THESAURUS LINGUAE GRAECAE: CANON OF GREEK AUTHORS AND WORKS
Upper corners bumped. Minor shelfwear to DJ now protected in mylar. ; With technical assistance from William A. Johnson ; 341 pages; A unique bibliography of literary works that survive from Greek antiquity, this Canon is a register of all the information stored in the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, a vast computerized database of Greek literature whose coverage is now being extended to the end of the Byzantine empire (c. 1453). The book encompasses nearly 3,200 authors, representing over 8,000 individual works and some 64,000,000 words of Greek text. It includes invaluable information on each writer's dates and geographical origins, their works, the genre to which each work belongs, the form in which each work survives, and the number of words each contains. Of particular usefulness is information on the standard or best textual edition of each work, as recommended by a special committee of the American Philological Association.

ROBERT ESTIENNE'S INFLUENCE ON LEXICOGRAPHY
DJ is price-clipped. Dustjacket has a few small nicks and one small tear. Rubbing to DJ. Minor bumping to book. ; Towering above printers of his time and their successors for many years afterward was the figure of Robert Estienne, the great French lexicographer of the sixteenth century, whose contribution to knowledge and its dissemination is the subject of this authoritative book. The span of Robert Estienne's life (1503 - 1559) encompassed the historical epochs and events which shaped his career: the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the invention of printing by movable type. His keen interest in the revival of ancient literatures and languages and his training in the art of printing pointed the road he would travel, and the climate of opinion in the Reformation determined his destiny. Robert Estienne promoted classical learning by printing the works of good authors; to spread knowledge of ancient literature he compiled dictionaries and grammars which were adopted by most of the universities of Europe. His dictionary of proper names of Biblical and classical origin, the Dictionarium historicum ac poeticum, became one of the great source books for later compilers of dictionaries and for authors. Ben Jonson showed familiarity with his texts; Spenser and Milton sometimes set translations of his phraseology directly into their poetry. Perpetuation of the few errors he made is one sure proof that his dictionaries were used and copied. An exemplar of learning in the classics and scripture, he searched in ancient manuscripts to avoid repeating the numerous errors that had crept into Bible translations over hundreds of years. ; 136 pages

POIESIS: BIBLIOGRAFIA DELLA POESIA GRECA 2006 (2 VOLUME SET) Volumes VII: I & II
2 volume set. Unwrapped in plastic. The origin of Poiesis springs from the desire to provide those who cherish an interest in the study of Greek and Byzantine poetry with a tool to search for relevant information, enabling readers to undertake a preliminary selection of material to be utilized and also facilitating in-depth study and further research. The Journal offers a yearly survey of all publications in the field of antiquities (books, journals, dissertations, miscellanies) that are totally or partly devoted to authors and themes of Greek poetry. A fairly extensive article is dedicated to each cited publication, from book-length works to brief notes of text criticism, thereby enabling readers to gain a clear understanding of the content of the individual studies. The decision to restrict the scope of inquiry to poetry is motivated by the historical distinction between prose and verse that embodies the essence of the literary system in ancient Greece, where the canon of the genera is founded on the difference between forms. Poiesis thus aims to combine in a single working tool the best characteristics of the two traditional bibliographic typologies: completeness of information, which is an intrinsic feature of bibliographical listings, and adequate description of the contents of each single study, an intrinsic feature of wider-ranging interpretative surveys. Editorial responsibility for individual authors and sectors of Greek poetic literature is entrusted to sub-editors with a specific background in the given subjects. A Byzantine section is coordinated by Enrico V. Maltese. ; 2 Volume Set; Vol. 7.1-2; 664 pages; Pp. XXXIV-480 (I) & Pp. XXXII-481-664 (II)
