‎Repertoire des monasteres armeniens,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1993 Hardback, 266 p., 15,5 x 24,5. ISBN 9782503503295.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1992 Paperback, 280 p., 15,5 x 24,5. ISBN 9782503502540.‎

‎Hellenists know the services that can be rendered by the Repertoire des catalogues de manuscrits grecs of Marcel Richard. It is an indispensable heuristic tool but also a witness of the development of codicology and a witness of history. Such a tool was lacking for specialists of Armenian manuscripts, philologists, linguists, and art historians. The Repertoire des bibliotheques et des catalogues de manuscrits armeniens publishes, for the first time, all the libraries, public and private, known to possess Armenian manuscripts. For each, it gives the catalogue or catalogues published and, if appropriate, an indication of the content of the manuscripts and their origin.

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2003 Hardback, 212 p., 100 b/w ill. + 100 colour ill., + ills., 21 x 30. ISBN 9782503510446.‎

‎Introducing the Lambeth Bible. A Study of Text and Imagery,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, VIII+320 p., 89 b/w ill. + 35 colour ill., 22 x 29. ISBN 9782503515113.‎

‎This study of the two-volume Lambeth Bible, one of the premier Romanesque giant bibles, concerns itself with its textual makeup as well as its magnificent illumination. It reports the results of research on texts and imagery found in over a hundred English and continental Romanesque Bibles. Comparative study of the prefatory materials in these Bibles yielded significant new understandings of their importance and represents a major conclusion of this study. They are important aids in establishing places of origin of biblical manuscripts and in the study of the illumination chosen for them. Exhaustive study of the prologues, chapter lists, and other miscellaneous texts in both volumes of the Lambeth Bible and other English Bibles, has helped to establish that the Lambeth Bible was not made at St. Albans or at Christ Church, Canterbury, two of the sites often suggested for its production. Six beautiful miniatures and thirty-one historiated initials remain in the Lambeth Bible so examination of their iconography is a major aspect of this book. This study includes both a search for visual and textual models for the imagery used in the Lambeth Bible and an investigation of the significance of those subjects in the twelfth century. In a surprising number of cases a relationship existed between the prologue preceding a biblical book and the imagery with which it was illuminated. Thus what initially seemed to be isolated instances of drawing inspiration from the prologues was in fact a customary practice of the makers of the Lambeth Bible. Languages : French, English.‎

‎Singing with Angels Liturgy, Music, and Art in the Gradual of Gisela von Kerssenbrock,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, VIII+384 p., 124 b/w ill. + 44 colour ill., 21 x 27,5. ISBN 9782503516806.‎

‎A prized possession of the Cistercian convent of Marienbrunn in Rulle near Osnabruck in northern Germany was its richly illuminated gradual dating to c. 1300, which is of great significance in the history of medieval art for several reasons. With 52 historiated initials iconographically complex in their literary quotations from the liturgy, the manuscript ranks as one of the most lavishly decorated books of its type to survive. Painted in an elegant courtly Gothic style, it is ascribed in a prefatory inscription to the nun Gisela von Kerssenbrock, who wrote, notated, and decorated the manuscript "with golden letters and beautiful images." Such an encyclopedic listing of a scribe-artist's labors is unparalleled in medieval scribal colophons. The high quality of the miniatures ranks her among the most gifted women artists of the Middle Ages. Gisela is depicted in two self-portraits within the manuscript, in one of which she is leading the nuns of Rulle in singing the Christmas hymn, visual evidence that she was the choirmistress at this convent. The manuscript's images reflect the intellectual ambience of encloistered nuns who were steeped in the annual liturgical cycle of feasts with its associated bible readings, theological commentary, sermons, music, dramatic ritual, and artistic decoration. As it was used in the nuns' daily celebration of the mass, the book is an eloquent witness of the communal religious life of medieval women rather than their private meditations or mystical experiences. This study explores the imagery and texts associated with major feasts of the liturgical year and the novel ways in which music and text are woven into the artistic program of Gisela's manuscript. In particular, her book shows the seminal importance of the Easter celebration for convent life, as well over half of its illustrations are clustered in the Easter season; and the manuscript repeatedly gives artistic expression to the nuns' hopes of heaven. ‎Bohemian and Moravian Graduals (1420-1620),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, 641 p., 20 b/w ill. + 50 colour ill., 22 x 28. ISBN 9782503517186.‎

‎This book is primarily a catalogue of those nearly-intact extant books containing the full music of the Mass made between the date of the Bohemian Revolution (July 1419) and the Battle of the White Mountain (November 1620). Two principal religious factions were active in Bohemia and Moravia during the period. The larger, the Utraquists, took communion in both bread and wine. The Roman Catholics, fewer but still numerous, followed the then relatively recent practice of using bread only. While graduals are important sources for the liturgy practised by Utraquists and Roman Catholics, many of them are also of great interest artistically and historically. Some of the more beautiful books were produced for use by the literary societies, later incorporated as guilds, which were responsible for the music in their churches. The information the books contain about the membership of the guilds, containing as it did most of the social strata of the towns, gives important information about the contemporary social structure and about the strength of Utraquism. Individual guild members often sponsored a page at the beginning of a mass set which was profusely decorated. The quality of the art and the evolution in the iconography can be appreciated in the book's 50 colour plates. Languages : English.‎

‎Byzantine Illuminated Manuscripts of the Book of Job A Preliminary Study of the Miniature Illustrations. Its Origin and Development,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, 478 p., 127 b/w ill. + 285 colour ill., 23 x 30. ISBN 9782503532325.‎

‎Of all the Old Testament books, the Book of Job remains acutely contemporary today. Written between the 6th and 3rd c. B.C., it deals with subjects such as the presence of evil in the world, the misery, the quest for justice, the faith, and the behavior of people when they face sudden twists and turns of life. It seems that the ancient text had been illustrated since the Early Christian period because of its fascinating novel-like narrative style. In her own study on the Book of Job, Stella Papadaki-Oekland probes into all the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts of the illustrated Greek text. The number of miniature illustrations included in these fifteen manuscripts, dating from the 9th to the 16th century, comes to more than 1800 of which 2/3 of the about 380 illustrated herein are previously unpublished manuscript images. The book is an unabridged version with minor changes of Papadaki-Oekland?s Inaugural Dissertation at Heidelberg University (1979) and is published posthumously by her daughters, Helen-Aina and Astrid-Zoe -in homage to Byzantine Art. The fifteen Byzantine Illuminated Manuscript Illustrations of the 'Book of Job' studied, illustrated and discussed are: Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Rome: cod. Vat. gr. 749; cod. Vat. gr. 751; cod. Vat. gr. 1231 and cod. Vat. Pal. gr.230 - The Monastery of St. John the Theologian, Isle of Patmos: cod. Patmos 171 - Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, Venezia: cod. Marc. gr. 538 - Monastery of St. Catherine, Sinai, Egypt: cod. Siena 3 - Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem and All Palestine, Jerusalem: MS. Taphou 5 - Monastery of Vatopedi, Mount Athos: Vatopedi 590 - Monastery Magisti (Great) Lavra, Mount Athos: Lavra B100 - Byzantine and Christian Museum, Athens: MS. 62 - Bodleian Library, Oxford: MS. Barocci 201 and MS. Laud gr. 86 - Bibliothegue nationale de France, Paris: MS. gr. 134 and MS. gr. 135 - National Library of Russia, St. Petersburg: MS gr. 382 (former folio of Taphou 5) The study of the Septuagint Book of Job in Byzantine tradition include comparative analysis of the interrelationship of the individual miniature cycles, their general arrangement and artistic character, the origin and development as well as its contents and significance in the literary and popular tradition. Finally, the six Comparative Tables presented at the end of the volume provide the reader for the first time a complete cross reference interrelationship between the individual 1800 images of the 15 manuscripts and 'Sir Lancelot C. L. Brenton's' English translation of the Septuagint 'Book of Job' passages. Further examples of images discussed herein of early Christian 'Job' representations include: Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, Rome, MS.Reg.gr.1 ? known as the Bible of Queen Christina of Sweden; Bibliotheque nationale de France, Paris, MS gr. 510, MS syr. 341-the Syriac Bible and MS.gr. 923- Sacra Parallela; Biblioteca Nazionale 'Vittorio Emanuele III', Naples, Coptic MS IB 18, Catacomb of the Via Latina, Rome and the Sarcophagus of Junius Bassus, Basilica di San Pietro, Rome. Furthermore, the book is of invaluable importance due to its methodological approach. As the leading art historian Hans Belting points out, the study of Stella Papadaki-Oekland calls in question Kurt Weitzmann's rigid theory about the process of the Byzantine illuminated manuscripts production. There?s no doubt that, even though it was written a lot of years ago, this remains the most complete and comprehensive study about the Book of Job in Byzantine art. Languages : English.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Paperback, 272 p., 14 b/w ill., 15,6 x 23,4. ISBN 9782503532042.‎

‎Space, Place and Ornament: the Function of Landscape in Medieval Manuscript Illumination,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2014 Paperback, 214 p., 85 b/w ill. + 16 colour ill., 220 x 280 mm, ISBN 9782503529776.‎

‎The present volume analyzes the functions of landscape imagery within medieval Northern European manuscript illumination, and also takes into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. This book proposes a new methodological framework for the study of medieval landscape imagery, by analyzing the functions of landscape imagery within Northern European manuscript illumination. Taking a historicist approach, this study explores landscape imagery within a broad range of specific manuscript contexts, taking into account the ideological and the economic milieus in which they were produced. Organized into three sections, this study will look at how landscape functioned as ornament, didactic tool (space) and political tool (place). The first section looks at the role that landscape imagery had in the hierarchy of book decoration, and how it responded to late medieval mnemonic systems and devotional practices. It also addresses the emergence of landscape as a form of ornamental elaboration, sometimes as a means to appeal to specific aesthetic criteria, or as a way to create extra-textual associations to augment the message of the text. The second section is concerned with landscape within encyclopedic and allegorical manuscripts, and will analyze how artists constructed space to communicate specific lessons or ideas, for example to frame debates about the role of agricultural labor or to present the dynastic ambitions of the Burgundian court. Finally, the third section explores the visualization of the political and economic landscape of late medieval Europe, particularly focusing on how landscape was structured to respond issues of status, power and identity not only in works created for the landed nobility but within manuscripts made for urban patrons as well. Concentrating on manuscripts from Paris, Northern France and Flanders from the late thirteenth to the early sixteenth centuries, this book will offer new insights as it contextualizes the emergence of landscape painting in the late middle ages. ‎The Paper Museum ('Museo Cartaceo') is a collection of some 10,000 drawings and prints assembled during the seventeenth century by the Roman patron and collector, Cassiano dal Pozzo, and his younger brother, Carlo Antonio. It represents one of the most significant attempts before the age of photography to embrace human knowledge in visual form, documenting ancient art and culture, architecture and topography, natural history and social customs. The 160 drawings catalogued in this volume are derived from five ancient manuscripts: the famous Vatican Vergil, the so-called 'Roman' Vergil, the Vatican Terence, and the less well-known Palatine Agrimensores, all in the Vatican Library, and from a fifth codex, now lost, known as the Chronography or Calendar of the year 354. The bulk of the drawings were copied for Cassiano between 1632 and 1634 for the purpose of studying both the characters depicted and the allied evidence of ancient costume and artefacts. By the later seventeenth century, when Pietro Santi Bartoli executed the last group of drawings in the present volume for Carlo Antonio, manuscript illustrations had come to be cherished as much for their rarity as examples of ancient painting as for their documentary value. Introductory essays provide an overview of the dal Pozzo commissions, the manuscripts and their history down to Cassiano's day, as well as their study in the wider context of classical scholarship through to the eighteenth century. All the drawings are reproduced in colour at full page, with accompanying descriptions of the subjects or relevant ancient verses in modern translation and brief commentaries. Languages : English.‎

‎Latin inscriptions found on buildings, tombstones, altars and votive monuments form a rich source of information for historians about classical Rome. By the early seventeenth century, ancient epigraphy had become a highly developed branch of learning, and the drawings of inscriptions preserved in the Paper Museum offer a fascinating insight into this earlier world of scholarship ? in some cases providing our only record of the piece being illustrated. The drawings in this volume cover a wide chronological range and provide details about Roman law, the Roman army and officials of the Roman Empire as well as aspects of Roman life overlooked in literary sources. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1997 Hardback, 344 p., incl. 282 ills., with 116 in colour, 22 x 28,5. ISBN 9781872501888.‎

‎The first volume to appear in the Natural History series catalogues a group of spectacular drawings of citrus fruit in watercolour and gouache, most of which were commissioned to illustrate Giovanni Battista Ferrari's Hesperides, an ambitious attempt at a complete taxonomy and classification of the entire citrolgical world, which was published in Rome in 1646. Cassiano dal Pozzo played a fundamental role in this project: it was he who commissioned and supplied most of the drawings and then arranged for them to be engraved for Ferrari's projected work. The citrus drawings - grouped in the Catalogue under the headings of citrons, lemons, oranges, pummelos, hybrids, monstro sities and unidentified citrus fruit - are reproduced in full colour and are accompanied by a wealth of comparative material which includes the Hesperides engravings, additional drawings and photographs of actual specimens, mainly of the monstrous kind. In addition to detailed scientific descriptions of the specimens themselves, the catalogue also gives art historical information on watermarks, annotations, types of mount, provenance and literature. The introductory essays explain Cassiano's method of gathering information from a network of correspondents around Europe and consider the relationship between these drawings and other natural history subjects commissioned by Cassiano. The authors discuss the work of the artists involved in the project and assess the major contribution made the classification of citrus fruit by the collaborative efforts of Cassiano of Ferrari. ‎Fungi, three volumes catalogue the extensive corpus of mycological drawings in the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, 3 vol., 1028 pages., 24 b/w ill. + 901 colour ill., 21 x 28. *fine condition! ISBN 9781905375059.‎

‎These three volumes catalogue the extensive corpus of mycological drawings in the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Executed mostly in watercolour between 1625 and 1630 and depicting fungi native to Umbria and the environs of Rome, they constitute the first sustained attempt to survey all the larger fungi of a region, recording in detail the stages of their growth. Laden with notes on colour, smell, taste, weight, season and the locality in which the specimens had been found, the almost six hundred folios were commissioned by Federico Cesi (1585-1630), founder of Europe?s first scientific academy, the Accademia dei Lincei. They were acquired by Cassiano dal Pozzo after Cesi?s death and were greatly admired by those who saw them in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Thought to have been lost until their rediscovery in 1979 in the library of the Institut de France in Paris, the drawings are also remarkable for their pioneering use of the microscope, a novel instrument given to Cesi in 1624 by Galileo and used throughout the pages of these manuscripts to enhance the direct observation of nature. Also included are drawings of fungi commissioned by Cassiano and his brother Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo now in the Royal Library, Windsor Castle, and an early set of copies of the Cesi originals in the library of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Each drawing is reproduced in colour with accompanying text, and two introductory essays discuss the scientific investigations and collecting activities of Cesi and Cassiano and the importance of these drawings in the history of science and art. ‎Originally formed by Prince Federico Cesi in the early seventeenth century and later acquired by Cassiano, these drawings constitute the first truly scientific study of fossilized woods and are executed with great finesse, skill and detail. This new Catalogue Raisonne, Part III in the series on Natural History, is based on the collection originally formed by Prince Federico Cesi in the ear- ly 17th century and later acquired by Cassiano. These drawings constitute the first truly scientific study of fossilized woods and are executed with such finesse, skill and detail that they will be of immense interest both to art-historians and to historians of science. The drawings, the majority of which have remained unstudied and unpublished until now, include specimens of wood and animal fossils, ammonites and concretions, pyrits and baked clays, as well as a series of field drawings giving the sites where these specimens were found. The introductory essays discuss the background to Cesi's project as well as the importance of the drawings to the history of seventeenth- century culture and science. 'Scott & Freedberg's book will prove to be an important resource for all those interested in the history of geology, and it is a must for all university libraries.' (Howard J. ‎Apples of Gold in Settings of Silver : Studies in Medieval Jewish Exegesis and Polemics.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1999 Hardback, 463 pages., ENG.,235 x 160 x 35 mm, NEW. ISBN 9780888448149.‎

‎This volume gathers together the major essays of the late Frank Ephraim Talmage, who served as professor in the Department of Near Eastern Studies at the University of Toronto until his death in 1988. Talmage's research interests emerged from his study of David Kimhi on whose family and intellectual world he became the leading authority. Talmage's study of Joseph Kimhi's biblical purism, newly translated for this volume, offers, for instance, a fresh look at the polemicist and exegete through the prism of grammatical works. Of the exegetical studies included in this volume, perhaps the best known is 'Apples of Gold', a wide-ranging exploration of the power of allegory in medieval Jewish thought that has proved a standard in its field. 'Trauma at Tortosa', another seminal, deeply-felt essay, analyzes Abraham Rimoch's commentary on the Book of Psalms in order to understand the exegete's state of mind and his psychological withdrawal in the wake of the disputation at Tortosa in 1413-1414, a painful event that led to mass conversions of Jews to Christianity. The polemical studies in the collection focus on Jewish-Christian relations in Spain, Provence and Bohemia. Several of these studies are here translated for the first time. Talmage was one of the few scholars to have worked on Bohemian Jewry, and his writings offer new insights into a fascinating Jewish community influenced by both Ahskenazi and Sephardic traditions, and a world in which popular religious sentiment and intellectual discourse were frequently at loggerheads. A bibliography of Talmage's writings and comprehensive indexes complete the volume. Languages : English.‎

‎Cogs, Cargoes, and Commerce Maritime Bulk Trade in Northern Europe, 1150-1400. Papers presented at a conference entitled, 'New markets for new goods: the emergence of large scale trade in northern Europe, 1150-1400, held in Malmo, Sweden, 19-21 February 1997,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2003 Paperback, XXII+286 pages., 15 b/w tables, 21 raster ill., 18 b/w line art.*NEW ISBN 9780888448156.‎

‎There are several theories as to when, why and how international bulk-trade started in medieval northern Europe. They may all be wrong in the sense that it was there all the time; there was never a dramatic change or 'commercial revolution' but rather a comparatively peaceful and steady growth. It is true that trade in bulk commodities entered a phase of expansion around the middle of the twelfth century, but this development built, to a very large extent, on pre-existing structures. Trade in basic commodities such as timber, grain, salt and pottery that had been going on since time immemorial now expanded both in terms of volumes and of geography, while new important items - for instance beer, stone and various stone products - were gradually introduced into the system. Ships, trade routes and commercial networks changed, old centres declined and new ones emerged, but by and large nothing of this came about in a 'revolutionary' fashion, althought the long-term effects were profound. Using a wide range of new or previously ignored sources, the authors of this volume challenge a number of long-established patterns of thought in medieval historiography. Focusing attention firmly on the basic commodities of everyday life, rather than on objects of more or less conspicuous consumption, the articles shed light on new and important aspects of the expansion of trade in northern Europe between 1150 and 1400. Eight of the articles deal with trade, transport and volumes of one or more of the most important bulk commodities of the period, and the ninth is dedicated to the development of the most important means of transport, the cargo ship. ‎Religion, Text, and Society in Medieval Spain and Northern Europe Essays in Honor of J.N. Hillgarth,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2002 Hardback, XX+373 p., 15 x 23. ISBN 9780888448163.‎

‎The scholarship of Jocelyn Nigel Hillgarth touches the whole history of medieval Spain, the history of Christianity and its institutional practices, and the medieval intellectual achievement. The essays by students and friends gathered here honour the remarkable reach of that lifework and the sympathies in which it remains rooted. Essays by David Abulafia, Anthony Bonner, Harvey Hames, and Charles H. Lohr explore the writings of the Majorcan scholastic, reformer and missionary, Ramon Lull. The broader history of Spain may be found in Jacques Fontaine's consideration of the eponymous founder of Spain, Hispalus; in Manuel C. Diaz y Diaz's discussion of royal liturgy in Visigothic Spain; in Lucy K. Pick's examination of the tenth-century queen-regent of Leon, Elvira; and in Mark Meyerson's exploration of the fate of the Jews of Morvedre (Sagunto) in 1348. Other papers study the complex interaction between the institutional structures of the church and the spirit that animated them: Clarissa Atkinson compares the biographies of Anselm of Canterbury and Christina of Markyate to uncover differing sources of authority. Giles Constable argues that the various historical and legendary lives of Odo Arpinus - nobleman, Cluniac prior, and crusader in Old French epic - reveal an underlying coherence. In a study of Dubrovnik's Dalmatian martyrs, Richard Gyug shows how ecclesiastical politics as well as economic and religious rivalry work to determine the structures of civic identity. Phyllis Pobst examines the archbishop Eudes Rigaud's record of his visitations in the diocese of Rouen, and William Lundell studies the response of the Carthusian order in the face of schism. Texts lie at the heart of a concluding group of four essays: the writings of John Cassian on the relationship of the eremitic and cenobitic lives in Stephen Driver's work; the Norman history of Dudo of St-Quentin in Leah Shupkow's essay; the translation of philosophical texts into architectures of stone at Chartres in Edouard Jeauneau's article; and the Christian use of Muslim commentaries on the Latin translations of the Qur'an in Thomas E. Burman's paper. Languages : English.‎

‎Anselm and Abelard Investigations and Juxtapositions,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Paperback, VIII+256 p., 15 x 23. ISBN 9780888448194.‎

‎Anselm and Abelard offers a wide-ranging collection of papers on two of the most well-known medieval thinkers, Anselm of Canterbury and Peter Abelard. Drawn from a conference held in Stuttgart in 2004, the sixteen papers by leading scholars in the field focus on the lives and thought of these two thinkers. The majority of the contributions expore the intellectual world of the medieval west in the century between the mid-eleventh and the mid-twelfth, a period crucial in forming intellectual frameworks that would shape subsequent western thought. The first eight papers focus on Anselm, the second eight on comparisons and contrasts with Abelard. All of Anselm's and most of Abelard's major works are examined in the course of the collection. Contributors explore key philosophical themes of thruth, original sin, logic, reason. Others tease out the often intricate networks between intellectual communities in the period to reveal fresh insights into the development of both Anselm and Abelard's thought. This includes consideration of the physical way in which Anselm's corpus was collected and preserved. Connections between literary artifice and theological observation are investigated, as are Anselm's notion of gift and western intellectual attitudes towards Jewish and Islamic thought. Outside the mid-twelfth century the use made of Anselm's thought and historical existence by thirteenth century scholars and by the post-reformation Church in england are also considered. This is an important and thought-provoking collection, which shows the continuing inspiration to be drawn from both Anselm and Abelard as well as providing a thorough investigation of the contexts in which their thought developed, evolved, was expressed ans was understood by contemporaries and subsequent generations. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XIV+289 p., 15 b/w ill., 15 x 23. ISBN 9780888448200.‎

‎This collection of essays has been assembled as a tribute to the eminent ecclesiastical historian Dr. Margaret Aston, Fellow of the British Academy. Many of the contributors are themselves distinguished scholars of the late medieval and early modern Church. The twelve essays reflect the extraordinary breadth of Dr. Aston's interests, reaching beyond history into the cognate disciplines of literature, theology, art history and codicology. Colin Richmond's personal appreciation is followed by Anne Hudson's engrossing study of how John Wyclif gained access to the books that he used and cited. Essays by Ann Eljenholm Nichols, Elizabeth Eisenstein and Richard Marks all focus, in different ways, on the relationship between religious text and image. Three biographical essays - by Jeremy Catto, Alison McHardy and Maureen Jurkowski - describe widely varying careers in the late medieval church, from the archbishop of Canterbury to an obscure Lollard preacher. Lollardy is the subject also of Norman Tanner's essay on the conciliar treatment of heresy and the condemnation of Wyclif's teachings, while Ian Forrest considers the role of defamation and heresy in late medieval social life. Andrew Hope compares reputation and reality in the career of the early Tudor reformer John Colet, and John Bossy examines the devotional compositions of the Elizabethan nobleman, Lord Henry Howard. While providing ample testimony of Aston?s influence, these essays are also of considerable - even seminal ?-importance in their own right, and deserve a place on the shelf of any serious student of the period. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2013 Paperback, 196 pages ., 18 x 26,5. ISBN 9782503548005.‎

Languages : French.‎

‎, Brepols Publishers, 2005 Paperback, VIII 517 p., 210 x 270 mm, Languages: French . ISBN 9782503518114.‎

‎Much attention is paid nowadays to the remarkable increase in the speed of communication that is transforming our planet into a global village. In fact, international contacts across frontiers have been with us for centuries. Humans were wandering nomads before becoming traveling salespeople who built towns and countries. They were naturally interested in what was going on next door. The European invention of the printed book and the appearance of printers and publishers made an important contribution to the scientific, cultural and intellectual development of the continent. The Low Countries, in particular Flanders with Dirk Martens and Christoffel Plantin Moretus among others, played a key role in this revolution, the value of which we still recognise today. This important event was the subject of a colloquium, with the title "Aspects of intellectual migration in sixteenth century Europe: Printers and publishers in Paris, Geneva and the Low countries", organised on 9 June 2000 by the Centre for European Culture under the auspices of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts.‎

‎Epigraphic Literacy and Christian Identity, Modes of Written Discourse in the Newly Christian European North.‎

‎, Brepols, 2012 Hardback,VI 273 p., 39 b/w ill., 15 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm, Languages: English. ISBN 9782503542942.‎

‎collection of nine essays deals with the role of epigraphic literacy within the newly introduced Christian culture and the developing tradition of literacy in Northern Europe. This volume examines the role of epigraphic literacy within the newly introduced Christian culture and the developing tradition of literacy in Northern Europe during the Viking Age and the High Middle Ages. The epigraphic material under scrutiny here originates from Scandinavia and North-West Russia ? two regions that were converted to Christianity around the turn of the first millennium. Besides traditional categories of epigraphic sources, such as monumental inscriptions on durable materials, the volume is concerned with more casual inscriptions on less permanent materials. The first part of the book discusses a form of monumental epigraphic literacy manifested on Scandinavian rune stones, with a particular focus on their Christian connections. The second part examines exchanges between Christian culture and ephemeral products of epigraphic literacy, as expressed through Scandinavian rune sticks, East Slavonic birchbark documents and church graffiti. The essays look beyond the traditional sphere of parchment literacy and the Christian discourse of manuscript sources in order to explore the role of epigraphic literacy in the written vernacular cultures of Scandinavia and North-West Russia.
