‎Palimpsests are texts from which the primary text has been effaced to make room for fresh writing. The practice was particularly important in the early Middle Ages, when numerous, often precious, books were subjected to this treatment. As a result, many ancient texts lay hidden in European libraries for centuries. Ever since the first palimpsests were discovered in the seventeenth century, scholars have been fascinated by the possibility of discovering hitherto unknown texts. For a long time, the lower script of palimpsests could only be brought back to the light of day through the use of chemical reagents that proved very detrimental to the manuscripts. The great advance away from these destructive techniques came at the beginning of the twentieth century with the application of ultra-violet photography. Today, striking advances in this field are again being made with the development of digital imaging. The contributions in this volume focus mainly on the cultural evidence offered by palimpsests from the early Middle Ages. Some contributors have examined particular manuscripts in great detail (the London palimpsest of Jerome's Chronicle or the Munich palimpsest codex from Benediktbeuern); others have looked at specific types of texts that have suffered deletion in this way (liturgical palimpsests, Carolingian letters). The volume also contains a handlist of all known palimpsested manuscripts in Beneventan script. Languages: English.‎

‎Anselm and Abelard offers a wide-ranging collection of papers on two of the most well-known medieval thinkers, Anselm of Canterbury and Peter Abelard. Drawn from a conference held in Stuttgart in 2004, the sixteen papers by leading scholars in the field focus on the lives and thought of these two thinkers. The majority of the contributions expore the intellectual world of the medieval west in the century between the mid-eleventh and the mid-twelfth, a period crucial in forming intellectual frameworks that would shape subsequent western thought. The first eight papers focus on Anselm, the second eight on comparisons and contrasts with Abelard. All of Anselm's and most of Abelard's major works are examined in the course of the collection. Contributors explore key philosophical themes of thruth, original sin, logic, reason. Others tease out the often intricate networks between intellectual communities in the period to reveal fresh insights into the development of both Anselm and Abelard's thought. This includes consideration of the physical way in which Anselm's corpus was collected and preserved. Connections between literary artifice and theological observation are investigated, as are Anselm's notion of gift and western intellectual attitudes towards Jewish and Islamic thought. Outside the mid-twelfth century the use made of Anselm's thought and historical existence by thirteenth century scholars and by the post-reformation Church in england are also considered. This is an important and thought-provoking collection, which shows the continuing inspiration to be drawn from both Anselm and Abelard as well as providing a thorough investigation of the contexts in which their thought developed, evolved, was expressed ans was understood by contemporaries and subsequent generations. ‎Share/Save/Bookmark Fondee en 1113, l'abbaye parisienne de Saint-Victor s'etait dotee au cours des siecles suivants d'un important fonds de manuscrits dont un catalogue extrement detaille et remarquable pour l'epoque fut acheve en 1514 par un bibliothecaire nomme Claude de Grandrue. Une proportion exceptionnellement forte (environ 85%) des manuscrits figurant dans ce catalogue est parvenue jusqu'a nous. Pour la majeure partie d'entre eux, conservee dans le fonds latin de la Bibliotheque nationale de France, il n'existait jusqu'ici qu'un inventaire provisoire tres sommaire dresse en 1869 par Leopold Delisle. Pleinement conscient de l'insuffisance de son repertoire, celui-ci souhaitait qu'une concordance entre les cotes du XVIe siecle et les cotes modernes rendit de nouveau consultable le vieux catalogue, donnant ainsi acces aux milliers de textes contenus dans ces manuscrits. Apres cent-trente ans, ce voeu du grand erudit est ainsi realise. Le present ouvrage, en effet, est essentiellement constitue par l'edition du catalogue de Claude de Grandrue, chaque notice d'un manuscrit retrouve etant precedee non seulement de sa cote actuelle, mais aussi de la suite de toutes les cotes anterieures. La notice d'origine est souvent completee par des reparations d'omissions, des identifications de textes anonymes, des rectifications de fausses attributions ou des references bibliographiques. La notice de Claude de Grandrue est suivie d'une description du volume ou de ce qui en subsiste, la partie proprement codicologique etant, par la force des choses, assez succincte, mais la partie historique (origine, anciens possesseurs, etc.) visant a l'exhaustivite. Dans le cas des recueils heterogenes, tres nombreux a Saint-Victor, chacun des elements (certains recueils peuvent en comporter jusqu'a une vingtaine) fait l'objet d'une description separee.
