This book proposes a new methodological framework for the study of medieval landscape imagery, by analyzing the functions of landscape imagery within Northern European manuscript illumination. Taking a historicist approach, this study explores landscape imagery within a broad range of specific manuscript contexts, taking into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. Organized into three sections, this study will look at how landscape functioned as ornament, didactic tool (space) and political tool (place). The first section looks at the role that landscape imagery had in the hierarchy of book decoration, and how it responded to late medieval mnemonic systems and devotional practices. It also addresses the emergence of landscape as a form of ornamental elaboration, sometimes as a means to appeal to specific aesthetic criteria, or as a way to create extra-textual associations to augment the message of the text. The second section is concerned with landscape within encyclopedic and allegorical manuscripts, and will analyze how artists constructed space to communicate specific lessons or ideas, for example to frame debates about the role of agricultural labor or to present the dynastic ambitions of the Burgundian court. Finally, the third section explores the visualization of the political and economic landscape of late medieval Europe, particularly focusing on how landscape was structured to respond issues of status, power and identity not only in works created for the landed nobility but within manuscripts made for urban patrons as well. Concentrating on manuscripts from Paris, Northern France and Flanders from the late thirteenth to the early sixteenth centuries, this book will offer new insights as it contextualizes the emergence of landscape painting in the late middle ages. FINE ISBN 9781905375769.‎ ‎The Paper Museum ('Museo Cartaceo') is a collection of some 10,000 drawings and prints assembled during the seventeenth century by the Roman patron and collector, Cassiano dal Pozzo, and his younger brother, Carlo Antonio. It represents one of the most significant attempts before the age of photography to embrace human knowledge in visual form, documenting ancient art and culture, architecture and topography, natural history and social customs. The 160 drawings catalogued in this volume are derived from five ancient manuscripts: the famous Vatican Vergil, the so-called 'Roman' Vergil, the Vatican Terence, and the less well-known Palatine Agrimensores, all in the Vatican Library, and from a fifth codex, now lost, known as the Chronography or Calendar of the year 354. The bulk of the drawings were copied for Cassiano between 1632 and 1634 for the purpose of studying both the characters depicted and the allied evidence of ancient costume and artefacts. By the later seventeenth century, when Pietro Santi Bartoli executed the last group of drawings in the present volume for Carlo Antonio, manuscript illustrations had come to be cherished as much for their rarity as examples of ancient painting as for their documentary value. Introductory essays provide an overview of the dal Pozzo commissions, the manuscripts and their history down to Cassiano's day, as well as their study in the wider context of classical scholarship through to the eighteenth century. All the drawings are reproduced in colour at full page, with accompanying descriptions of the subjects or relevant ancient verses in modern translation and brief commentaries. Cassiano dal Pozzo played a fundamental role in this project: it was he who commissioned and supplied most of the drawings and then arranged for them to be engraved for Ferrari's projected work. The citrus drawings - grouped in the Catalogue under the headings of citrons, lemons, oranges, pummelos, hybrids, monstro sities and unidentified citrus fruit - are reproduced in full colour and are accompanied by a wealth of comparative material which includes the Hesperides engravings, additional drawings and photographs of actual specimens, mainly of the monstrous kind. In addition to detailed scientific descriptions of the specimens themselves, the catalogue also gives art historical information on watermarks, annotations, types of mount, provenance and literature. Executed mostly in watercolour between 1625 and 1630 and depicting fungi native to Umbria and the environs of Rome, they constitute the first sustained attempt to survey all the larger fungi of a region, recording in detail the stages of their growth. Laden with notes on colour, smell, taste, weight, season and the locality in which the specimens had been found, the almost six hundred folios were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of Europe?s first scientific academy, the Accademia dei Lincei. They were acquired by Cassiano dal Pozzo after Cesi?s death and were greatly admired by those who saw them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thought to have been lost until their rediscovery in 1979 in the library of the Institut de France in Paris, the drawings are also remarkable for their pioneering use of the microscope, a novel instrument given to Cesi in 1624 by Galileo and used throughout the pages of these manuscripts to enhance the direct observation of nature. Also included are drawings of fungi commissioned by Cassiano and his brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, and an early set of copies of the Cesi originals in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. They may all be wrong in the sense that it was there all the time; there was never a dramatic change or 'commercial revolution' but rather a comparatively peaceful and steady growth. It is true that trade in bulk commodities entered a phase of expansion around the middle of the twelfth century, but this development built, to a very large extent, on pre-existing structures. Trade in basic commodities such as timber, grain, salt and pottery that had been going on since time immemorial now expanded both in terms of volumes and of geography, while new important items - for instance beer, stone and various stone products - were gradually introduced into the system. Ships, trade routes and commercial networks changed, old centres declined and new ones emerged, but by and large nothing of this came about in a 'revolutionary' fashion, althought the long-term effects were profound. Using a wide range of new or previously ignored sources, the authors of this volume challenge a number of long-established patterns of thought in medieval historiography. Focusing attention firmly on the basic commodities of everyday life, rather than on objects of more or less conspicuous consumption, the articles shed light on new and important aspects of the expansion of trade in northern Europe between 1150 and 1400. ISBN 9782503548005.‎ ‎Parmi les 1100 manuscrits decouverts au Sinai en 1975 figurent deux codex georgiens, N Sin 13 et Sin 55, entierement palimpsestes. La couche inferieure conserve les deux seuls temoins connus de la litterature udi, idiome de l'ancien royaume albanien du Caucase. Copies au VIIe s., semble-t-il, ces palimpsestes albaniens revelent l'un, un texte lacunaire de l'Evangile de Jean emaille, en marge, de six annotations liturgiques et de tirets renvoyant peut-etre aux sections eusebiennes et a un lecture continue de Jean au Temps pascal ; l'autre, une compilation desordonnee de pericopes bibliques provenant presque toutes d'une traduction d'un lectionnaire grec de Jerusalem des annees 450-614. Sous-jacent a cette compilation, dont le but reste obscur, apparait un authentique lectionnaire liturgique albanien qui a pu etre utilise en Albanie du Caucase des apres 450. Ce document est caracterise par le souci d'attenuer une dependance, non seulement vis-a-vis du lectionnaire hierosolymitain, mais aussi par rapport aux lectionnaires armenien et georgien fideles a la tradition hagiopolite. La compilation du second palimpseste repond-elle a l'intention de composer par la suite un lectionnaire albanien encore plus distinct des textes jerusalemite, armenien et georgien, l'Eglise albanienne ayant souvent manifeste a l'egard des Eglises armenienne et georgienne un desir d'autonomie, voire meme d'autocephalie. Ce document albanien enrichit notre connaissance de l'antiquite chretienne. Ondanks oorlogen en economische crisissen wisten de Verdussens door een mengeling van voorzichtigheid, flexibiliteit, durf, volharding, imitatie en natuurlijk ook geluk, hun bedrijf uit te bouwen tot een belangrijke speler in de katholieke wereld. Hieronymus Verdussen was de eerste van zijn familie: hij begon omstreeks 1589 in Antwerpen een uitgeverij-drukkerij-boekwinkel. Vele nazaten waren werkzaam in de boekenbranche, tot in de 19e eeuw aan toe. Hun handelscontacten strekten zich tot ver over de landgrenzen heen, hetgeen de Verdussens tot een van de interessantste uitgeversfamilies van de Zuidelijke Nederlanden maakt. In juni jl. verdedigde Stijn Van Rossem zijn proefschrift over deze familie Verdussen. Hij concentreert zich op de 17e eeuw: ?Ondanks oorlogen en economische crisissen wisten de Verdussens door een mengeling van voorzichtigheid, flexibiliteit, durf, volharding, imitatie en natuurlijk ook geluk, hun bedrijf uit te bouwen tot een belangrijke speler in de katholieke wereld?. Van Rossem noemt de Verdussens ?informatiehandelaars?. Omdat de familie zo lang in het boekenvak actief is gebleven, is een belangrijk deel van het archiefmateriaal bewaard gebleven. Van Rossem behandelt echter alleen de periode ten tijde van het Spaans bestuur van de Zuidelijke Nederlanden sinds de val van Antwerpen (1685) tot het begin van de Spaanse Successieoorlog (1702). Plus rares sont les impressions de premiere main livrees par les visiteurs. Le recit d'Ahmed Zaki (1867-1934), lettre arabe decrit par son biographe comme ? maghrebin d'origine, palestinien de culture, egyptien d'enracinement ? , est d'autant plus precieux qu'il permet de faire entendre une voix non-europeenne. Autodidacte, l'homme oeuvra sa vie entiere en Egypte au renouveau des lettres arabes. Grand bibliophile, il collectionna les ouvrages rares en langue arabe. Amateur d'art, il defendit avec passion la renaissance de l'architecture islamique. L'ampleur des curiosites de cet esprit eclaire donne une saveur particuliere au compte rendu de ses visites repetees (du 18 avril au 12 juillet 1900) aux installations de l'Exposition. Zaki fait partager a son lectorat arabe ses enthousiasmes et ses irritations, a travers une ecriture fleurie, emaillee de vers, proverbes et maximes populaires. La traduction en francais de son texte invite ainsi a une double decouverte : l'Exposition universelle vue par un homme de lettres egyptien, et la facon toute particuliere dans laquelle il retranscrit ses observations.
