18 SS. Mit 16 farbigen Abbildungen und einem gefalteten Frontispiz. Illustrierte Broschur. 8vo (18:24,5 cm).
Strasbourg, J. H. Ed. Heitz (Heitz & Mündel), 1903.
Folio (242 x 358 mm). 23, (1), (12) pp. With title vignette, 3 illustrations in the introduction and 3 facsimiled illustrations. Contemporary wrappers. Facsimile reproduction of Hermann Barkhusen's edition of Vespucci's "Mundus Novus" - the first and only folio edition, printed in Rostock in 1505. The specimen here reproduced in black and white on eight pages is remarkable for being the printer's personal copy, inscribed to himself on the title-page, which had been discovered in the municipal library of Frankfurt am Main upon a revision of the America department. - The celebrated account of Vespucci's voyage, undertaken at the orders of King Manuel I of Portugal in 1502, brought its author immediate fame, and the expedition still counts as one of the most important achievements in the history of exploration. Of all editions, the one here reproduced is the only one to contain the full-page globe map of the eastern hemisphere, accompanied by a six-line paragraph comparing the ancient knowledge of Ptolemy with the new discoveries. It was on account of this large woodcut map and the title woodcut representing a male and female savage that the folio size was employed, while all other editions were published in either octavo or quarto formats. The edition also includes Vespucci's famous star diagrams which pioneered navigation in the southern hemisphere. - Introduction by Emil Sarnow of Frankfurt and Kurt Trübenbach of Plauen. Issued as vol. 9 in the Alsatian publisher's series "Drucke und Holzschnitte des XV. und XVI. Jahrhunderts in getreuer Nachbildung". Wrappers somewhat duststained and chipped; publisher's advert loosely inserted. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel (1939-2015) with his ownership stamp to inside cover.

Denis, Michael.
Einleitung in die Bücherkunde. Erster Theil. Bibliographie [...]. Vienna, Johann Thomas Edler v. Trattner, 1795.
4to. (16), 293, (1) pp. With one engraved plate and one folded table. Title-page printed in red and black. Contemporary wrappers with handwritten title label to spine. Second edition, first of two volumes only, of this "at the time very remarkable work" (cf. Brunet) by the Viennese court librarian Denis (1729-1800), first issued in 1777. Divided into three parts, the first two discussing the history of the book from ancient times up to the Renaissance, including remarks on the invention of script and the shape of letters, on writing material and utensils, as well as a large section on letterpress printing. The third part covers the developments in the book sector up to the author's days, presenting famous European libraries and "representing the division of the humanities for the classification of a library" (cf. De Backer/S.), illustrated by the engraved plate and the folding table. The former shows the correlation of theology, law, philosophy, medicine, mathematics, history and philology with each other, while the latter lists these disciplines with their subcategories. - Wrappers slightly waterstained. Wide-margined, untrimmed copy. Lower right-hand corner of the title-page torn, not touching the text. Pages 177-184 transposed by the binder. From the library of the Viennese collector Werner Habel, with his signed and stamped ownership, dated 1977, to inner wrappers. De Backer/S. II, 1919, 48. Brunet II, 597. Ebert 5982. Graesse II, 361. Contemporary half cloth with giltstamped spine title. First edition. - The extensive history on letterpress printing in Vienna by the director of the Theresianum library and court librarian Denis (1729-1800) in two parts. The introduction lists Viennese printers in chronological order, while both main parts cover their publications between 1482 and 1560, indicating the libraries and private collections they are kept at. The title vignette shows the Garellian library at the Theresianum in Vienna, named after Nicolo Pio de Garelli (1675-1739), prefect of the Court Library. - Wants the engraved plate of printers' devices. A supplemental volume would be issued in 1793. Binding slightly rubbed, extremities bumped. Very wide-margined, partly untrimmed copy, somewhat brownstained throughout. Modern endpapers. Diderot, Denis & d'Alembert, Jean Le Rond.
Encyclopédie, ou dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une Societé de gens de lettres. Mis en ordre & publié par M. Diderot [...]; & quant à la partie mathematique, par M. d'Alembert [...]. "Paris" [i. e., Geneva], "1751-1772" [i.e., 1771-1776].
Folio. 17 text vols., 11 plate vols., 5 vols. of supplements. Without the 2 index vols. Altogether 33 vols. with 3129 plates (doubles and triples counted as such) and the engraved frontispiece. Contemporary marbled calf, gilt, with double spine labels. First edition, second printing, issued simultaneously with the final volumes of the original edition and even reproducing its predecessor's imprint down to the original years of publication. It can be distinguished from the original edition only by the missing accent over the word "Mathématique" and two additional composition errors in the title, for which reason the trade usually offers it as the first edition: indeed, among the more than fifty "Paris" folio editions of the "Encyclopédie" auctioned during the last decades, not a single one is identified as the Geneva reprint, although this edition's press-run was fully half as great as that of the Paris original. - The supplement volumes, which "had no formal connection with the original 'Encyclopédie' and involved a new group of contributors" (Darnton 33), are here present in the 1776-1777 edition published in Paris and Amsterdam, which is generally treated as part of the Paris first edition. Lough 15-21 & 52-110. Darnton 34. Cf. PMM 200.

Adolphe Rochas conservateur de la bibliothèque et du musée de la ville de Valence. Grenoble, Allier, 1890. 18 pp. "Tiré à 150 exemplaires". - Extremely rare complete series - and a charmingly bibliophilic copy - of this short-lived bibliographical journal evincing the development of a small, provincial circle of bibliophiles and bibliographers in the Dauphiné region of France. Evidently spearheaded by Chaper, who authored many of the first issues, the articles suggest a capable degree of scholarship and later issues are even elaborately-illustrated. Some of the earliest parts were issued in runs as small as 50 copies, according to the versos of the title-pages. - Camille-Eugène Chaper (1827-90) was a highly decorated military officer who, following his retirement from public life in 1875, devoted himself to his twin passions of regional bibliography and the management of mining operations. His collection of Dauphinoise imprints and authors (i.e., those of the former province of Dauphiné, capital Grenoble) was unrivalled, and he donated much material to the Bibliothèque de Grenoble. It is also recorded that he was particularly scrupulous about the provenance of his books and manuscripts, and if in any doubt about the propriety of an offering, he had the courage to steer clear of it. - The present example was evidently compiled with care by an admirer of Chaper - quite likely one of the authors mentioned above. OCLC shows a few US holdings of individual parts (eg. #9, on the printed playing-cards of the Grenoble region), but as far as we can tell, only the NYPL holds a complete run. Vicaire, Manuel de l'Amateur de Livres du XIXème Siècle I: 606-607 (giving an extremely detailed collation of all 11 parts); cf. also, e.g., the obituary in the Annales du Midi: revue archéologique, historique et philologique de la France méridionale (1891), pp. 129-131.
