‎Cet ouvrage abondamment illustre reunit sous forme de catalogue 251 notices consacrees a des plaques de reliures dont plusieurs sont inedites et dont certaines etaient inconnues jusqu'a present. La recherche des auteurs s'est principalement portee sur les bibliotheques francaises, mais aussi sur de nombreux fonds de province et de l'etranger ainsi que sur quelques collections particulieres. Les notices, accompagnees chacune d'un frotti, sont classees suivant l'ordre alphabetique des themes decoratifs. Ce classement permet de mieux integrer les cas douteux et de constituer un instrument de recherche facile d'acces. Chaque notice comprend trois parties: identification de la plaque, liste et description des livres manuscrits ou imprimes qu'elles decorent (avec indication des possesseurs et des cotes anciens) et enfin un commentaire historique indiquant notamment les elements permettant de dater ou de localiser une plaque. Une bibliographie termine la notice. Les auteurs ont etabli les limites chronologiques de l'emploi des plaques en France depuis environ 1480 jusqu'aux annees 1535/1536 en faisant ressortir les influences venues des Pays-Bas ou ce type de decoration etait connu des le XIVe siecle. Le role de Paris est evidemment essentiel, mais d'autres centres importants ont pu etre reperes, a Lyon notamment, mais surtout en Normandie. La consultation de l'ouvrage est facilite par une table alphabetique generale et par une liste des plaques divisee en trois parties: localisations sures, localisations possibles, localisations douteuses. Vient ensuite une table par cote des livres cites. Non seulement les historiens et les historiens du livre, mais egalement les amateurs et les collectionneurs de reliures disposent desormais d'un instrument de reference qui n'est certainement pas pret d'etre remplace. ‎Discipline jeune encore, la codicologie quantitative a deja produit des resultats tres encourageants. Pourtant, de nombreux chantiers restent encore en friche. Les formules des colophons de manuscrits occidentaux, telle la celebre Detur pro penna scriptori pulchra puella, sont sans doute l'un des plus delaisses. Tant est tenace a propos de ces " ritournelles " l'idee qu'elles ne seraient que curiosites, expression toute spontanee de la gouaille des copistes au terme de leur dur labeur. Jusqu'a present, seuls quelques chercheurs en avaient devine tout l'interet pour l'archeologie du livre manuscrit. Se fondant sur les methodes de la statistique et sur l'eclairage multidisciplinaire de l'erudition, l'auteur de cet ouvrage construit l'hypothese d'une distribution spatiale et temporelle du formulaire des colophons dans tout l'espace europeen et la demontre par l'analyse systematique d'une trentaine de formules latines clairement differenciees. Bien plus, en puisant dans la paleographie et l'histoire litteraire les elements d'une vaste fresque, il etablit un lien clair entre les cycles de vie de ces formules sur quinze siecles d'histoire du livre et les grandes respirations de l'histoire culturelle de l'Occident medieval. Dans un second volume est rassemblee la documentation utilisee pour conduire cette recherche. Elle apportera aux erudits d'utiles complements d'information sur de tres nombreux colophons des editions existantes. ‎In September 2008, the seventh edition of the International Colloquium of Greek Palaeography (Madrid-Salamanca, 15-20 September 2008) celebrated the 300th anniversary of the Palaeographia graeca, the pioneer work of the Benedictine Bernard de Montfaucon that established the fundamentals of the discipline. Papers by renowned specialists in the field contributed to the methodology of study and to our knowledge of Greek manuscripts, and opened new perspectives for the study of the Greek manuscripts preserved mostly in European libraries, taking into account new methodological approaches, the possibilities of online resources, and the results of ongoing research projects. The Proceedings published here include contributions by specialists from over ten different countries, dealing with palaeographical issues such as ancient capital and lower-case lettering, writing and books in the Macedonian, Comnenian and Palaeologan periods, and Greek scribes and ateliers in the Renaissance (especially in manuscripts from the Iberian Peninsula). Many contributors also take a codicological approach and consider the material aspects of the codex, as well as other new research techniques. ‎Lux perpetua est le dernier ouvrage de Franz Cumont. Publie a titre posthume en 1949, il presente une synthese consacree aux idees des Romains de l'Empire relatives a la vie future et a l'au-dela. Ce livre montre comment, au fil des siecles, les Enfers se sont deplaces des entrailles de la terre, ou les placait la tradition litteraire grecque, vers le firmament du ciel, pour donner finalement naissance au theme de l'eschatologie celeste. L'ouvrage met en lumiere les deux tendances de la conception paienne de l'au-dela. La premiere, materialiste, illustree surtout par Virgile, est tributaire de l'orphisme-pythagorisme. La seconde, empreinte de spiritualite mystique, remonte a Platon. C'est a cette theorie qu'adherent la plupart des philosophes romains, mais aussi bon nombre d'auteurs chretiens. Cette nouvelle edition, enrichie d'une introduction historiographique, fait renaitre ce classique devenu aujourd'hui introuvable, mais qui reste, soixante ans apres, une reference. ‎La bibliotheque de l'abbaye de Clervaux possede un fonds de manuscrits plus important que ne le laisserait supposer la date de sa fondation (1890). Ces manuscrits, qui concernent pour une large part l'histoire de la Lorraine, lui viennent en grande majorite de dons, en tete desquels se detachent ceux de la famille du Coetlosquet ; quelques manuscrits anciens, d'origine italienne, s'y sont ajoutes en 1984 : ils avaient ete acquis par l'Abbaye Pontificale de Saint-Jerome, dependance romaine de l'abbaye de Clervaux. L'age des manuscrits permet de les diviser en deux sections. La premiere, celle des manuscrits anterieurs au xvie siecle (mss 1-14), meritait une analyse detaillee. La seconde, beaucoup plus nombreuse, celle des manuscrits posterieurs a 1500 (mss 16 et suivants), n'a fait l'objet que d'un inventaire succinct, publie en annexe ; cet appendice a cependant ete muni d'un index onomastique, comme ont ete munies de tables et d'index (mains, filigranes du papier, auteurs, incipit des pieces liturgiques, patronymes et toponymes, manuscrits cites) les notices detaillees de la premiere section. ‎Le manuscrit, issu de la bibliotheque ducale, fait allusion a des evenements qui se sont produits entre 1454 (date du recit du Banquet de Faisan de Lille et du "registre" des voeux prononces par le duc et les nobles) et 1463/64 (date de la Bulle de croisade de Pie II et de l'Epitre a la Maison de Bourgogne). Il a du etre etabli a ce moment, dans un contexte difficile, pour rassembler des arguments en faveur d'une croisade a laquelle Philippe le Bon etait sur le point de renoncer. Les voeux, en partie inedits, expriment un sentiment d'appartenance au monde bourguignon, une adhesion aux ideaux de l'Eglise, mais aussi une analyse realiste de la situation. Un index des "vouhans" eclaire la diversite de leurs personnalites et fait vivre un milieu. Loin d'etre consideres domme des "serments apres boire", ces voeux apparaissent, a la lumiere des textes ecclesiastiques, du poeme sur la mort qui clot le manuscrit, comme sinceres et reflechis. ‎At the court of Burgundy, Louis of Bruges was one of the most remarkable bibliophiles of the 15th century. The majority of his collection consists of secular volumes written in French. Copiously illustrated and in large format, the books often deal with classical history and chronicles, and form a homogeneous artistic corpus, created for the most part in Bruges by selected artists. This volume presents, for the first time, Louis of Bruges' corpus of manuscripts in a format that allows for comparisons with contemporary works. Introduced by a synthetic overview, the catalogue contains descriptions grouped by artist, supplemented by some 460 illustrations. French text. This third volume of the Corpus deals in detail with six manuscripts from the period around the year 1000: the Urgell Beatus; the San Millan Beatus in the Real Academia de la Historia, Madrid, which through unfinished, preserves the style of Castile and Leon in the significant period of the first millenium; the Escorial Beatus, notable for its heavy opulent frames; the Facundus Beatus, Madrid, named after the scribe and perhaps master of the Fernando and Queen Sancha of Castile; the Fanlo Beatus in New York, which survives in only few pages copied in the seventeeth century by Lastanosa, as he himself attested; and the exceptionally beautiful San Server Beatus in Paris, probably made in Gascony. All the illustrations in these manuscripts are reproduced to provide a visual conspectus of exceptional richness. Each catalogue entry discusses the location of production, the work of the outstanding - and often identifiable - illuminators and scribes, as well as the codicology. ‎The multi-volume project responds to long-standing lacunae in Old French text study and Arthurian scholarship, in that it aims to provide a linguistically and scribally authentic text of a single illustrated Arthurian manuscript; in this case, it is one that has never before been edited, collated, or translated. Since research on text, language, and manuscript may be impeded by editorial policies operative in older editions of medieval narratives and since viewing the manuscripts directly is often difficult or impossible, the editorial board set protocols for the Lancelot Prose of 229 editions that would address the need for authentic, accessible texts, packaged with ancillaries to address a variety of reading and experience levels. At the same time, the board wished to take into account the potential of electronic images to enhance scholarly work and teaching based on the editions. The idea of a strictly 'diplomatic edition' was discarded in light of digital technology's ability to provide high-resolution images of an original that are useful for close private study and public viewing. Thus each edition provides a useful, portable, authentic reading of Old French Arthurian narrative that is supported externally by online electronic images and internally by a selection of wonderful illustrations and a variety of ancillary materials and essays developed through years of study and teaching based on Yale 229. The Mort begins with the return of Bohors from the quest of the Holy Grail and narrates the declining fortunes of King Arthur and his Round Table through the dissolution of the Table and the 'death' of Arthur. The tale includes Morgain's efforts to convince Arthur of Lancelot and Guinevere's adultery, Lancelot's battle to save Guinevere from burning at the stake, the dramatic discovery of Guinevere and Lancelot by Arthur's knights, the departure of Arthur from his kingdom to fight Lancelot, and Arthur's leaving his Kingdom, the keys to his treasury, and his Queen in the hands of the treacherous Mordret. In the closing folios, Arthur is mortally wounded by Mordret at the apocalyptic Battle of Salisbury Plain, and Lancelot returns to avenge Arthur against Mordret's two sons at the final Battle of Winchester.
