Edited by the great 'Republican' Thomas Hollis, with additions and corrections by Joseph Robertson, this edition includes: Memoirs of the Life of Algernon Sydney; Discourses Concerning Government; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from Thurloe's State Papers; The Protector's Advice to Algernon Sydney; Letters of Algernon Sydney, taken from the Sydney papers; Letters of A. Sydney to Henry Savile, Ambassador in France; The Trial of A. Sydney; The Apology of A. Sydney in the Day of his Death; and A General view of Government in Europe. This is an important book in the history of the ideas that founded the American republic, but what is perhaps most interesting about this copy are the manuscript notes and annotations written, in a careful small hand, in America, during the Civil War (1863). A few of these struck our eye, and we're glad to reproduce a few selections here: "I have lately undertaking to read Algernon Sydney on government. There is great difference in reading a book at four and twenty and at eighty eight. As often as I have read it and fumbled it over, it now excites fresh admiration that this work has excited so little interest in the literary world. As splendid an edition of it as the art of printing can produce, as well as for the intrinsic merits of the work, as for the proof it brings of the bitter sufferings of the advocates of liberty from that time to this, and to show the slow progress of moral, philosophical, political illumination in the world, ought to now be published in America" - John Adams to Thomas Jefferson 17 September, 1823. ".the danger in America. arises from (1) the indifference of the people to the character of their deputies; (2) the disinclination of good men to go as deputies; (3) and the inclination of bad men to go as such. The rottenness of our law making bodies has reached such a point that if it shall not soon be cured it can not longer endure." - 1863. "Among the causes, which have brought the USA to their present unhappy condition, may be reckoned, as a leading one, the predominance in their councils of mere municipal lawyers. The low morals and the crass ignorance (of these) are not equal to the work of government, filched by them from a blindly confiding people. A profession proverbially selfish and dishonest can not produce statesmen, however fecund it may be of politicians. The conduct of government is the work of statesmen - of unselfish, honest, high-hearted, great-minded men = that class has disappeared and has given way to small country lawyers whose minds exercise only upon petty squabbles of the neighborhood, incapable of grasping the vast concerns of a nation. Bad as this is, there is something worse. and that is that the profession of the law is every year sinking lower in ignorance and in contempt, while at the same time it is rising in power." - 1863. Autograph letter signed 'Sükriye', telling her trip in Yalova city with her father Cafer Fahri Bey, Celal Sofu, Refet Pasha and Fazil Bey, sent to Turkish paintress Fatma Tiraje Dikmen, (1925-2014).
Very Good Turkish Original manuscript autograph letter signed by Turkish female painter Sükriye Dikmen, addressed to her sister Tiraje Dikmen who was a painter as well. On a paper with letterhead 'Molvan Müesseseleri Termal Otel in Yalova' and watermarked 'Extra Strong'. 2 p. She mentions a trip to Yalova and its villages with her father Cafer Fahri Bey, Celal Sofu (Melek Celal Lampe's husband), Refet Pasha, Fazil Bey, and what a clever man Refet Pasha is when he speaks especially (like a devil!). She wants a corset from her sister. Sükriye Dikmen was a Turkish female painter who is known for her portraits of women and young girls. She was born in Istanbul in 1918. Her father was Cafer Fahri Bey of Batum, a scientist of the Republican era. She is the older sister of painter Tiraje Dikmen, and the nephew of Ali Dikmen, a member of the Ottoman parliament Meclis-i Mebusan, and later a member of the Grand National Assembly. Dikmen received her pre-university education at the Robert College in Arnavutköy finishing in 1942. Six years later in 1948, she completed her education at the Painting Department of the State Academy of Fine Arts Istanbul, and then went to Paris, France. In 1953, she graduated from the Art history Department of the Ecole du Louvre in Paris and worked three years with Fernand Léger and two years with Sengier Chastel and Roger Chastel. In 1953, she opened her first solo exhibition, and the next year she had her first solo exhibition in Turkey. In 1957, Dikmen participated in the exhibition of a contemporary Turkish art exhibition in Edinburgh, Scotland, and then in similar exhibitions during 1962 in Paris, Brussels, and Vienna. In 1968, she organized a retrospective exhibition gathering both her old and new works.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter signed (ALS) by Ottoman princess 'Sükriye Serafeddin'. 17,5x14,5 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 1 p. [in four]. Bifolium. The letter starts with 'Huve' and it has 12 lines. She mentions a letter that was sent by this unnamed recipient to 'Serafeddin' who is probably from the Ottoman dynasty. Sükriye Sultan was an Ottoman princess, the daughter of the heir to the throne Sehzade Yusuf Izzeddin, son of Sultan Abdulaziz, and Leman Hanim. Sükriye Sultan was born on 24 February 1906 in Çamlica Palace. Her mother was Leman Hanim. She was the second child, and eldest daughter born to her father and the eldest child of her mother. She had two younger siblings, a brother, Sehzade Mehmed Nizameddin, two years younger than her, and a sister, Mihrisah Sultan, ten years younger than her. She was the granddaughter of Abdulaziz and Dürrünev Kadin.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter. 3 p. No letterhead on paper neither on envelope. In Ottoman script. Stamped envelope. It's written on envelope: "Istanbul'da (Bayezid) [?] (Mercan)'da Muradiye Sokagindaki [.] Ibnülemin Mahmud Kemal Inal Beyefendiye...". Starts as 'Birader kemalâtperverim...' [= My brother virtuous!]. It is a poetic style of Nazif. Signed as 'Süleyman Nazif'. Dated 29 Eylül 1932, Nisantasi. Nazif was an eminent Ottoman-born Turkish poet. He mastered Arabic, Persian, and French languages and worked as a civil servant during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid II. He contributed to the literary magazine Servet-i Fünun ("Wealth of Knowledge") until it was censored by the Ottoman government in 1901. Nazif, ever critical of the European imperialist powers, attracted once more their hostility when he wrote his satirical article "Hazret-i Isa'ya açik mektup" (Open letter to Jesus) in which he described to Jesus' all the crimes that were perpetrated by his followers in his name. Two weeks later he published "The reply of Jesus" in which he, as if Jesus was talking, refuted the charges and replied that he is not responsible for the Christians' crimes. These two letters caused a furore among Christians in Turkey and Europe, putting Nazif on the verge of being put on trial. In the end this did not materialize, Nazif apologizing but being not less critical of the "Crusader mentality" of the imperialist Europeans, targeting Turkey in order to extend their power on its soil. Ibnülemin Mahmud Kemal Inal, (1871-1957) was an Ottoman-Turkish intelligent and 'the last biographer'.

C’est un livre documenté, vigoureux et qui malgré peut-être une exagération d’enthousiasme, contient et résume tout ce qu’il faut penser touchant l’auteur des Rougon-Maquart. Mais que vont penser de vous les jeunes et les vieux apaches du nationalisme qui font éructer leurs solécismes ou leurs revolvers contre la noble image de Zola ? Vous avez montré la plus haute franchise et le plus fier courage en écrivant ce bel et dense in-octavo. Les gens qui osent ce qu’ils pensent méritent dans le monde où nous vivons, d’être glorifiés sans réserve. Je vous tends les mains et me sens, une fois de plus, infiniment glorieux de me dire votre ami. Vos souvenirs sur quelques points de détail ne sont pas exacts. Par exemple, dans le dîner chez Gervaise (L’Assommoir), ce n’est pas un gigot que Poisson découpe mais une oie. Gervaise, avant de se mettre à table donne des détails sur la bête, qu’elle a achetée au marché des Poissonniers, qui pèse 12 livres, qui a déjà rendu 2 bols de graisse, etc., etc. Plus tard, dans la nuit, quand toute la tablée est soule, tandis que ronflent les ivrognes, un chat fait craquer sous ses dents fières la carcasse de l’oie. Vous voyez que je vous ai lu attentivement. Je voudrais causer avec vous. J’ai à vous demander un conseil, peut-être un service. Vous plairait-il choisir un jour où nous pourrions nous trouver dans Paris. Une lettre portant la date du deux janvier doit apporter offrir des souhaits de bonheur et de gloire. Sent from Köln, Germany. Takiyettin Mengusoglu was a Turkish philosopher. Mengusoglu was born in Malatya, Turkey. After finishing high school he went to Germany and became a student of Nicolai Hartmann. He was known as Takiyettin Temuralp at that time and published Über die grenzen der erkennbarkeit bei Husserl und Scheler in German. He is the author of the university level textbook Felsefeye Giris (Introduction to Philosophy). Mengüsoglu founded a new school of anthropology which he called ontological anthropology. This anthropology deals with the man not through any conceptualization but through "his concrete bio-psychic wholeness". He believed that this new anthropology would be more suitable for approaching man and solving concrete problems in the human world. (Wikipedia).

[Friedberg-en-Hesse], sans éditeur, pièce unique, 1915. Format oblong - 27,5 x 19 cm. Carnet relié en pleine toile beige, muni de deux lacets de fermeture. 68 pages. Emouvant et intéressant album relatif à la captivité en Allemagne, durant la Première Guerre mondiale, d'un officier français du 46e Régiment d'Infanterie, le sous-lieutenant Romain Talabot. Il contient une carte postale, 114 photographies originales, souvent légendées, et de nombreuses illustrations (principalement ornementales) offrant un aperçu, sur l'année 1915, de la vie au camp de prisonniers de Friedberg-en-Hesse.Plusieurs vues, dont certaines aériennes, montrent la configuration et de l'environnement du camp : la grande cour, les bâtiments (caserne, gymnase) et les paysages alentour (le village de Friedberg et la chaîne de moyenne montagne du Taunus). Les portraits constituent une majorité des clichés : individuels ou de groupe, ils évoquent la diversité des nationalités présentes puisque se côtoient Français, Anglais, Belges, Russes, officiers des armées coloniales..., mais également des grades, des armes (infanterie, cavalerie, etc.) ainsi que des origines géographiques et militaires (le 46e, le 147e et le 256e sont cités). Ainsi, d'après les indications de l'auteur, parmi les Français, se trouvent les "Bourguignons", les "5 Batignollais", les "Africains", ou encore un Algérien ; Belges et Russes forment des groupes tantôt à part, tantôt mêlés aux autres, et il semble régner entre ces compagnons d'infortune une certaine solidarité, voire une franche camaraderie qui transparaît dans leurs visages ou attitudes. S'ajoute la variété des confessions religieuses, auxquelles font référence les photos d'un pope russe et celles de l'abbé Noël Delattre, vicaire de Cambrai devenu aumônier catholique du camp, posant près de l'autel dans la salle de prière. Les photographies donnent ainsi à voir la réalité quotidienne d'un camp réservés aux prisonniers gradés en territoire ennemi, qui contraste avec les conditions de vie extrêmement éprouvantes des simples soldats : à Friedberg, Talabot et ses co-détenus disposent de chambres relativement spacieuses, d'une cuisine, d'un réfectoire, d'une "buvette" aux allures de café, d'un jardin potager. Bien que l'objectif de l'appareil ait capté la relève des gardes et sentinelles, de même que les survols du camp par Zeppelin et ballons dirigeables ou l'arrivage des colis - rappelant le contexte immédiat de guerre-, ce sont de nombreuses activités de loisirs qui sont ici mises en valeur : musique et chant dans une salle dédiée, sports pratiqués dans des espaces aménagés tels que le gymnase ou le court de tennis, jeux de table (bridge) ou d'extérieur, comme le traditionnel gorodky* russe, dont plusieurs images permettent d'imaginer la popularité. Enfin, les clichés documentent occasionnellement quelques épisodes sortant de l'ordinaire : le transfert des Belges à Magdebourg, l'organisation de cérémonies religieuses lors des fêtes de Jeanne d'Arc et de l'Assomption (15 août 1915), l'enterrement d'un sous-lieutenant (qui bénéficie de deux services, l'un catholique et l'autre orthodoxe, célébrés respectivement par les Français et les Russes. Quant aux illustrations, à l'exception d'une composition en pleine page pour le titre de l'album, il s'agit d'encadrements soignés, d'une grande finesse, en noir (encre) et en couleurs (aquarelle), dont on notera avec intérêt l'inspiration ambivalente, entre les arabesques et motifs floraux Art Nouveau et les lignes sobres et géométriques Art Déco. Agréable et unique recueil. * le gorodki est un jeu sportif traditionnel très populaire en Russie au XIXe siècle. Sur un terrain rectangulaire de 22 x 12 m, on délimite un carré de 2 m de côté ("gorod") où l'on dispose 5 cylindres de bois ("gorodki") selon 15 configurations imposées. Il s'agit de renverser ces "quilles", à une distance de 13, puis 6,5m, à l'aide de battes en bois, en un temps minimum et un nombre de lancers réduit.

Photo album beautifully decorated in an Art Nouveau style and revealing the day-to-day reality of a camp reserved for high-ranking prisoners in enemy territory during WWI.
[Friedberg-en-Hesse, Germany], No publisher, unique piece, 1915. Oblong format : 10.8 x 7.5 inch. Bound in full beige cloth (new), with two closing laces. 68 pages. Moving and interesting album relating to the captivity in Germany, during the First World War, of a French officer of the 46th Infantry Regiment, Second-Lieutenant Romain Talabot. It contains a postcard, 114 original photographs, often captioned, and numerous illustrations (mainly ornamental) providing a glimpse, over the course of 1915, of life in the Friedberg-en-Hesse prison camp. Several views, some of them aerial, show the layout and environment of the camp : the large courtyard, the buildings (barracks, gymnasium) and the surrounding landscape (the village of Friedberg and the Taunus mountain range). Portraits make up a majority of the shots : individual or group, they evoke the diversity of nationalities present, with French, English, Belgian, Russian and colonial army officers rubbing shoulders, as well as ranks, arms (infantry, cavalry, etc.) and geographical and military origins (the 46th, 147th and 256th are mentioned). Thus, according to the author's indications, among the French there are the “Bourguignons”, the “5 Batignollais”, the “Africans”, or even an Algerian ; Belgians and Russians form groups that are sometimes separate, sometimes mixed with the others, and there seems to be a certain solidarity among these companions in misfortune, even a frank camaraderie that shows in their faces or attitudes. Added to this, is the variety of religious denominations, alluded to by photos of a Russian pope and those of Abbé Noël Delattre, former vicar of Cambrai and then the camp's Catholic chaplain, posing by the altar in the prayer room. The photographs reveal the day-to-day reality of a camp reserved for high-ranking prisoners in enemy territory, in stark contrast to the extremely harsh living conditions of ordinary soldiers : at Friedberg, Talabot and his fellow prisoners had relatively spacious rooms, a kitchen, a refectory, a café-like “buvette” and a vegetable garden. Although the camera's lens captured the changing of the guards and sentries, as well as Zeppelin and airship overflights of the camp, or the arrival of parcels - reminiscent of the immediate wartime context - it is the many leisure activities that are highlighted here : music and singing in a dedicated room, sports practiced in equipped areas such as the gymnasium or the tennis court, table games (bridge) or outdoor games, such as the traditional Russian gorodky*, the popularity of wich is shown through several photos. Lastly, the photographs occasionally document some out-of-the-ordinary episodes : the transfer of the Belgians to Magdeburg, the organization of religious ceremonies on the feasts of Joan of Arc and the Assumption (August 15th, 1915), the burial of a second lieutenant (who had two services, one Catholic and the other Orthodox, celebrated by French and Russians officers, respectively). As for the illustrations, with the exception of a full-page composition for the album's title, they are meticulously framed, with great finesse, in black (ink) and color (watercolor). Their mixed style, between Art Nouveau arabesques or floral patterns and sober, geometric incoming Art Deco lines, will be noted with interest. A pleasant and unique collection. * gorodki is a traditional sports game that was very popular in 19th-century Russia. On a 22 x 12 m rectangular field, a 2 m square (“gorod”) is marked out and 5 wooden cylinders (“gorodki”) are arranged in 15 set configurations. The aim is to knock down these “skittles”, from a distance of 13, then 6.5 m, using wooden bats, in a minimum time and a reduced number of throws.
