Edo Tokyo: Hyoshiya Ichirobe Hayashi-shi Yoshinaga First month 1684 But Third month 1680. A large woodcut map of Edo Tokyo with fine handcolouring on joined and folded paper. The map is breathtaking in its detail and features many paintings of important landmarks temples bridges and people who are often pictured working or fishing from boats on the waterways running through Tokyo. A stunning and very rare woodblock map beautifully and unusually handcoloured. Roads blocks buildings open areas canals and waterways are all vividly laid out on this huge and most impressive map. 123.5 by 149.5 cm. folded within paper covers folds to 28 by 18 cm now preserved in a fine clamshell box. A remarkably well preserved and very rare item with some light rubbing due to age and as to be expected. A bit of old worming or light soiling and occasional small repairs but in all quite astonishing in its quality and beautifully preserved with bright and vivid colour and detail. AN EXTRAORDINARY ITEM REMARKABLE FOR BOTH ITS CARTOGRAPHIC DETAIL AND ITS ARTISTIC BEAUTY. The wood block printing shows land tenures of Daimyo and Hatamoto. It also shows temples and shrines includes a distance chart and descriptive listing of Daimyo showing crests and halberds. There is also a inset of the eastern portion of Edo. Bloch (1890-1957) was an American librarian, bibliographer, and reform rabbi. Born in Dorbian, Lithuania, Bloch went to the U. S. In 1907. He taught at New York University from 1919 to 1928; from 1922 until his death he served as chaplain in several hospitals of the New York State Department of Mental Hygiene. His main work, however, was as head of the Jewish Division of the New York Public Library, a post which he held from 1923 to 1956; under his direction the Library developed as one of the major collections of Judaica in the United States. Bloch arranged many major exhibitions of Judaica there. Many of his bibliographical researches into the history of Hebrew printing were published by the Library, such as Hebrew Printing in Riva di Trento, [and] Early Hebrew Printing in Spain and Portugal. He also founded the quarterly Journal of Jewish Bibliography in 1938 and was its editor until 1943. In 1940 he was appointed to the publication committee of the Jewish Publication Society and a year later to the editorial board of the Jewish Apocryphal Literature Series; as a result of these connections he wrote On the Apocalyptic in Judaism and Of Making Many Books (1953; an annotated list of the books issued by the Jewish Publication Society, 18901952) . Cincinnati: The Bloch Publishing and Printing Co 1900. 432 i.e. 48pp. Original printed wrappers stapled 5.25 x 3 inches. Minor wear and toning small chip to three corners larger chip to top corner of front wrapper costing a couple of letters. Light foxing otherwise clean internally. Very good. An informative and seemingly unrecorded catalogue of Jewish books and publications issued by the Bloch Publishing and Printing Company of Cincinnati the oldest Jewish publishing firm in the United States just before the turn of the 20th century. The company was founded by Edward H. Bloch in 1854 and quickly grew into the leading publisher of Jewish material. The present work was published just a couple of years before the founder's son Charles H. Bloch moved the company to New York City and rebranded as The Jewish Book Concern operating the largest Jewish bookstore in the country. The present catalogue provides a clear picture of the breadth of the publishing house's offerings containing brief descriptions and prices for a large selection of Bibles prayer books primers catechisms grammars histories theological and philosophical texts lectures and sermons works in German novels juveniles music books and so forth. The proposed date for the publication comes from an advertisement on the rear wrapper for the Hebrew Almanac For the Year 5659. From Sept. 17 1898 To Sept. 5 1899. XVII; in a fragment, British Library MS Harley 78 (fol. 3r); and in a black-letter edition (London, Reyner Wolfe, 1553) from which this reprint is taken. "The political satire against the Duc des Luynes, according to Barbier, was the cause of the author's imprisonment in the Bastille where he died. The bibliography of the early French editions, as in the case of the more celebrated Menippean satire, does not appear to have been studied so that it would be difficult to say with just what celerity it was translated and published in English. However, the fact that it was translated is not necessarily an indication of the concern of Jacobean England with the internal affairs of France. Although this translation may have been in part intended as a commentary upon Buckingham and other 'favourites' of the King's Council, it was probably published principally because of its intrinsic wit and vigor." - Pforzheimer Library. <p><strong>Charming advertising wallet with perpetual calendar probably produced for a German carrier named Kaufmann & Glück illustrated with 6 compositions including 2 large ones printed on leather.</strong></p><p>A central paper flap contains the perpetual calendar with removable printed paper strips containing the days and months in French. It is illustrated with a figure of Hermes and a paddlewheel steamer. The reverse of the calendar features a large composition showing a trade scene with Muslim merchants and black people loading a Westerner's ship.<br />The leather back covers are each illustrated with a printed composition captioned in German Alter Handel and Neuer Handel for old and new trade.<br />The old trade scene shows ships being unloaded by men and transported by mules. The new trade scene shows the use of horse-drawn carts and wagons as well as a crane to load the boats. It features the Spedition<em> von Kaufmann & Glück</em> sign suggesting that this wallet may have been distributed as a promotional item.</p>

4to. (16), 265, (1) pp. With a large woodcut on the title-page showing a gardener at work with his tools, and about 800 woodcut illustrations in the text. About 700 show trees, fruit, edible and medicinal plants, while the rest show insects, a tick, coral, shells, various sea and land animals and a view of a pond with plants and birds. It includes a two-headed snake, dragon, griffin, and a few other mythical creatures. With all woodcuts coloured by a contemporary hand. Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards, richly blind-tooled in a panel design with two rolls (one alternating heads and coats of arms, the other with standing figures), a large acorn and other stamps; brass clasps and catch-plates with engraved decoration. Rare first dated edition of an extensively illustrated early herbal in contemporary hand-colour, with the title and most of the plant and animal names in Latin and German. The title-page is followed by a 13-page index of the Latin and German names. About 200 of the woodcuts are about half-page, while the last six pages show 16 small animal woodcuts per page. The Folger Library notes that F. W. E. Roth attributes this herbal to Adam Lonicer (1528-86) of Marburg and Frankfurt, who married Egenolph's daughter and became a partner in the firm after Egenolph died in 1555. The firm published herbals and related works under his name beginning in 1551. Egenolph published all three editions of the present herbal. VD 16 lists the undated one as ca. 1545 (citing only the Wellcome Library copy), which would make the present 1546 edition the second. Another appeared in 1552. Egenolph's successors were to become famous not only as printers but also as one of the largest and most important early typefoundries. The present book uses Roman and Italic for the Latin, but Fraktur and Schwabacher for the German, giving a good overview of the firm's stock of type at this early date. - This copy has early owner's inscriptions by the Nuremberg pharmacist Georg Volland (d. 1631) in Latin at the foot of the title-page and in Greek on the facing endleaf. - Binding worn; some browning and stains to interior, especially to the first and last leaves. Generally very good or better with occasional light edge chipping and rubbing some toning. The July 1927 issue good only with heavier chipping and reattached wrappers. <br /> <br /> Lovely assemblage of this publication from the the Times-Mirror Printing and Binding house being the official organ of the company. The Mirror Printing and Binding House was formed in 1873 and purchased the Los Angeles Times which it printed in 1984. Harry Chandler ran the Los Angeles Times from 1917-1944.<br /> <br /> Produced in a beautiful art deco style Three Minutes printed various blurbs and shorts about the printing trade prominent businessmen designers and printers such as Goudy events in the city of Los Angeles and more. Master printer Harry S. Stuff was editor at the time wrote most of the articles and oversaw the design. First edition, small 8vo (131 x 81 mm), [24], 112, 117-172pp., (i.e. 168pp., as 113-16 omitted in the pagination), mounted woodcut frontispiece of a male archer, early ownership signature to title partially erased, upper corner of D1 restored with a loss of a few letters which have been added in ms. blank lower corner of M3 repaired, occasional light soiling and staining, marbled endpapers, eighteenth-century green morocco, tooled in gilt, overall a very good copy. Written when he was sixty-six years old, this is probably the last book which Markham wrote, and is one of his scarcest. "The practical instruction which he proceeds to give to the would-be-archer, of the bow and its use, the shooting-glove, the string, the shaft, the steel of the arrow, the feather, and the arrow-head, is reminiscent of Asham and may indeed be derived from his Toxophilus."?Poynter. Only two other copies have appeared at auction over the last 70 years, the Macclesfield copy sold by Sotheby's 14th April 2005 lot 1311 ?6,600 and the Fox Pointe copy sold by Forum Auctions 10th July 2019 lot 104 ?5000. Approx. 120 pp unpaginated. colour-tinted decorated borders on most text and advertising leaves numerous colour plates numerous tipped-in colour plates & photochromes tipped-in colour printing samples and photo printing samples most still preserving original printed tissue guards. Contemporary limp burgundy calf covers marbled endpapers preserving the original embossed & decorated front softcovers raised lettering & chromolithograph illust. of the I.T.U. Union Printer’s sanatorium in Colorado Springs slightly shaken minor rubbing some edgewear still a VG copy. First edition thus of this lavishly produced souvenir for the International Typographical Union convention which originally formed in 1852 and who George Childs and Anthony Drexel founded their Union Printers Home for the “Aged and Sanatorium for Tuberculosis†in 1889. Henry Warnack details the circumstances and facilities of the Union Printers Home as well as the wards orderlies nurses doctors treatment and rehabilitation regimen of the Tuberculosis Sanatorium -- principal cause of death among union members at the time. Also included is a well-illustrated article by James Lynch detailing the efforts of the Typographical Union and Typesetters to secure an eight hour work day and the struggle against printers and owners to secure these rights. Mexico 1770. Very good. Small broadside approximately 12.25 x 8.25 inches. Minor wear a couple of small chips at edges. Light toning and dust soiling. This single-page production printed in double-column format in Roman and italic types shows a mid-18th-century change to the Catholic marriage service and is essentially a cancel to be inserted into the liturgy book. The place and date of publication are based on typography and watermark. This scarce example of job printing for the church in Mexico is not located by the standard bibliographies and OCLC locates only one copy at the Bridwell Library. unknown

San Luis Potosi Mx 1872. 22pp. on a folded folio sheet. An intriguing issue of the San Luis Potosi state newspaper La Sombra de Zaragoza produced in the late-Spring of 1872. The paper was issued at irregular intervals at the time but was most frequently issued as a four-page paper printed on a single large folio sheet. Such is not the case in the present issue. Most of the first two pages of the paper print regulations for brokers working in the plaza of San Luis Potosi including new prohibitions and tariffs. The last part of the last column prints a public notice of an estate auction and an advertisement for the sale of the Velez Printing House. Page two ends with "Imp. del Gobierno."<br /> <br /> The second leaf is entirely comprised of eight forms of type imposed in quarto format indicating pages 129-136 of some larger work. Further research reveals that this second leaf prints one gathering of a larger pamphlet which appears on the second leaf of several issues in the full run of La Sombra de Zaragoza consulted at the Beinecke Library. The pamphlet is entitled Arancel de Aduanas Maritimas y Fronterizas de los Estados-Unidos Mexicanos published by the authorities of the state of San Luis Potosi. In an instance of historical echo in present times the pamphlet pertains to maritime and border customs tariffs imposed by the Mexican government. The presence of one quarto sheet of a larger pamphlet tacked onto the second leaf of the state newspaper seems to indicate that the Mexican government in San Luis Potosi in the mid-19th century sometimes pre-empted the work of the printers at La Sombra de Zaragoza to produce larger government publications. As such the present issue is at one and the same time an original periodical produced by the press in San Luis Potosi and a handsome example of mid-19th-century Mexican job printing. unknown
