Meme si le fait d'organiser des expositions sur la reliure a decor fait partie de la vocation premiere de la Bibliotheca Wittockiana, ces manifestations ont toujours une raison bien particuliere d'etre. L'idee d'une exposition sur la reliure actuelle en France est nee du malaise ressenti a l'egard de cette reliure a decor, appelee par les uns -reliure d'art- et par les autres -reliure originale-. Ce malaise s'est traduit par un certain desinteret manifeste ces derniers temps, aussi bien par certains relieurs que par certains collectionneurs, libraires ou conservateurs. En rassemblant un choix de quelque cent cinquante reliures a decor creees par vingt-sept relieurs professionnels exercant en France, reliures executees pour la plupart au cours de ces dix dernieres annees, la Bibliotheca Wittockiana pose le probleme d'une eventuelle nouvelle adaptation du relieur-createur devant le livre dont l'habit lui est aujourd'hui confie. Il y a en effet lieu de prendre en consideration l'evolution constante qu'a connue l'edition au cours de ces dernieres decennies : livre de peintre, livre d'artiste, livre-objet, livre conceptuel, livre tout court... La reliure d'art doit-elle completement s'effacer devant le texte ou l'image qu'elle recouvre? Le relieur-createur a-t-il le droit de rivaliser avec le poete ou le peintre? Certes, le dilemme ne date pas d'aujourd'hui, mais la lente metamorphose editoriale reactualise le probleme sur de nouvelles donnees. Par cette exposition, organisee avec le soutien de l'Ambassade de France en Belgique, la Bibliotheca Wittockiana veut donner l'occasion au visiteur de voir comment chaque artiste relieur a releve ce defi. Paperback, 102pp. ISBN 9789061942283. Jan Evertsen van Doorn was a bookseller and publisher active in Utrecht from about 1610 until his retirement in 1644. In addition to books, he also stocked music editions in a variety of genres, and in 1639 he published a Catalogus Librorum Musicorum listing all the music he had for sale. Though its existence was known through literary sources, Doorn's catalog was long thought to be lost. A copy survives in Paris at the Bibliotheque nationale, however, and is reproduced here in facsimile. In addition to this facsimile, the present volume includes a transcription of the original text with bibliographical annotations inserted. Three excellent indexes, "Composers and Editors," "Printers and Publishers," and "Lost Editions," provide easy and useful access to both the facsimile catalog and its transcription. The publication is graced with an introductory essay by Henri Vanhulst that places both the catalog and its contents in perspective within the musical milieu of their day. The essay codifies the careful and thorough study Vanhulst has obviously devoted to this document. Chief among the essay's most helpful features are six statistical tables that provide information on various aspects of the catalog, including chronologies of domestic and foreign editions, percentages of composers by nationality, and geographical distribution of printers and publishers. 624 pp., full-color, ISBN 9789490128180. In het boek 'Pelgrimstekens op Perkament' staat de vraag centraal: waarom vertonen laatmiddeleeuwse boeken zo vaak sporen van pelgrimstekens? Op basis van een honderdtwintigtal boeken, grotendeels ongepubliceerd materiaal, wordt een nieuwe blik geworpen op de functie die bedevaartssouvenirs en religieuze boeken vervulden in het dagelijks leven. Boeken zijn bewaarplaatsen voor allerlei aandenkens, ook in de late Middeleeuwen. Bezitters naaiden bedevaartssouvenirs aan het perkament van religieuze boeken. Verluchters schilderden pelgrimstekens en andere devotionalia in de marges, zo waarheidsgetrouw dat het lijkt alsof ze daar zijn ingenaaid. De middeleeuwse boeken worden nu bewonderd om hun schoonheid, maar ze hadden ook een praktisch nut als instrument dat het lichamelijk en geestelijk welzijn van de eigenaar moest waarborgen. Boeken met ingenaaide bedevaartssouvenirs laten zien hoe de bezitter het boek gebruikte, welke teksten hij het meest las, maar ook wie pelgrimstekens verzamelde. De nageschilderde pelgrimstekens die vooral in rijk verluchte, kostbare manuscripten zijn afgebeeld, vullen de kennis over de originele insignes aan. De margemotieven vervulden in het boek vooral een decoratieve en structurerende rol. Daaraan kon de verluchter desgewenst een extra betekenis toevoegen door een relatie te leggen met de omlijste tekst of miniatuur. In het boek 'Pelgrimstekens op perkament' wordt de betekenis van bedevaartssouvenirs belicht aan de hand van de boeken waarin ze verschijnen.

Jahrhunderts fur die franzosische Konigin Anne de Bretagne tatig war. Hochstes Lob erfuhr der Kunstler in der zeitgenossischen franzosischen Kunstliteratur, wo er in einem Zug mit Jean Fouquet, Jan van Eyck, Albrecht Durer oder Michelangelo genannt wird. Dennoch geriet er in Vergessenheit, und kein einziges heute bekanntes Werk kann sicher mit Poyer verbunden werden. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts entdeckte die kunstgeschichtliche Forschung den Kunstler neu, dabei schrieb man seinen Namen durch einen Transkriptionsfehler Poyet ? ein Irrtum, den das vorliegende Buch nach den Quellen korrigiert. Wenig uberzeugend oder unzureichend wurde der Name immer wieder fur verschiedene Einzelwerke in Anspruch genommen. Zu Beginn der 1980er Jahre machte die stilkritische Forschung das neu definierte Oeuvre eines Touroner Malers von ausserordentlich hoher Qualitat bekannt und brachte den hochgeruhmten Jean Poyer wieder ins Spiel. Allerdings blieb der Identifikationsvorschlag umstritten, da Poyer fur das letzte Drittel des 15. Jahrhunderts belegt ist, wahrend einzelne fur ihn in Anspruch genommene Werke uber seinen angenommenen Tod hinaus im fruhen 16. Jahrhundert entstanden scheinen. Erst jungste Erkenntnisse lassen Poyer als einen Kunstler hervortreten, der bereits um die Jahrhundertwende revolutionare Neuerungen in die franzosische Malerei einfuhrte. Poyers Oeuvre, das Handschriften, Tafelgemalde, Zeichnungen sowie nach stilverwandten Entwurfen ausgefuhrte Glasfenster umfasst und dessen Kompositionen ebenfalls in die Pariser Druckgraphik Eingang fanden, erfahrt hier erstmals zusammenhangende Betrachtung. Jean Pichore. Buchmaler, Graphiker und Verleger in Paris um 1500

Der Pariser Buchmaler Jean Pichore ist zwischen 1502 und 1520 in mehreren Quellen bezeugt, die ihn mit Bilderhandschriften und mit dem Pariser Buchdruck verbinden. Obwohl diese Dokumente schon im 19. Jahrhundert publiziert waren, erkennt die Forschung erst seit zehn Jahren die zentrale Rolle des Pariser Kunstlers fur einen langst bekannten Stil franzosischer Buchmalerei an der Schwelle zur Renaissance, der zuvor aufgrund grosser Auftrage fur den Rouenaiser Erzbischof Kardinal Georges d'Amboise als 'Schule von Rouen' galt. Zwar ist Pichores Bedeutung inzwischen unbezweifelt, doch wird die Bestimmung seines Oeuvres weiterhin kontrovers diskutiert, da an der Ausstattung der Handschriften seines Stils offenbar mehrere Maler beteiligt waren, unter denen zwei Stilvarianten charakteristisch hervortreten. Da der der eine Stil die bedeutendsten Auftrage und die meisten Frontispizien bestimmt, wahrend der andere den grossten Teil der Werkstattproduktion ausmacht, stehen die Identitat des Meisters und die Struktur seiner Werkstatt in Frage. In einer Umbruchzeit des Buchgewerbes tritt Pichore als zukunftsorientierter Unternehmer auf, dessen Werkstatt nicht nur Buchmalerei, sondern auch Metallschnittserien fur den Stundenbuchdruck produzierte. Im Jahr 1504 verantwortete er sogar - zusammen mit einem sonst nicht beurkundeten Remy de Laistre - zwei gedruckte Stundenbucher als Verleger. Ausgehend von Pichores bislang unterschatzter Rolle im Pariser Fruhdruck erfahren seine Werkstatt, die Frage nach der Abgrenzung einzelner Kunstler und die Herkunft der Vorlagen aus der Touroner Buchmalerei und deutscher Graphik neue Betrachtung. Die Westrose der Sainte Chapelle, gestaltet um 1490 im Auftrag Konig Karls VIII., ist eine in vielerlei Hinsicht ratselhafte Schopfung: Einerseits reprasentiert sie in aussergewohnlicher Weise ein Werk flamboyanter Glaskunst des ausgehenden 15. Jahrhunderts in einem ansonsten stilreinen Bauwerk aus der Zeit Ludwigs des Heiligen (1214-1270), andererseits stellt sie ein Thema dar, dem man in der Glasmalerei nur selten begegnet - die Apokalypse. Die Offenbarung nach Johannes ist ein Sujet, das originar mit Buchkunst verbunden ist: Sie ist uns aus Handschriften des 13. bis 15. Jahrhunderts uberliefert, zusatzlich fand das Thema im 15. Jahrhundert weitere Verbreitung durch den Buchdruck: Die Blockbuchapokalypsen zum einen und Bibeldrucke der Inkunabelzeit zum anderen. Es erstaunt demnach nicht, dass man in der Pariser Apokalypsenrose die Hand eines Kunstlers identifiziert, der in Paris um 1500 als Illuminator und besonders als Entwerfer fur graphischen Buchschmuck bekannt war. Masters of the Dark Eyes. Late Medieval Manuscript Painting in Holland

This study deals with the work of the most prolific Dutch book illuminators, the so-called Masters of the Dark Eyes, named after the most conspicuous aspect of their style: the dark, heavily accentuated shadows round the eyes of the figures. With their elaborately illuminated manuscripts, these masters completely dominated book production in the County of Holland during the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries. Their work is characterized by an overwhelming wealth of decorative and pictorial richness, which is especially evident in the unusually ornate programmes of the Books of Hours, and a new type of border decoration derived from the Ghent-Bruges School. This style of painting was practised by many artists of differing talents, as demonstrated by the large number of surviving manuscripts. Not all of the illuminators worked in Holland. Some of them settled in the Southern Netherlands, others emigrated to England, where they illuminated manuscripts for members of the English court. This monograph seeks to order, analyze and evaluate the work of the Masters of the Dark Eyes, and to position their achievements within the context of book illumination in the Northern Netherlands during the 'Waning of the Middle Ages'. It explores a virtually uncharted territory of Dutch manuscript painting. The accompanying descriptive catalogue provides complementary information on more than 70 manuscripts, many of which have never been published at length before. Les notices, accompagnees chacune d'un frotti, sont classees suivant l'ordre alphabetique des themes decoratifs. Ce classement permet de mieux integrer les cas douteux et de constituer un instrument de recherche facile d'acces. Chaque notice comprend trois parties: identification de la plaque, liste et description des livres manuscrits ou imprimes qu'elles decorent (avec indication des possesseurs et des cotes anciens) et enfin un commentaire historique indiquant notamment les elements permettant de dater ou de localiser une plaque. Une bibliographie termine la notice. Les auteurs ont etabli les limites chronologiques de l'emploi des plaques en France depuis environ 1480 jusqu'aux annees 1535/1536 en faisant ressortir les influences venues des Pays-Bas ou ce type de decoration etait connu des le XIVe siecle. Le role de Paris est evidemment essentiel, mais d'autres centres importants ont pu etre reperes, a Lyon notamment, mais surtout en Normandie. La consultation de l'ouvrage est facilite par une table alphabetique generale et par une liste des plaques divisee en trois parties: localisations sures, localisations possibles, localisations douteuses. Vient ensuite une table par cote des livres cites. Non seulement les historiens et les historiens du livre, mais egalement les amateurs et les collectionneurs de reliures disposent desormais d'un instrument de reference qui n'est certainement pas pret d'etre remplace. Early Medieval Palimpsests

The practice was particularly important in the early Middle Ages, when numerous, often precious, books were subjected to this treatment. As a result, many ancient texts lay hidden in European libraries for centuries. Ever since the first palimpsests were discovered in the seventeenth century, scholars have been fascinated by the possibility of discovering hitherto unknown texts. For a long time, the lower script of palimpsests could only be brought back to the light of day through the use of chemical reagents that proved very detrimental to the manuscripts. The great advance away from these destructive techniques came at the beginning of the twentieth century with the application of ultra-violet photography. Today, striking advances in this field are again being made with the development of digital imaging. The contributions in this volume focus mainly on the cultural evidence offered by palimpsests from the early Middle Ages. Some contributors have examined particular manuscripts in great detail (the London palimpsest of Jerome's Chronicle or the Munich palimpsest codex from Benediktbeuern); others have looked at specific types of texts that have suffered deletion in this way (liturgical palimpsests, Carolingian letters). The Proceedings published here include contributions by specialists from over ten different countries, dealing with palaeographical issues such as ancient capital and lower-case lettering, writing and books in the Macedonian, Comnenian and Palaeologan periods, and Greek scribes and ateliers in the Renaissance (especially in manuscripts from the Iberian Peninsula). Many contributors also take a codicological approach and consider the material aspects of the codex, as well as other new research techniques. Finally, some papers deal with the book as object and how this relates to its content, as well as with the history of texts. The International Colloquia of Greek Palaeography are organized by the International Committee of Greek Palaeography, presided by Prof. Dieter Harlfinger. Elle sert aujourd'hui a comprendre comment le codex a ete constitue, a batir des hypotheses sur l'epoque et le lieu de sa confection. Pour les hellenistes, le recueil des planches de manuscrits dates publiees entre 1934 et 1939 par K. et S. Lake donnait un apercu de la reglure pour environ 400 manuscrits anterieurs a l'an 1200. Le present travail repose d'abord sur l'enquete realisee par J. Leroy dans les bibliotheques europeennes avec plus de 3.000 codices de parchemin jusqu'au XVIe siecle, pour la plupart non dates. Il utilise la methode de codification mise au point par ce savant. A cet ensemble ont ete integrees les analyses de catalogues recents qui mentionnent la reglure: plus de 900 autres temoins sont exploites. Une telle documentation fournit aux historiens des manuscrits grecs et aux codicologues une reference unique sur la question.
