‎Première édition en second tirage, comprenant les feuillets d'errata contenant un article écrit après le début de l'impression de l'ouvrage Sur les découvertes des Hollandois dans l'Australasie, d'après l'ouvrage de Nicolas Struyck (tome 1 pages 437* à 450*). Cet ouvrage constitue un des livres les plus importants consacré aux premières explorations dans le Pacifique sud. "Son étude marque une date dans la connaissance de l'Océanie (.) de Brosses, en rassemblant tous les textes connus des voyageurs, battit, autour des Terres Australes, le rappel des savants et aida à créer un climat favorable aux explorations scientifiques et aux installations coloniales. Son ouvrage est capital pour l'histoire ancienne de l'Océanie." O'Reilly. C'est un recueil des récits de la plupart des grands voyageurs dans les mers du sud, débutant avec le second voyage de Vespucci en 1502 jusqu'aux voyages de Magellan, Drake, Schouten, Tasman etc. Ses idées ont influencé Bougainville, le capitaine Cook a emporté avec lui une copie de l'œuvre de Brosses lors de son premier voyage, dans la bibliothèque des livres embarqués sur La Boussole et L'Astrolabe par Lapérouse figurent L'histoire des voyages du Président de Brosses. Sur ses conseils, Bougainville choisit le naturaliste Philibert Commerson pour l'accompagner. Les anglais Wallis et Carteret s'inspirent des indications de notre auteur, on lui doit notamment les termes de "Australasie" et "Polynésie". Original edition, second issue.
