Eeuwenlang waren kinder- en volksprenten met voorstellingen van Luilekkerland, Tijl Uilenspiegel, abc's en Sint-Nicolaas niet weg te denken uit de Nederlandse samenleving. Kinderen kregen de prenten als beloning voor goede schoolprestaties. Voor volwassenen waren er katholieke heiligenprenten, levenstrappen en allerlei spotprenten. De prenten werden met simpele middelen gedrukt en eventueel handmatig ingekleurd. Ze waren goedkoop en meestal geen lang leven beschoren. Daardoor zijn ze nu zeer zeldzaam. Aan het eind van de negentiende en het begin van de twintigste eeuw werden ze geleidelijk verdrongen door prentenboeken en strips. Kinderprenten, volksprenten, centsprenten, schoolprenten is een groots opgezet en omvangrijk naslagwerk waarin alle aspecten van deze prenten aan bod komen: van uitgevers en drukkers, productietechnieken en prijzen tot thematiek, censuur, verspreiding en gebruik. Vorstenportretten, de verkeerde wereld, volksfeesten, kermis en vermaak: het is maar een kleine greep uit de onderwerpen die aan bod komen. In het boek zijn bijna 500, dikwijls niet eerder vertoonde afbeeldingen van prenten opgenomen. Dit uitputtende overzichts- en naslagwerk is een must have voor elke boeken- en prentenliefhebber. Die vorliegende Studie ist die erste ausfuhrliche Untersuchung der Handschrift Ms. 68 in der Sammlung des J. Paul Getty Museums. Der Kodex enthalt zwei Texte des bedeutenden Humanisten und Diplomaten Enea Silvio Piccolomini, des spateren Papstes Pius II., De Curialium miseriis und Historia de duobus amantibus, die er 1444 noch vor Beginn seiner klerikalen Karriere verfasste. Die herausragende Bedeutung der Handschrift resultiert einerseits aus der buchmalerischen Ausstattung, die von besonderer Qualitat ist und von einem bis vor kurzem vollig unbekannten Buchmaler ausgefuhrt wurde, andererseits aus ihrer kulturhistorischen Stellung im Kontext des franzosischen Fruhhumanismus. Dem Piccolomini-Meister und seiner Werkstatt konnen auch eine Abschrift der Epistre Othea von Christine de Pizan in Den Haag sowie drei Miniaturen in einem Stundenbuch im Kunsthandel zugeordnet werden. Die Getty-Handschrift entstand wohl um 1465 in Bourges, auch weil der Auftraggeber mit Charles de France (1446?1472), dem jungeren Bruder des franzosischen Konigs Louis XI, identifiziert werden konnte. Die in dieser Studie erstmals versuchte Rekonstruktion von Charles Bibliothek weist sein ausgepragtes Interesse an antiken Schriften nach. Demnach beschaftigte er sich vor allem mit griechischen und romischen Philosophen, Dichtern und Geschichtsschreibern. Unter Zuhilfenahme literaturhistorischer Uberlegungen zu Eneas Texten sowie Uberlegungen zur Textinterpretation wird schliesslich Charles spezifisches Interesse an Eneas Texten rekonstruiert. Eine systematische Untersuchung der erhaltenen, in Frankreich entstandenen Handschriften mit Eneas Texten vermittelt zudem den weiteren Rezeptionskontext beider Texte in Frankreich im 15. Jahrhundert.

Zeven jaar geleden gingen wij in op de vraag van de academische overheid van de KU Leuven en organiseerden wij een tentoonstelling ter herdenking van de vierhonderdvijtigste verjaring van Erasmus overlijden. Juan Luis Vives heeft nog meer dan Erasmus met de Nederlanden te maken. Zijn tussenkomst, via zijn mecenas Willem van Croy, is beslissend geweest bij de uiteindelijke aanvaarding van het Collegium Trilingue door de Leuvense Universiteit. Volgens Erasmus zelf verenigde hij alle kwaliteiten in zich om de naam van Erasmus in de schaduw te stellen. Vives is inderdaad uitgegroeid, naast Erasmus, Thomas More en Bude, tot een van de belangrijkste figuren van het Europese humanisme. Zijn politieke traktaten vallen op door hun filosofische diepgang: voor zijn originele denkbeelden op het gebied van de psychologie kreeg hij zijn ideeen op het gebied van de armenzorg werden spoedig richtinggevend bij het uittekenen van een sociaal beleid. Het was dan ook ondenkbaar dat de vijfhonderste verjaring van de geboorte van de grote Spaans-Nederlandse humanist in Vlaanderen, dat hij als zijn tweede vaderland beschouwde, onopgemerkt zou voorbijgaan.

Les peintures qui ornent ces pages sont l??uvre de quatre artistes qui, en depit de leurs formations differentes (Catalogne, Sud de la France, Italie) ont collabore et se sont mutuellement influences. Als laagdrempelig en makkelijk te verspreiden medium beantwoordt het boek aan de materiele en conceptuele normen van de proces- en projectmatige kunst. De laatste jaren lijken beeldende kunstenaars het boek opnieuw te ontdekken als alternatief medium. Multiple Readings exploreert de historiek en de actualiteit van het kunstenaarsboek aan de hand van 50 baanbrekende boeken uit de afgelopen 50 jaar. Johan Pas, kunsthistoricus, docent en auteur, verzamelt al zon twintig jaar kunstenaarspublicaties. Hij selecteerde voor elk jaar een cruciale titel, waar mogelijk aangevuld met relevante historische documentatie. Daardoor neemt de opstelling de vorm aan van een bibliochronologie die zowel liefhebbers van het boek als geinteresseerden in de hedendaagse kunst zal aanspreken. De reeks start met een kunstenaarsboek van Carlo Belloli (Milano, 1960) en eindigt met een werk van Nico Dockx en Helena Sidiropoulos (Antwerpen, 2009). Tussenin zijn er werken te zien van o.a. Andy Warhol, Marcel Broodthaers, Anne-mie Van Kerckhoven, Jacques Charlier, Thierry Decordier, Guillaume Bijl, Dennis Tyfus, Walter Swennen en Jan De Cock. Johan Pas (b. 1963), professor, author and curator, shares in the exhibition his more than twenty years old passion for art books: "'Artists' books are more than any other artistic medium able to infiltrate into the cultural network. They are stubborn obstacles in time, simultaneously they spread out around the world, slowly but surely." Johan Pas selected for each year a title from his collection: 'This one title a year is a self-imposed restriction to keep the choice sharp and the story bright.' The story begins with Yves Klein and ends (for now) with Vaast Colson and Dennis Tyfus. In the book, Multiple/Readings, all exhibited books are extensively discussed and illustrated.

This is a book about the production and reception of engravings and metalcuts in the Rhine-Maas region during the second half of the fifteenth century. The Master of the Berlin Passion played a pivotal role in the printmaking industry of the Lower Rhine during this period. He, together with the engravers working in his ambit, specifically targeted their prints at the growing market for illustrated devotional manuscripts, doing so to an extent unparalleled by engravers elsewhere in Europe. As a result, experimental hybrid books combining manuscript and engraving were a phenomenon that flourished particularly in the Rhine-Maas region during the fifteenth century. The first part of this book deals with the production of engravings and metalcuts for the manuscript market, concentrating specifically on the Master of the Berlin Passion and the engravers and metalcutters in his circle. The motives of these printmakers related to broader cultural and social changes during the latter half of the fifteenth century. These were critical years of transition in methods of book production as printmakers and manuscript-makers across Europe strove to exploit the potential of new print technology combined with traditional craft skills. The second part of the book concentrates on the public for whom these printmakers worked. Prints that were pasted, bound or sewn into contemporary manuscripts, and which still remain in position, provide an unparalled opportunity to study the audiences of engravings and metalcuts. The vast majority of fifteenth-century prints no longer survive, and most of those that do are divorced from the original contexts in which they were used. These manuscripts thus provide an invaluable insight into the production, reception, circulation, meanings and functions of prints in the Rhine-Maas region at this time. The predominantly female ownership of Rhine-Maas manuscripts with inserted engravings is a major theme of the book. Most of the manuscripts discussed are vernacular prayerbooks or Books of Hours that belonged either to nuns or to members of the lay female gentry in the Low Countries. In many cases the books can be linked to the pietistic reform movement of the Devotio Moderna suggesting that, as in other areas of Northern Europe, there was a link between the use of prints and movements of monastic reform. This book contributes to our understanding of an important circle of print artists and their public; early uses of printing during the period of transition from manuscript to print; the functions of, and aesthetic attitudes towards, engravings in the fifteenth century and the role of engravings in religious devotion prior to the Reformation, particularly among women.
