First edition of the literary virtuoso's first book - preceding the American edition that appeared a month later under the more common title Typee.<br /><br />Original blind-stamped and gilt-lettered cloth frontispiece map 16 pages of inserted ads at the rear dated March 1846. The name "Pomare" spelled correctly on page 19 rather than "Pomarea" - denoted by BAL as the second issue but the difference now regarded as a pre-publication state. Fore-margin of E8 very slightly torn without loss cloth trivially bumped. Lightly penciled owner inscription at the top of the title page Stephen Cracknell Nov. 1847. Patina of dustiness else a sublime Fine copy – the cloth bright and unworn pages fresh as an ocean breeze.<br />The first printing was 4048 copies of which only around 1500 were issued in cloth.<br />'Typee was originally submitted to Harper & Brothers in New York but was rejected on the grounds that it was too fantastic to be true. Melville's brother Gansevoort recently appointed Secretary of the American Legation in London took the manuscript to England and persuaded John Murray to publish it - provided that Melville supply supplemental factual material to make the story seem more realistic. Despite the addition of three chaptersXX XXI and XXVII of such material many continued to doubt Melville's veracity. Much however was eventually done to dispel such doubts at least in the United States when on July 1 1846 the Buffalo New York Commercial Advertiser published A Letter from Toby. This was an attestation by Melville's friend and fellow ship-jumper Richard Tobias Greene that the adventures related in the book were indeed true.<br />Gansevoort Melville also contacted George Putnam at the London offices of Wiley & Putnam who agreed to publish an American edition to be typeset in New York from Murray's proof sheets. Putnam's partner John Wiley was offended by many of the passages dealing with sex and religion but was unable to edit the book before it went to press; he subsequently pressured Melville to delete the controversial passages for the second edition. This "revised version" of the American edition was published in August of 1846 and included a "sequel" entitled The Story of Toby an account of Greene's adventures after he managed to escape from the island.'The Life and Works of Herman Melville<br />His genius largely overlooked during his natural life posthumous recognition would be Herman's path to immortality. <p>This is a never-read second printing of the 1982 release by Library of America of Herman Melville's 3 classics <i>Typee</i> <i>Omoo</i> and <i>Mardi</i>.</p><p>It is a plain elegant book. Navy blue covers with brilliant gold lettering on the spine.<br /></p><p>1316 pages no shelf-wear lovely paper.</p><p>There are no marks of any kind in or on it although there's a slight discoloration at the bottom of the spine. There is a book plate which you can remove although it's quite attractive.<br /></p><p><i>Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life</i> was Melville's first novel and his most popular book during his lifetime. It was published in 1946 and is based on the time he spent on Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas. It is still considered a classic in travel writing.</p><p><i>Omoo a Narrative of Adventures in the South Seas</i> was Melville's second book published in 1847. It is the sequel to <i>Typee</i>.</p><p><i>Mardi and a Voyage Thither</i> was published in 1949 and was Melville's first work of pure fiction. Original brown cloth gilt sharp usually oxidized away wear to spine tips lightly foxed else very good tolerable for this cheaply made book. Looking back to the American short story's roots there was Irving's Sketch Book 1820 the invention of the modern short story and the first American book that was a bestseller here and in Europe. Then came Poe's Tales 1845 Hawthorne's Mosses From an Old Manse 1846 and after The Piazza Tales there were Twain James Crane Bierce and O. Henry then Fitzgerald and Hemingway but this is the one book that touches them all. Its 431 pages are filled with 6 stories. The Bell Tower is a psychological gripper that's an advance of Edgar Poe. The Lightning-Rod Man is the shortest but it's of such absorbing invention and depth that it would be a career marker if credited to any other name. The Piazza the delusions of idealism and The Encantadas sketches of the Gal�pagos Islands are longer and just as fine. All 4 are half a century ahead of their time and more intricate than most novels but it is the 161 pages of Benito Cereno good versus evil and the 77 pages of Bartleby the Scrivener isolation that soar to the heights and stand tall at the pinnacle. Every word of plot theme characterization and atmosphere are fused in an unfamiliar manner that is nonetheless easily recognized as truthful seamlessly symmetrical and readily welcomed but it was all too late for Melville. By 1856 he couldn't believe what wasn't happening to him. He'd already decided that mind is to soul as wave is to ocean and unbumped by the threat of failure he wrote as brilliantly as he could for as long as someone would publish him and dismissed his editor's advice to write down to his readers and enjoy a successful commercial career Herman was a genius who never realized that money is coined liberty. But Melville's martyrdom or the ignorance of 19th century readers does not justify why in the 21st century 95 years after Melville's rediscovery this 1st edition continues to be undervalued beyond reason. In many ways it reads like it was written 62 years ago not 162 and I can cogently argue that it's American literature's finest collection of short fiction. The 1st edition which may include 3 printings was a small one 2500 copies sales were slower than bluff erosion 1051 sold the publishers Dix & Edwards went bankrupt and Melville himself was dismissed from literature a year later all these events ironically though repeatedly the journey of real art.
