CHRISTIAN BARTHOLOMAE, (1855-1925).
Altiranisches Wörterbuch: Zusammen mit Zum altiranichen Wörterbuch. Nacharbeiten und Vorarbeiten. Beiheft zum XIX. Band der 'Indogermanischen Forschungen' herausgegeben von Karl Brugmann und Wilhelm Streitberg. Mit einem persischen Vorwort von Badr al-Zaman Gharib.
New German Original very decorative leather bdg. 4to. (29 x 25 cm). In German and Persian. [xxxii], 1999; [xiii], 287, [35] p. Altiranisches Wörterbuch: Zusammen mit Zum altiranichen Wörterbuch. Nacharbeiten und Vorarbeiten. Beiheft zum XIX. Band der 'Indogermanischen Forschungen' herausgegeben von Karl Brugmann und Wilhelm Streitberg. Mit einem persischen Vorwort von Badr al-Zaman Gharib. Bartholomæ was a German scholar of Iranian and Indo-European studies. Bartholomae devoted the main part of his life and work to Iranian linguistics, his chief endeavor being directed toward the integration of Iranian into the framework of Indo-European languages. With great energy and endurance he met the challenge of the Old Iranian texts, both the Avesta and the Old Persian inscriptions, breaking new ground in the linguistic investigation of these texts, establishing their phonological development and morphological structure. Bartholomae was strongly conscious of the need for combining the indigenous Indian Parsi tradition with both classical Western philological methods and those of comparative linguistics in the interpretation of the Avestan texts and in this way did much to relieve the pressure on Zoroastrian studies to base themselves exclusively upon the Zoroastrian tradition. The progress of Iranian studies around the turn of the century, especially of Iranian linguistics, is thus most clearly reflected in Bartholomae's publications on Old Iranian, from Das altiranische Verbum (1878) to the Altiranisches Wörterbuch (1904) with its supplementary volume (1906). Bartholomae's first book, Das altiranische Verbum, was intended as the Iranian counterpart to several studies by Berthold Delbrück (mainly his Das altindische Verbum)and was therefore the first comprehensive presentation of the morphology and syntax of the Old Iranian verb to be written. In his Handbuch der altiranischen Dialekte (1883) he presented a more extensive and systematic comparative study of the phonology and morphology of the three old Indo-Iranian or Aryan languages (Avestan, Old Persian, and Old Indo-Aryan). The phonological part of this study, in which Iranian forms were derived from the original common Indo-Iranian forms, set a new standard for the linguistic analysis of both Indo-Iranian and Indo-European. What these two articles are to Old Iranian grammar, Bartholomae's Altiranisches Wörterbuch is to Old Iranian lexicography. Bartholomae spent over ten years compiling this work, which has been called "one of the best and most complete dictionaries written of any language" (M. J. Dresden), deservedly gaining the sobriquet of a chalkénteros. In it Bartholomae claimed to have collected and commented summarily on the entire Old Iranian linguistic material (both Avestan and Old Persian), as far as it was accessible in text editions. It was intended to replace F. Justi's Altbactrisches Wörterbuch (Leipzig, 1864), which had been the main source for Iranian lexicography, but had been made obsolete by K. F. Geldner's new edition of the Avesta (Stuttgart, 1885-95) and by the deeper understanding of the Pahlavi tradition achieved by scholars like M. Haug, E. W. West, and J. Darmesteter. Bartholomae added to the work of his predecessors by taking fully into consideration the tradition of the Parsi scholars, even where he regarded it as unreliable, and by supplementing Geldner's edition, which in fact contained fewer Avestan texts than N. L. Westergaard's Zendavesta (Copenhagen, 1854), by incorporating numerous smaller texts and fragments which were less accessible, sometimes even unpublished, and often had not yet been critically edited. Moreover, Bartholomae did not depend solely upon the text as edited by Geldner, but upon the manuscript tradition itself as given in Geldner's critical apparatus, which at times contains better readings than those printed in Geldner's text. On the whole the Wörterbuch is characterized by a felicitous combination of philological and linguisti

SULTAN ABDULMECID, (1823-1861).
[A ROYAL TRAVEL TO RUMELIA] Seyâhatnâme-i Hûmâyun: Sultan Abdülmecid'in 1262 senesinde Rumeli vilâyetleri seyahatini havîdir.
Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Paperback. Chipped on margins. Some owner notes. Otherwise a good copy. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 18 cm). In Ottoman script. 32 p. This rare book includes the royal travel of Sultan Abdülmecid in 1262 AH [1846 AD] to Roumelia. From Edirne, Abdülmecid proceeded to Eski Zagra (Stara Zagora), Kizanlik (Kazanluk), Gabrova (Gabrovo), Tirnova (Turnovo), Rusçuk (Ruse), Silistre (Silistra), and Varna. The route of the 1846 tour followed closely, except in reverse order, Mahmud II's tour of 1837. According to witness accounts, along the way, the sultan was greeted everywhere with poetic recitations and songs of praise and prayer, both in Ottoman and Bulgarian. The pride of place among welcoming parties invariably fell on students, of all creeds, most clad in white uniforms, some in solemn church-going attire, with flowers and green branches in their hands. At every stop, ceremonial cannon salvos were fired during the day and elaborate firework illuminations were performed at night. In the town of Kizanlik, known then as now for the most fragrant roses and the best rose oil, the sultan's visit coincided, possibly by design, with the rose harvesting season. So the locals sprinkled rose water and poured rose oil before the sultan's cavalcade. According to Hristo Stambolski, in the three days of the sultan's stay in town, no rose harvesting was done so that the whole area would be exquisitely scented in his honor. For his part, the sultan had doctors vaccinate all children against smallpox in public before sending each one off with a small gift of money. Even people with rare diseases were, on occasion, summoned to the sultan's presence so his doctors could cure them. The sublime visit caused the locals, who were unaccustomed to direct contact with the center of power, quite a stir. The most detailed account, albeit from a hostile source, relates the sultan's visit to Rusçuk, which, at four days, may have also been the longest. According to Nayden Gerov, the greeting ceremonies proceeded on a communal basis, with the Jews being placed closest to the town walls, next to them the Armenians, then the Bulgarians, and finally, the Muslims, situated the farthest from town, yet being the first to see and welcome the sultan. As the sultan approached, each group of youngsters would in turn sing for him, everyone else bowing profusely. Based on Gerov's description, it seems that Abdülmecid was dressed in a slightly more luxurious fashion than during state ceremonies in Istanbul. ((Source: Sultan Abdülmecid's Tour of Rumelia and the Trope of Love by Stephanov). The sultan began to travel by the way of the gate of Yedikule in Istanbul in May 6, 1846. He followed the way of Ayastefanos, Silivri, Çorlu, Burgaz, Edirne, Zagra-i Atik, Kizanli, Trnova, Rusçuk, Silistre, Rusçuk, Shumnu, and Varna and came back to Istanbul by way of the sea on June 14, 1846. During this travel, the Sultan listened to people's problems and ordered the authorities to be solved with those problems. He received successful military and administrative authorities in settlements on the way of travel and rewarded them. He also received the governors of Serbia, Eflak and Bogdan, and the representatives of foreign states. With this travel, the Sultan aimed to strengthen the connection to the center of people and administrators in provinces. Özege 17910. First Edition.

HAKAN ERTUGRAL.
History of chemistry in ancient Turks.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 176 p. Generally, outside of the academic word, nomads are not considered as the part of the civilization process. Most of the times, due to the Eurocentric thoughts that were developed in the 19th century, scientific and technological improvements of the humanity were considered unique to Europe. Therefore, other people that were conquered by European armies were thought that they were completely out of the civilization process and the lived as 'barbarians' because they did not live or think like Europeans. According to this view, if they will civilize or they can be considered as 'developed nation', they had to live like Europeans, at least, they had to have same cultural attitudes or they must mimic. This bias made hard to understand how other cultures lived and what they developed in their material culture. However, during the 20th century, this linear and positivist understanding of history have been changed. In this book, first of all intellectual process on scientific progress was evaluated and then, the place where the Turks could be placed in this progress was examined.

HAYM Niccola Francesco.
Biblioteca italiana.
