‎Roy. 8vo., title in red and black; brown cloth, upper board framed in blind and blocked with the arms of the City of Norwich in gilt, a remarkably bright, clean copy of an uncommon work. The first catalogue, published in 1706, was followed by Mackerell's compilation of 1732. The present (and last published) edition lists over 1,700 works, the latest of which were published in the early eighteenth century, together with an extensive list of benefactors. Amongst the collection are a number of specimens of early printing by Caxon, De Worde, Julian Notary, Pynson, Grafton and several continental printers. There is also a collection of Elizabethan and Jacobean theological tracts relating to the Reformation, and another of Chancery Records. Among the donors to the library were the Rev. Richard Ireland and the Rev. Thomas Nelson, each of whom presented his entire library. The former also donated his copy of the celebrated Wiklif Bible, now in the Norfolk and Norwich Musum. SCARCE. ‎Von größter Seltenheit; kein Exemplar im Jahrbuch der Auktionspreise. - Originalausgabe der ersten und maßgeblichen Monographie über die Anfänge des Musiknotendrucks und den Musik-Drucker und Musik-Verleger Ottaviano dei Petrucci [1466-1539] und dessen Nachfolger in einem dekorativen Wiener Meistereinband; mit vollständiger Bibliographie der ältesten Musikdrucke mit beweglichen Metalltypen aus Petruccis Verlag (mit Standort-Nachweisen) und allen wichtigen Dokumenten. - Petrucci stammte aus Fossombrone (Oberitalien) und stand zunächst unter dem Einfluß des Herzogs von Urbino. Um 1490 kam er nach Venedig, um Buchdrucker zu werden; in seiner Erfindung übertrug er Gutenbergs Prinzip der mobilen metallenen Lettern auf ein Druckverfahren für die polyphone Musik seiner Zeit. "Seine Druckmethode vollzog sich in drei Phasen: zuerst wurden die Linien gedruckt, dann die Noten und endlich die Textworte, die verzierten Anfangsbuchstaben, die Nummern des Registers und der Seiten. Die Notentypen entsprachen allen Kombinationen der Mensuralmusik" (Claudio Sartori in MGG 10, 1141). 1498 beantragte Petrucci beim Dogen und Senat der Republik Venedig das Privileg zum Drucken und Verlegen von Mensuralmusik sowie Orgel- und Lautentabulaturen, das ihm auf 20 Jahre gewährt wurde. Sein erstes Verlagswerk konnte am 15. Mai 1501 erscheinen: "Harmonice musices odhecaton" - eine neue Ära mit weitreichenden Folgen, nicht nur für das Musikleben, hatte begonnen. "Die Präzision der Überlagerung der drei Drucke war vollkommen und das 'Odhecaton' blieb in der Eleganz der Typen und in der Klarheit des Drucks das unübertroffene Modell in der Geschichte des Musikdrucks" (MGG 10, 1139). In der folgenden "1. venetianischen Periode" Petruccis (bis 1509) legte er eine stattliche Zahl mustergültiger, sorgfältig hergestellter und elegant wirkender Musikdrucke vor, neben mehreren Lautentabulaturen meist mit geistlicher, aber auch weltlicher Vokalmusik von Brumel, Busnois, Compère, Ghiselin, Josquin, Obrecht, de la Rue u.v.a. Darunter befinden sich Ausgaben einzelner Autoren, die Mehrzahl aber sind Sammelausgaben mit Werken verschiedener Komponisten. Zwischen 1511 und 1520 zog sich Petrucci in seine Vaterstadt Fossombrone zurück und gründete dort eine neue Druckerei (mit Verlag), deren Produktion allerdings von einem deutlichen Qualitätsverlust infolge Kommerzialisierung gekennzeichnet ist. Von 1520 an führte offenbar Andrea Antico da Montona in Venedig den Musikdruck mit Petruccis Typen weiter, gefolgt von Francesco Marcolini. 1536 offiziell nach Venedig zurückgerufen, druckte und verlegte Petrucci in dieser kurzen 2. venetianischen Periode nur noch lateinische und italienische Klassiker. Als ebenso schlichte wie berühmte Druckermarke wählte er einen Kreis mit Doppelkreuz und den Initialen: O. P. F. (= Octavianus Petrutius Forosemproniensis). Sein Verfahren wurde zunächst vielfach nachgeahmt, schließlich aber von Attaingnants einfachem Druckverfahren abgelöst. -Im Anhang "Verbesserungen und Zusätze" sowie mehrere Register (Schriftenschneider, Schriftgiesser, Musikdrucker, Buchhändler, Gelehrten, Schriftsteller, Tonsetzer, Gönner der Tonkunst). - Wolffheim II, 591 ("Sehr selten"); Eitner VII, 395. - Makelloses Exemplar.‎
