‎Separe du Breviaire et du Psautier, le Livre d'Heures etait devenu des le XIIIe siecle le livre de devotion du laic. Il correspondait a l'extension de la pratique de la lecture dans les couches de la societe, alliee a un evident detachement par rapport a l'emprise de l'eglise. L'intensification du culte porte a la Vierge Marie firent d'elle le theme central du Livre d'Heures qui s'organisa autour du petit Office qui la celebrait. Il contient aussi le textes d'autres Offices, dedies en general au Saint Esprit, a la Croix et aux morts ainsi que toute une serie de prieres et invocations variant selon la devotion de leur possesseur et commanditaire. Ce Livre n'etait pas destine aux Offices celebres dans l'Eglise; il etait sense etre utilise par n'importe quel laic, regulierement, aux heures canoniales, dans la solitudes de sa journee domestique. La pratique de recueillement que ce livre impliquait etait en meme temps un hommage et un lien avec la Vierge mais aussi un plaisir pour les yeux, car il fut des le debut, abondamment illustre et decore. Le Livre d'Heures devint ainsi un des joyaux dont s'enorgueillaient les plus riches et les plus nobles qui pouvaient se permettre les services des meilleures miniaturistes de l'epoque. Il fut aussi, plus modestement, celui de tout un chacun, a la mesure de ses moyens financiers. Le nombre impressionnant de le Livres d'Heures executes firent que l'on les appelle couramment aujourd'hui, les "best sellers" des derniers siecles de l'epoque medievale et ceux des annees qui suivirent l'introduction de l'impression. L'abbaye benedictine d'Einsiedeln (Suisse) est depuis des siecles une importante eglise de pelerinage. Sa bibliotheque abrite, parme des tresors insignes, douze Livres d'Heures qui sont ici etudies et publies pour la premiere fois. Leur provenance, la date d'execution et l'artiste ou l'atelier responsables de leur illustration etaient restes inconnus. Il s'est avere que parmi eux se trouvent aussi bien un manuscrit parisien d'une grande elegance , oeuvre d'un maitre repute, qu'un Livre d'Heures pittoresque et extremement rare illustre par une moniale alsacienne et destine a une nonne d'un Monastere suisse. Le corpus d'Einsiedeln comprend egalement un precieux et minuscule manuscrit flamand, ainsi qu'un Livre d'Heures "retouche" et transforme en Suisse au XVIe siecle a partir d'une ebauche abandonnee, realisee au nord de la France un siecle plus tot. Leur etudes nous a pose des problemes concernant leur datation, leur attribution et leur localisation, ainsi que la determnation du role que peut jouer un maitre au talent reconnu lors de l'illustration partielle ou totale d'un manuscrit modeste. Cette etude se propose de donner au lecteur la possibilite d'entrevoir quelques aspects de la piete du laic medieval par l'etude iconographique, liturgique et stylistique de ces douze Livres d'Heures realisees en France, dans les Flandres, dans le Rhin superieur ou en Italie, entre la fin du XIVe et le debut du XVe siecle. ‎A prized possession of the Cistercian convent of Marienbrunn in Rulle near Osnabruck in northern Germany was its richly illuminated gradual dating to c. 1300, which is of great significance in the history of medieval art for several reasons. With 52 historiated initials iconographically complex in their literary quotations from the liturgy, the manuscript ranks as one of the most lavishly decorated books of its type to survive. Painted in an elegant courtly Gothic style, it is ascribed in a prefatory inscription to the nun Gisela von Kerssenbrock, who wrote, notated, and decorated the manuscript "with golden letters and beautiful images." Such an encyclopedic listing of a scribe-artist's labors is unparalleled in medieval scribal colophons. The high quality of the miniatures ranks her among the most gifted women artists of the Middle Ages. Gisela is depicted in two self-portraits within the manuscript, in one of which she is leading the nuns of Rulle in singing the Christmas hymn, visual evidence that she was the choirmistress at this convent. The manuscript's images reflect the intellectual ambience of encloistered nuns who were steeped in the annual liturgical cycle of feasts with its associated bible readings, theological commentary, sermons, music, dramatic ritual, and artistic decoration. As it was used in the nuns' daily celebration of the mass, the book is an eloquent witness of the communal religious life of medieval women rather than their private meditations or mystical experiences.This study explores the imagery and texts associated with major feasts of the liturgical year and the novel ways in which music and text are woven into the artistic program of Gisela's manuscript. In particular, her book shows the seminal importance of the Easter celebration for convent life, as well over half of its illustrations are clustered in the Easter season; and the manuscript repeatedly gives artistic expression to the nuns' hopes of heaven. ‎Of all the Old Testament books, the Book of Job remains acutely contemporary today. Written between the 6th and 3rd c. B.C., it deals with subjects such as the presence of evil in the world, the misery, the quest for justice, the faith, and the behavior of people when they face sudden twists and turns of life. It seems that the ancient text had been illustrated since the Early Christian period because of its fascinating novel-like narrative style. In her own study on the Book of Job, Stella Papadaki-Oekland probes into all the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts of the illustrated Greek text. The number of miniature illustrations included in these fifteen manuscripts, dating from the 9th to the 16th century, comes to more than 1800 of which 2/3 of the about 380 illustrated herein are previously unpublished manuscript images. ‎The present volume analyzes the functions of landscape imagery within medieval Northern European manuscript illumination, and also takes into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. This book proposes a new methodological framework for the study of medieval landscape imagery, by analyzing the functions of landscape imagery within Northern European manuscript illumination. Taking a historicist approach, this study explores landscape imagery within a broad range of specific manuscript contexts, taking into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. Organized into three sections, this study will look at how landscape functioned as ornament, didactic tool (space) and political tool (place). The first section looks at the role that landscape imagery had in the hierarchy of book decoration, and how it responded to late medieval mnemonic systems and devotional practices. It also addresses the emergence of landscape as a form of ornamental elaboration, sometimes as a means to appeal to specific aesthetic criteria, or as a way to create extra-textual associations to augment the message of the text. The second section is concerned with landscape within encyclopedic and allegorical manuscripts, and will analyze how artists constructed space to communicate specific lessons or ideas, for example to frame debates about the role of agricultural labor or to present the dynastic ambitions of the Burgundian court. Finally, the third section explores the visualization of the political and economic landscape of late medieval Europe, particularly focusing on how landscape was structured to respond issues of status, power and identity not only in works created for the landed nobility but within manuscripts made for urban patrons as well. Concentrating on manuscripts from Paris, Northern France and Flanders from the late thirteenth to the early sixteenth centuries, this book will offer new insights as it contextualizes the emergence of landscape painting in the late middle ages. ‎These three volumes catalogue the extensive corpus of mycological drawings in the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Executed mostly in watercolour between 1625 and 1630 and depicting fungi native to Umbria and the environs of Rome, they constitute the first sustained attempt to survey all the larger fungi of a region, recording in detail the stages of their growth. Laden with notes on colour, smell, taste, weight, season and the locality in which the specimens had been found, the almost six hundred folios were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of Europe?s first scientific academy, the Accademia dei Lincei. They were acquired by Cassiano dal Pozzo after Cesi?s death and were greatly admired by those who saw them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thought to have been lost until their rediscovery in 1979 in the library of the Institut de France in Paris, the drawings are also remarkable for their pioneering use of the microscope, a novel instrument given to Cesi in 1624 by Galileo and used throughout the pages of these manuscripts to enhance the direct observation of nature. Also included are drawings of fungi commissioned by Cassiano and his brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, and an early set of copies of the Cesi originals in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Each drawing is reproduced in colour with accompanying text, and two introductory essays discuss the scientific investigations and collecting activities of Cesi and Cassiano and the importance of these drawings in the history of science and art. ‎Much attention is paid nowadays to the remarkable increase in the speed of communication that is transforming our planet into a global village. In fact, international contacts across frontiers have been with us for centuries. Humans were wandering nomads before becoming traveling salespeople who built towns and countries. They were naturally interested in what was going on next door. The European invention of the printed book and the appearance of printers and publishers made an important contribution to the scientific, cultural and intellectual development of the continent. The Low Countries, in particular Flanders with Dirk Martens and Christoffel Plantin Moretus among others, played a key role in this revolution, the value of which we still recognise today. This important event was the subject of a colloquium, with the title "Aspects of intellectual migration in sixteenth century Europe: Printers and publishers in Paris, Geneva and the Low countries", organised on 9 June 2000 by the Centre for European Culture under the auspices of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts.‎

This volume examines the role of epigraphic literacy within the newly introduced Christian culture and the developing tradition of literacy in Northern Europe during the Viking Age and the High Middle Ages. The epigraphic material under scrutiny here originates from Scandinavia and North-West Russia ? two regions that were converted to Christianity around the turn of the first millennium. Besides traditional categories of epigraphic sources, such as monumental inscriptions on durable materials, the volume is concerned with more casual inscriptions on less permanent materials. The first part of the book discusses a form of monumental epigraphic literacy manifested on Scandinavian rune stones, with a particular focus on their Christian connections. The second part examines exchanges between Christian culture and ephemeral products of epigraphic literacy, as expressed through Scandinavian rune sticks, East Slavonic birchbark documents and church graffiti. ‎Le quatrieme volume de la collection ? Reliures medievales des bibliotheques de France ? est voue aux manuscrits conserves a la bibliotheque municipale de Reims qui, pour la plupart, proviennent de la bibliotheque capitulaire Reims et de celles des abbayes de Saint-Remi et de Saint-Thierry. Le fonds manuscrit de ces trois bibliotheques remonte a l?episcopat d?Hincmar (845-882) et d?Adalberon (969-988), mais elles sont restees constamment en relation avec les mouvements intellectuels qui ont suivis et elles temoignent de l?intensite de la vie culturelle et spirituelle medievale. Les manuscrits de la bibliotheque capitulaire presentent un interet particulier, car le fonds manuscrit provient surtout des donations effectuees par les archeveques et les chanoines a la fin du XIVe et au debut du XVe siecle. La plus remarquable est celle de l?archeveque Guy de Roye (1390-1409), qui legue quelque 160 volumes a la bibliotheque capitulaire, mais la bibliotheque de Guillaume Fillastre, cardinal-pretre de Saint-Marc, rassemblee pendant ses sejours a Constance et en Italie aux environs de 1416-1418 est aussi du plus grand interet, car elle apparait comme la toute premiere manifestation de l?humanisme en France. C?est ainsi que se trouve rassemble a Reims un ensemble exceptionnel de reliures du XIVe et XVe siecle, moment cle dans l?histoire de la reliure. Ce nouveau catalogue offre aux chercheurs la matiere d?une reflexion renouvelee sur cette importante periode de mutation.‎
