seit 1741 im Besitz der Freiherren von Doblhoff-Dier, war für ihre fortschrittliche und gewinnbringende Wirtschaftsführung bekannt. Mit ein Grund für ihren Erfolg dürften minutiös geführte Amtsbücher wie das vorliegende gewesen sein. - Einband an den Rändern etwas berieben; im Inneren ausgezeichnet erhalten. Die Journale der Monate Oktober und November 1774 herausgetrennt.

10, (4), 119, (19) pp. Deutsche Handschrift auf Papier. Heftung des 20. Jhs. 4to. Saubere Mitschrift der pathologischen Vorlesung des Veterinärmediziners Anton Hayne (1786-1853) am Wiener Tierarznei-Institut im Wintersemester 1830/31, aus der Feder seines Schülers Johann Spitzer. Der Fokus des Unterrichts lag zeitgemäß auf der Pferdeheilkunde und richtete sich vor allem an Schmiede: "Freilich ist jetzt die Thierheilkunde noch nicht auf dem Standtpunkt, das man blos von ihrem Ertrage leben kennte [...] gewenlich verbindet man die Thierheilunde mit dem Schmidthandtwerke und der Beschlagkunde" (S. 33). - Der Mitschrift vorangestellt ist ein detaillierter Bericht über die Behandlung eines Reitpferdes eines kaiserlichen Husaren-Regiments, "welches den 25 Fübruar in das k. k. Thierarzneyinstitutt gebracht [...] und unter der Leitung des Herrn Profesors von Heunie, und mir Johann Spitzer zur Inspektion anvertraut worden ist" (S. 1). Bei dem Tier wurde eine schwere Lungenentzündung diagnostiziert, womöglich dadurch ausgelöst, dass es "auf der Reutschull bis zum Schweus erhitzt worden ist, und dan vieleicht einer kalten Zugluft ausgesetzt war" (S. 5). Nach einer vierzehntägigen Therapie mit einer Arznei aus Eibisch, Kamille, Salpeter, Schwefelleber, Brechweinstein und Kampfer und mehreren Tagen hohen Fiebers genas das Tier wieder vollständig. Ferner enthält die Handschrift einige Blätter mit Rechen- und Schreibaufgaben, teils in tschechischer Sprache. - Hayne gilt mit zahlreichen Publikationen zur Pathologie, Seuchenlehre und Tierzucht sowie zu Therapeutika als Wegbereiter der wissenschaftlichen Tierheilkunde. In seinem Hauptwerk "Die Seuchen der nutzbaren Haussäugethiere" (1836) postulierte er die infektiöse Ursache des Wurffiebers bei Tieren und wies, elf Jahre vor Ignaz Semmelweis, auf die Analogie zum Kindbettfieber hin. - Vereinzelt etwas braunfleckig. Seltenes Beispiel einer ausführlichen, gut erhaltenen tiermedizinischen Vorlesungsmitschrift des frühen 19. Jahrhunderts.

[Women's Authorship] [Literary Manuscripts] Sarah Dickson Lowrie
Literary Collection of Published and Unpublished Work by the Renowned Suffragist & Author
Philadelphia 1915. Collection of a total of 285 manuscript and typescript pages of prose poetry and dramatic material written and edited by suffragist Sarah Dickson Lowrie 1870-1957. Lowrie a columnist and editor at the Philadelphia Public Ledger was also an activist. Founder of the Philadelphia Women's Committee later Chairperson of the Philadelphia League of Women Voters she used her public platform to promote equality for women and the working poor. An exceptional collection of material capturing the range of Lowrie's work as an author and editor including three genres across a period of at least 15 years. <br /> <br /> Included are:<br /> <br /> Autograph Manuscript including 5 published and unpublished works 202 pages dated 1900-1903<br /> Bound in half sheep over pebbled cloth measuring 7 x 8 inches and dated 1900-1903. The gift inscription in Lowrie's hand on the front endpaper "Mabel Norris Stewart April 1900" suggests that the notebook was a gift from her sister a major supporter of Sarah's career. Indeed the bulk of the manuscript documents Lowrie's composition and heavy revision of her story David the Hero from May 1900-August 1902 pages 1-35 59-175 with headings and notes for each section regarding dates of completion. The final entry states: "Finished these tales August 26 1902 - and dedicated them to Mary Mabel Norris Stewart with all my heart. Published Easter 1903." <br /> <br /> Interspersed within the notebook are other pieces of work by Lowrie. which appear to be unpublished. St. John of the Wilderness pages 35-56 is dated January-February 1901. The poem Away from You pages 57-58 is dated February 25 1901 and is accompanied by an original sketch. A story Peter the Fisherman pages 176-194 is dated August 25 1903. And the final piece dated November 25 1903 is on the death of her father pages 195-202 and appears to include a family history as well as a tribute to the man. Tucked loosely within the volume is a letter to Sarah from another female author identified only as J.S.C. regarding a short story. Also loosely inserted is a 1 page Autograph Poem unsigned in Lowrie's hand with content that ties together authorship and sex: ".Take my ovary Let me go Unapproached by further woe; But if you want What matters next Take o take my Appendix." Together the group shows her writing process and her ability to work on multiple projects during a highly creative period. Further research could link together the works based on religious themes Lowrie's work in activism and journalism and her own family's history.<br /> <br /> Autograph Playscript Signed for Me-Too 16 pages dated 1915<br /> Unbound but with a contemporary straight pin holding the upper left corner. Written fully in pencil with Lowrie's notation that the play was "written on July 19th & played on August 26 1915." What appears to largely be a fair copy of the two-act play the manuscript does contain checklists and notes on the first page regarding materials and equipment needed for staging. The final page is detached and incomplete but similarly contains scratch notes for the performance. <br /> <br /> Typed Manuscript Unsigned and hand annotated for The Idol 52 pages undated<br /> Unbound with loose pages measuring 8.5 x 11 inches. A short story -- possibly authored by Lowrie but definitely edited and annotated in her hand. Here the attention to detail and hands-on approach Lowrie takes are apparent. Meticulously corrected in type and in pencil with extensive portions excised or changed the typescript has also been cut apart and pasted back together throughout. The result is mispagination and the creation of a very new version of the original story.<br /> <br /> Autograph Poem Unsigned 4 pages undated<br /> Tied with blue string at the header. Pages measuring 6.75 x 10.25 inches and cut unevenly. A largely fair copy with one correction to the final line. Lowrie here tackles the themes of war violence and pacifism asserting women's place within them. "If I had been a pacifist 2000 years ago I grant you I'd have been unique and ready for a show. For in those old bloody days men really did in truth Demand an eye for a lost eye and for a tooth a tooth.One thousand years ago indeed the world had changed in part; Men's fights were then adjusted - sometimes - by words in court.Now I've been watching how things change And how the old's reversed; I always like to look ahead instead of last be first." References to war and technology including cars suggest that the present poem post-dates WWI.<br /> <br /> Typed Playscript Unsigned for The Flower Garden 8 pages undated<br /> Unbound but with two contemporary straightpins at the upper right corner. On legal paper measuring 8.5 x 12 inches. Annotated throughout in pencil with stage directions casting notes and revised lines. A play in one act it does appear that the play was performed and the present manuscript was used in its unfolding. The rear page is annotated heavily with the names of various players almost all women. Further research could definitely be conducted on those names and on the potential performance.<br /> <br /> <br /> Research opportunities abound for scholars including but not limited to American community theater performances the history of publication in women's magazines the connection between literature and women's activism themes in a pacifist suffragist's writing methods of composition and annotation and the work of Sarah Lowrie herself. unknown

Un cuaderno en folio, integrado por 70 folios, con caligrafías diversas y anotaciones minuciosas, para todas y cada una de las propiedades de Don Sebastian de Zarate. Encuadernación en pergamino, cosido, de la época. Un documento de gran interés por reunir los pormenores de la administracion de los bienes de una familia aristocrática navarra de la primera mitad del Siglo XIX poseedora de un rico patrimonio rural, con fincas en Añorbe, en el Valdizarbe, Garinoain, Barasoain, en el Valle de la Valdorba, Orinoain, Untzue, Eslava, y Censos incluso con la Obrería de San Nicolás de Pamplona. Como "caseros" aparecen múltiples apellidos a lo largo de los más de cuarenta años de registros: Alastuey, Yoldi, Ugarte, Ciaurriz, Melida, Sadaba, Salinas, Flamarique, Irisarri, Iturriaga, Arbuniés, Gorraiz, Munarriz, Aramburu, Elizalde, y otros.
