‎A prized possession of the Cistercian convent of Marienbrunn in Rulle near Osnabruck in northern Germany was its richly illuminated gradual dating to c. 1300, which is of great significance in the history of medieval art for several reasons. With 52 historiated initials iconographically complex in their literary quotations from the liturgy, the manuscript ranks as one of the most lavishly decorated books of its type to survive. Painted in an elegant courtly Gothic style, it is ascribed in a prefatory inscription to the nun Gisela von Kerssenbrock, who wrote, notated, and decorated the manuscript "with golden letters and beautiful images." Such an encyclopedic listing of a scribe-artist's labors is unparalleled in medieval scribal colophons. The high quality of the miniatures ranks her among the most gifted women artists of the Middle Ages. Gisela is depicted in two self-portraits within the manuscript, in one of which she is leading the nuns of Rulle in singing the Christmas hymn, visual evidence that she was the choirmistress at this convent. The manuscript's images reflect the intellectual ambience of encloistered nuns who were steeped in the annual liturgical cycle of feasts with its associated bible readings, theological commentary, sermons, music, dramatic ritual, and artistic decoration. As it was used in the nuns' daily celebration of the mass, the book is an eloquent witness of the communal religious life of medieval women rather than their private meditations or mystical experiences.This study explores the imagery and texts associated with major feasts of the liturgical year and the novel ways in which music and text are woven into the artistic program of Gisela's manuscript. In particular, her book shows the seminal importance of the Easter celebration for convent life, as well over half of its illustrations are clustered in the Easter season; and the manuscript repeatedly gives artistic expression to the nuns' hopes of heaven. ‎Of all the Old Testament books, the Book of Job remains acutely contemporary today. Written between the 6th and 3rd c. B.C., it deals with subjects such as the presence of evil in the world, the misery, the quest for justice, the faith, and the behavior of people when they face sudden twists and turns of life. It seems that the ancient text had been illustrated since the Early Christian period because of its fascinating novel-like narrative style. In her own study on the Book of Job, Stella Papadaki-Oekland probes into all the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts of the illustrated Greek text. The number of miniature illustrations included in these fifteen manuscripts, dating from the 9th to the 16th century, comes to more than 1800 of which 2/3 of the about 380 illustrated herein are previously unpublished manuscript images. The book is an unabridged version with minor changes of Papadaki-Oekland?s Inaugural Dissertation at Heidelberg University (1979) and is published posthumously by her daughters, Helen-Aina and Astrid-Zoe -in homage to Byzantine Art. ‎The present volume analyzes the functions of landscape imagery within medieval Northern European manuscript illumination, and also takes into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. This book proposes a new methodological framework for the study of medieval landscape imagery, by analyzing the functions of landscape imagery within Northern European manuscript illumination. Taking a historicist approach, this study explores landscape imagery within a broad range of specific manuscript contexts, taking into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. Organized into three sections, this study will look at how landscape functioned as ornament, didactic tool (space) and political tool (place). The first section looks at the role that landscape imagery had in the hierarchy of book decoration, and how it responded to late medieval mnemonic systems and devotional practices. It also addresses the emergence of landscape as a form of ornamental elaboration, sometimes as a means to appeal to specific aesthetic criteria, or as a way to create extra-textual associations to augment the message of the text. The second section is concerned with landscape within encyclopedic and allegorical manuscripts, and will analyze how artists constructed space to communicate specific lessons or ideas, for example to frame debates about the role of agricultural labor or to present the dynastic ambitions of the Burgundian court. Finally, the third section explores the visualization of the political and economic landscape of late medieval Europe, particularly focusing on how landscape was structured to respond issues of status, power and identity not only in works created for the landed nobility but within manuscripts made for urban patrons as well. Concentrating on manuscripts from Paris, Northern France and Flanders from the late thirteenth to the early sixteenth centuries, this book will offer new insights as it contextualizes the emergence of landscape painting in the late middle ages. ‎These three volumes catalogue the extensive corpus of mycological drawings in the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Executed mostly in watercolour between 1625 and 1630 and depicting fungi native to Umbria and the environs of Rome, they constitute the first sustained attempt to survey all the larger fungi of a region, recording in detail the stages of their growth. Laden with notes on colour, smell, taste, weight, season and the locality in which the specimens had been found, the almost six hundred folios were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of Europe?s first scientific academy, the Accademia dei Lincei. They were acquired by Cassiano dal Pozzo after Cesi?s death and were greatly admired by those who saw them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thought to have been lost until their rediscovery in 1979 in the library of the Institut de France in Paris, the drawings are also remarkable for their pioneering use of the microscope, a novel instrument given to Cesi in 1624 by Galileo and used throughout the pages of these manuscripts to enhance the direct observation of nature. Also included are drawings of fungi commissioned by Cassiano and his brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, and an early set of copies of the Cesi originals in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Each drawing is reproduced in colour with accompanying text, and two introductory essays discuss the scientific investigations and collecting activities of Cesi and Cassiano and the importance of these drawings in the history of science and art. ‎This volume gathers together the major essays of the late Frank Ephraim Talmage, who served as professor in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto until his death in 1988. In fact, international contacts across frontiers have been with us for centuries. Humans were wandering nomads before becoming traveling salespeople who built towns and countries. The European invention of the printed book and the appearance of printers and publishers made an important contribution to the scientific, cultural and intellectual development of the continent. Les manuscrits de la bibliotheque capitulaire presentent un interet particulier, car le fonds manuscrit provient surtout des donations effectuees par les archeveques et les chanoines a la fin du XIVe et au debut du XVe siecle. La plus remarquable est celle de l?archeveque Guy de Roye (1390-1409), qui legue quelque 160 volumes a la bibliotheque capitulaire, mais la bibliotheque de Guillaume Fillastre, cardinal-pretre de Saint-Marc, rassemblee pendant ses sejours a Constance et en Italie aux environs de 1416-1418 est aussi du plus grand interet, car elle apparait comme la toute premiere manifestation de l?humanisme en France. C?est ainsi que se trouve rassemble a Reims un ensemble exceptionnel de reliures du XIVe et XVe siecle, moment cle dans l?histoire de la reliure. Ce nouveau catalogue offre aux chercheurs la matiere d?une reflexion renouvelee sur cette importante periode de mutation.‎

‎Eerder dan de ideeen van grote wetenschappers, filosofen of schrijvers in de verf te zetten, en eerder dan de uitvinding die de machinale reproductie van die ideeen mogelijk maakte op zich te bewieroken, wil deze studie aandacht vragen voor de mannen en vrouwen die deze ideeen in de periode van het handgedrukte boek daadwerkelijk gematerialiseerd en verspreid hebben. Dit onderzoek naar een zeventiende-eeuwse drukkersfamilie toont aan dat het mogelijk was om gedurende generaties overeind te blijven in een moeilijke en kapitaalintensieve sector. Ondanks oorlogen en economische crisissen wisten de Verdussens door een mengeling van voorzichtigheid, flexibiliteit, durf, volharding, imitatie en natuurlijk ook geluk, hun bedrijf uit te bouwen tot een belangrijke speler in de katholieke wereld. Hieronymus Verdussen was de eerste van zijn familie: hij begon omstreeks 1589 in Antwerpen een uitgeverij-drukkerij-boekwinkel. Vele nazaten waren werkzaam in de boekenbranche, tot in de 19e eeuw aan toe. Hun handelscontacten strekten zich tot ver over de landgrenzen heen, hetgeen de Verdussens tot een van de interessantste uitgeversfamilies van de Zuidelijke Nederlanden maakt. In juni jl. verdedigde Stijn Van Rossem zijn proefschrift over deze familie Verdussen. Hij concentreert zich op de 17e eeuw: ?Ondanks oorlogen en economische crisissen wisten de Verdussens door een mengeling van voorzichtigheid, flexibiliteit, durf, volharding, imitatie en natuurlijk ook geluk, hun bedrijf uit te bouwen tot een belangrijke speler in de katholieke wereld?. Van Rossem noemt de Verdussens ?informatiehandelaars?. Omdat de familie zo lang in het boekenvak actief is gebleven, is een belangrijk deel van het archiefmateriaal bewaard gebleven. Van Rossem behandelt echter alleen de periode ten tijde van het Spaans bestuur van de Zuidelijke Nederlanden sinds de val van Antwerpen (1685) tot het begin van de Spaanse Successieoorlog (1702). Hij laat zien wat hun strategische keuzes waren, hoe hun bedrijf was georganiseerd, hoe hun fonds er uitzag en hoe zij hun boeken aan de man probeerden te brengen.‎
