Cervantes Miguel
Bando El gobierno procedera al arrendamiento de las fincas rusticas pertinecientes al fondo piadoso de Californias.
Mexico June 1 1832. First edition Mexico City issue of a rare and important bando on the California Pious Fund. These large 43x31 cm folio bando issues are rare because they were printed in oversize format on recto only in order to be posted in public places. Not in Cowan one copy only recorded on OCLC at Yale probably from the Streeter Collection. The Jesuit/ Franciscan holdings "donated" during the 18th and 19th century for the benefit of the California Missions exclusively were being confiscated by the Mexican government ostensibly for the same purpose but in reality the funds were totally misappropriated. The importance of this decree may be inferred by the fact that it was one of the decrees presented as evidence in the Pious Fund case that came before the International Court of Arbitration in 1899. Cervantes is described as "general de brigada y gobernador del Distrito Federal": he had been Iturbide's aide de camp and captain of the imperial guard. This is a remarkably fine double folio sheet with original folds. Quite rare.

unknown books

Cervantes Miguel De
El ingenioso hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha.
Madrid: Gabriel de Sancha 1797-98. First edition of the first annotated edition of Don Quixote. Octavo five volumes bound in contemporary tree calf covers with a swashed diagonal cross edged with a gilt roll gilt bands and green lettering pieces marbled endpapers sprinkled edges. With 2 engraved portraits 2 engraved headpieces 3 folding maps and 31 engraved plates executed by P. Duflos and Moreno Tejada after R. Ximeno A. Navarro Monnet and Camaron y Paret. In near fine condition. "This beautiful edition which is printed on excellent paper is of the highest importance for Pellicer's erudite notes and commentary and for his painstaking corrections of the text" Ruis. By focusing his attention on the authentic Spanish folklore that Cervantes would have drawn upon Pellicer set the precedent for modern editorial methods. The present edition is illustrated with numerous fine plates described by Ashbee as "among the finest produced in Spain." Palau 52030; Salva 1568; Mas II 446; Ruis I 59; Ashbee Iconography of Don Quixote 93. Don Quixote tells the tale of a man so entranced by reading about the chivalrous romantic ideals touted in books that he decides to take up his sword and become a knight-errant himself with the aims of defending the helpless and warding off the wicked. With his somewhat confused laborer-turned-squire Sancho Panza they roam the world together and have adventures that have haunted reader's imaginations for nearly four hundred years. Don Quixote is generally recognized as the first modern novel. Over those years it has had an incredible influence on thousands of writers from Dickens to Faulkner who once said he reread it once a year "just as some people read the Bible". Vladimir Nabokov said of the book: "Don Quixote is greater today than he was in Cervantes's womb. He looms so wonderfully above the skyline of literature a gaunt giant on a lean nag that the book lives and will live through his sheer vitality. He stands for everything that is gentle forlorn pure unselfish and gallant. The parody has become a paragon." Gabriel de Sancha unknown books

Cervantes Miguel de. Translated by Charles Jarvis
The Adventures of Don Quixote De La Mancha; Translated From the Spanish of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Fore-edge Painting.
London: Ward Lock & Co c. 1880. Finely bound example of Jarvis' translation of Cervantes' masterpiece. Octavo bound in full morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine double gilt ruling to he front and rear panel marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Illustrated by Tony Johannot tissue-guarded frontispiece in color. With a fore-edge painting of Don Quixote charging on his trusty steed Rocinante. In near fine condition. Often cited as the first modern novel Cervantes' masterpiece Don Quixote remains not only the most influential work of literature to emerge from the Spanish Golden Age but the most important work of the entire Spanish literary canon. First published in 1605 Don Quixote gained immediate popularity in Spain for its "variety liveliness and gibes at the famous" while Cervantes' universal portrayal of the human condition has cemented its status as "one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times" PMM. The Ibarra edition swiftly became the preferred edition in Spain when it appeared in 1780 Palau 52024. "It is interesting to realize that the first modern novel was composed by a sick aged and impoverished man who believed that a satirical tale might produce more revenue than the poems and plays that he regarded as his more serious mission. Under the guise of a parody on romances of chivalry Cervantes created a study of reality and illusion madness and sanity that links him with such acute 16th-century students of psychology as Erasmus Rabelais Montaigne and Shakespeare" Folger's Choice 30.
