Paris, Paulin
Les manuscrits francois (francais) de la Bibliotheque du Roi (catalogue raisonne of French manuscripts)
Seven volumes, complete. First and only edition of one of the great catalogues of manuscripts, Paulin Paris' thorough, accurate, and detailed catalogue raisonne of French language manuscripts in the Bibliotheque du Roi (now the Bibliotheque Nationale). In his descriptions, which average about three pages in length but which are often much longer, the author provides not only precise descriptions of over 1,000 manuscripts and their contents, but also information concerning provenance and, in many cases, lengthy quotations. An incomparable source for medieval and renaissance French culture: the manuscripts concern literature, hunting, gastronomy, and just about everything else. The vast majority of the manuscripts were unpublished when Paris compiled this catalogue, and the majority are still unpublished today. Fully indexed. Beautifully printed by Plon. This copy is on fine wove paper. 8vo. Attractively bound in cloth and marbled boards. Minimal wear to bindings, else fine and bright. An excellent set. Paulin Paris was one of the most important medievalists of the generation that included Francisque Michel, Achille Jubinal, and Le Roux de Lincy. In 1832, at the age of 32, he edited "Berte aus grans pies", the first chanson de geste (medieval French epic) published in France.

Delisle, LÈopold
Observations sur l'origine de plusieurs manuscrits de la collection de M. Barrois
3, 72 pp. Delisle, upon perusing the catalogue of Lord Ashburnham's library (compiled by none other than renowned book thief Guglielmo Libri), noticed that over thirty of the manuscripts greatly resembled codices that had disappeared from the BibliothËque ImpÈriale. Ashburnham had acquired all of those manuscripts from celebrated medievalist Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Barrois. This book provides a detailed account of each of the manuscripts, comparing various published descriptions. Delisle also tries to explain how Barrois had acquired them. A fascinating bit of detective work. Printed on fine wove paper. Large 8vo. Bound in contemporary boards. Light wear to beards, internally fine and bright. Rare.

Chadourne, Louis
La force ensevelie [bound into] Terre de Chanaan
A large-paper copy of the first edition of "Terre de Chanaan" WITH CHADOURNE'S EXTENSIVE MANUSCRIPT TREATMENT ("scÈnario") FOR "LA FORCE ENSEVELIE", an adventure novel that he apparently never completed, and that certainly was never published. ***** The book itself (312 pp) is one of 100 numbered large-paper copies printed on fine Lafuma laid paper. Bound in is the synopsis, an autograph manuscript neatly written out on 9 numbered leaves, for an adventure novel, "La force ensevelie", very much in the style of Conrad. The final leaf is signed by Chadourne. Preceding the manuscript a signed autograph letter from Chadourne to M. Malesi, director of the publishing firm "L'…dition FranÁaise IllustrÈe", in which Chadourne explains why he is submitting the treatment. Laid in is a signed autograph postcard from Chadourne to Malesi, postmarked in early 1919. This was undoubtedly Malesi¥s copy of "Terre de Chanaan", and he decided to have the manuscript of "La force ensevelie" bound in because of the similarity of the two narratives, both of which were surely composed in 1918. 8vo. Bound in decorated boards with a leather spine label. Original wraps and backstrip preserved. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Tiny traces of wear to extremities of binding, else FINE AND BRIGHT. UNIQUE AND IMPORTANT.

Jean Hugot, Jean-Baptiste Breyer, Alexandre Assier, and Michel SÈmilliard
Troyes depuis le Ve siËcle jusqu'au XVIIe
A BEAUTIFULLY-EXECUTED CONTEMPORARY CALLIGRAPHIC MANUSCRIPT COPY of this extremely rare book. 41 pp. plus etched frontispiece on Chinese paper depicting Troyes by Deseaube after Fleury, and an additional lithograph depicting the Porte Saint-Jacques, that no longer exists (the printed edition was unillustrated). Since only eight (8) copies of the book were printed, it was surely unobtainable to all but a select few--and thus somebody executed this wonderful manuscript copy on fine bluish laid paper, with huge margins. 4to. Bound in pebbled morocco-backed boards. Spine worn but structurally solid. Internally FINE AND BRIGHT.
