Hebrew Printing in Naples is by leading Jewish bibliographer, and head of the NYPL Jewish Division, Joshua Bloch. Also includes, Pennsylvania Dutch Folk Art and Architecture, and Kingston to Newson to Blake. Includes facsimile of a beautiful Hebrew book from Naples. The Jews in Italy, Spain and Portugal were the first to make use of the newly-invented art of Gutenberg for the production of Hebrew books. Hebrew printing presses were set up in various parts of those countries, and produced virtually all known Hebrew books printed during the fifteenth century. Naples, the largest and most beautiful city of Lower Italy, became an early and quite important center of Hebrew printing, second only to Soncino, even as it had become a large center of Jewish life. Though of short duration, the Neapolitan was perhaps the most cosmopolitan Jewish community in the fifteenth century. With the exception of Soncino, none of the cities in Spain, Portugal or Italy can claim the production of as many Hebrew incunabula as were printed in Naples in less than a decade. The result is an index of 350, 000 Jews from almost 9, 000 communities who presubscribed for specific books by specific writers, their names having been noted in the books upon publication. " Haim Yosef David Azulai, commonly known as the Hida, was a Jerusalem born rabbinical scholar, a noted bibliophile, and a pioneer in the publication of Jewish religious writings (Wikipedia, 2016) . This book contains the names of authors of Jewish texts. Aaron Walden, a Polish Jewish Talmudist, editor, and author used Azulais book as a model, dividing his book into two parts: Maareket Gedolim, being an alphabetical list of the names of authors and rabbis, mostly those that lived after Azulai, but also including many of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries who were omitted by Azulai; and Maareket Safarimí an alphabetical list of book-titles (Wikipedia, 2016) . Reprint, first printed, 1899, 1905, 1909-1915. Original cloth with dust jackets. 4to. 282+492+ 612 pages. 3 out of the 4 volumes. The author, Margoliouth, was an [e]nglish bibliographer. He converted to Christianity and became a priest. He was in charge of the Hebrew, Syriac, and Ethiopic manuscripts in the British Museum from 1891 to 1914. (blackwellreference.com 2018) The first three volumes of G. Margoliouth's Catalogue of the Hebrew and Samaritan manuscripts in the British Museum, here reprinted, were published consecutively in 1899, 1905 and 1915. They were followed in 1935 by the publication of a fourth volume, compiled by J. Leveen and containing comprehensive indexes of personal names, titles, subjects and place names, together with an introductory account of the history of the British Museum's collection of Hebrew manuscripts. [. ] In the reprint, the plates which illustrated the first edition have been omitted. Otherwise the catalogue is unchanged. The original title is somewhat misleading. These included Toledot Even Reshef (1879; a biography of Abraham Firkovich, whom he knew in the Crimea) ; Sefer Massa Krim (1878; on travels in Crimea) ; Massale-Erez Kedem (1883; travels in Palestine and Egypt) ; Sefer Miflagot be-Yisrael (1899; on the Subbotniki and Hasidim) ; Zikhronot Bat Ammi (1920; a history of Russian Jewry over the previous 70 years) . A total of six volumes were published, with two collected here Published Jerusalem: Institute for Commemoration of Galician Jewry. Extensively detailed genealogies of Galician rabbinical families are arranged alphabetically by surname. Most family sections include a genealogical chart. For prominent rabbis of each family biographical material is included, in particular rabbinical compositions, responsa correspondence and photographs. There is updated information of generations contemporaneous to the writing of the book. Many sources are quoted for each family and there is an extensive bibliography. This impressive and scholarly work is the most extensive and reliable source of rabbinical genealogy written in the twentieth century. Rabbi Meir Wunder was born in Haifa to a family which originated in Jaroslaw, Galicia. His rabbinic education was obtained at Poneveiz Yeshiva in Bnei Brak where he received rabbinical ordination from prominent rabbis. He also qualified as a rabbinical lawyer. After he attained general and pedagogical education and qualified for a B. A. , Rabbi Wunder taught at various schools. He holds qualification from the School of Librarianship of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and for many years managed the library at Poneveiz Yeshiva and other institutions. The principal part of his career was spent as a senior librarian at the National Library at the Hebrew University. The author, Sabato Morais was an American rabbi; born at Leghorn, Italy, April 13, 1823; died at Philadelphia Nov. 11, 1897. The Morais family came originally from Portugal, being probably among the large number of Jews who fled thence from the Inquisition. At the time of Sabato's birth Italy was in the thick of her great struggle for freedom
he formed a close friendship with Joseph Mazzini; and that patriot's struggle for Italian freedom was warmly seconded by Morais.
In 1850, owing to the withdrawal of Isaac Leeser, the pulpit of the Mickve Israel congregation at Philadelphia, Pa. , became vacant, and Morais was an applicant for the post. He arrived in Philadelphia on March 17, 1851, and was elected April 13 following, the synagogue services in the interval being conducted by him.
When, in 1867, Maimonides College was established in Philadelphia, Morais was made professor of the Bible and of Biblical literature; and he held the chair during the six years that the college existed. For a number of years thereafter he felt the urgent need of an institution for the training of Jewish ministers on historical and traditional lines; and the declarations of the Pittsburg Conference in 1885 urged him to immediate action. After a considerable agitation of the subject he succeeded, in conjunction with a few others, in establishing (Jan. , 1886) the Jewish Theological Seminary at New York. He was at once made president of the faculty and professor of Bible, holding both posts until his death. Unquestionably the establishment of the seminary constitutes Morais' most lasting influence upon Judaism in America. The directors of that body have fittingly recognized his memory by naming the chair of Biblical literature and exegesis the Sabato Morais professorship. In 1887 the University of Pennsylvania conferred upon him the honorary degree of doctor of laws, he being the first Jew so honored by that institution. The author, Sabato Morais was an American rabbi; born at Leghorn, Italy, April 13, 1823; died at Philadelphia Nov. 11, 1897. The Morais family came originally from Portugal, being probably among the large number of Jews who fled thence from the Inquisition. At the time of Sabato's birth Italy was in the thick of her great struggle for freedom
he formed a close friendship with Joseph Mazzini; and that patriot's struggle for Italian freedom was warmly seconded by Morais.
In 1850, owing to the withdrawal of Isaac Leeser, the pulpit of the Mickve Israel congregation at Philadelphia, Pa. , became vacant, and Morais was an applicant for the post. He arrived in Philadelphia on March 17, 1851, and was elected April 13 following, the synagogue services in the interval being conducted by him.
When, in 1867, Maimonides College was established in Philadelphia, Morais was made professor of the Bible and of Biblical literature; and he held the chair during the six years that the college existed. For a number of years thereafter he felt the urgent need of an institution for the training of Jewish ministers on historical and traditional lines; and the declarations of the Pittsburg Conference in 1885 urged him to immediate action. After a considerable agitation of the subject he succeeded, in conjunction with a few others, in establishing (Jan. , 1886) the Jewish Theological Seminary at New York. He was at once made president of the faculty and professor of Bible, holding both posts until his death. Unquestionably the establishment of the seminary constitutes Morais' most lasting influence upon Judaism in America. The directors of that body have fittingly recognized his memory by naming the chair of Biblical literature and exegesis the Sabato Morais professorship. In 1887 the University of Pennsylvania conferred upon him the honorary degree of doctor of laws, he being the first Jew so honored by that institution.
