Only five leaves in the book have engravings recto and verso. § First edition perfect for display or for teaching as the leaves are quite sturdy and can be carefully handled or matted for framing. Blake virtually in a frenzy completed 537 watercolor designs when he was commissioned to illustrate Young’s masterpiece. The publisher only issued the first four ‘Nights’and had Blake engrave and partially etch 43 plates to test the market. The response must have been poor since no further engravings were requested of Blake. Ironically today the poet Young once compared with Shakespeare and Milton is forgotten save for this edition. Two bookplates in each volume otherwise a fine bright partially unopened set in the rare pictorial dust wrappers that for volume one split up the upper joint with small chips at toe and crown of upper joint and another about half- way up the joint not affecting design and that for volume two with a shallow loss along the lower edge of the front panel and a small chip from the blank area of the toe of the upper joint. Preserved in a fleece lined folding cloth slipcase. Second and best edition enlarged with additional letters and a memoir of the author. The earlier of the bookplates are tipped to each free endsheet; the later bookplates are those of the Garden Library affixed to each pastedown. First edition. A selection of ten tipped-in color plates attended by Keynes' introduction and comments about each plate. The copy bears Keynes's presentation inscription on the title-page: "Graham Robertson from Geoffrey Keynes" and exhibits a correction in ink by Keynes in the text on p.24. There is another correction in pencil on p. 4 in another hand. A good association copy joining one of the great Blake collectors with one of Blake's primary scholar/editors. Robertson turns up among Keynes's friends for mention in THE GATES OF MEMORY 1981 pp102-3 and the Robertson estate as executed by Kerrison Preston gave the Blake Trust a substantial endowment to aid in its launch. Number 113 of 480 quarto size unpaginated 5 plates and 5 pp. of commentary. "The Book of Los" published in 1795 is one of Blake's prophetic books a sort of retelling of "Urizen" from the perspective of the character "Los". "The Book of Ahania" along with "The Book of Los" were some of the last of the series of Illuminated Books completed by Blake while living in Lambeth. The manner of their execution suggest that he was wearying with the effort of making the splendid books that preceded them and was seeking for a less laborious method of production. He completed only one copy of each book and then laid them aside as if dissatisfied with his experiment. He never included either of them in any list of his productions and is not known to have disposed of them to any customer or patron. They therefore remained unknown until late in the nineteenth century. <br/><br/>William Blake 1757-1827 is arguably the most original and highly regarded English author - unusual in that he excelled both as an author and an artist. Although thought mad by his contemporaries he was held in high regard for his expressiveness and for the synthesis of philosophical and mystical senses within his work. Two volumes number 522 of 540 folio and octavo sizes unpaginated 21 plates and 10 pp. of commentary. "There is No Natural Religion" is a series of gnomic aphorisms written in 1788. The plates were made by relief etching on copper and are among Blake's earliest experiments in this method of etching for his illuminated books. The different states slightly vary in the order of the plates with copy L Series b considered to be Blake's first Illuminated Book. The text as described by Geoffrey Keynes in his description ".state Blake's belief in the spiritual and mystical nature of man and the unreality of vegetable existence and reason. In the first series he has stated and reiterated the inadequacy of regarding man as a creature limited in his perceptions by his natural organs. The idea of a 'natural' religion such as might have been satisfied by his Deist friends Paine Priestly and Godwin is therefore discarded as absurd. In the second series Blake has restated in the first Proposition the essence of the first series and has then proceeded to elaborate the effect that such mental limitation would have on its possessor. He would be filled with loathing and despair seeing nothing beyond himself performing the same dull round over and over again. Man is saved by his poetic or 'prophetic' faculties. The plates are comprised of 22 fascicules including the title-page and 21 plates of Blake's engraved Illustrations of the Book of Job in facsimile of the proof copy lately in the collection of Sir Geoffrey Keynes. Each fascicule also contains reproductions of related material together with a plate-by-plate commentary by Bo Lindberg. Colour versions of WIlliam Blake's Book of Job designs. with three portfolios containing "The New Zealand Set" of 21 plates and a title-page "The Collins Set of Coloured Engravings" of 21 plates and a title-page and "Four Coloured Engravings" of plates 11 15 18 and 20 from The Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge. Plates printed by pochoir method at the Trianon Press Paris under the supervision of the late Arnold Fawcus.A surprisingly hard title to find from the Blake Trust being their last publication until the 2009 issue of “The Grave†watercolors. The edition included a less expensive version of this issue as well as two more elaborate issues. The analysis of the various states of the Job plates and of the coloring of the three colored copies known is not printed anywhere else and thus this set is essential for anyone studying this book surely Blake’s masterpiece of engraving.
