‎THE HOLY BIBLE CONTAINING THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE NEW: TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINAL TONGUES AND WITH THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY COMPARED AND REVISED.‎

‎Cambridge: Printed by John Baskerville Printer to the University 1763. 573 leaves. Royal folio. Full contemporary blue-black morocco faded to emerald spine gilt extra narrow gilt borders on boards marbled endsheets a.e.g. Fore-corners bumped joints a bit worn but not cracked lower fore- corners of several leaves exhibit an old ink stain with old mends to two corners but otherwise an attractive copy. The Baskerville Bible one of the highpoints of the imprint and indeed of all English Bible-making was printed in an edition of 1250 copies priced at four guineas. This copy of what Dibdin declared "one of the most beautifully printed books in the world" has the subscribers list in the third state concluding with the entry for Charles York. Such an ambitious undertaking stretched Baskerville's finances to their limits and of necessity in 1768 he remaindered 556 copies to the London bookseller R. Baldwin at 36s each. As late as 1771 Baldwin was advertising copies in sheets in the BIRMINGHAM GAZETTE priced at 3 guineas. "The design is traditional but the quality of material and workmanship is so high and the conventions are so delicately modified and consistently applied that the result is extremely impressive" - CAMBRIDGE HISTORY OF THE BIBLE p.464. This is a very interesting association copy having been the family Bible in the 18th and 19th centuries of the S.L. Galton family and descendants with extensive records in manuscript on two preliminary blanks recording such events as the marriage of Frances Ann Violetta Darwin daughter of Erasmus Darwin and aunt of Charles Darwin to Samuel Tertius Galton and the birth in 1822 of Francis Galton -- the originator of the 'school' of Eugenics explorer meteorologist psychologist and a central figure in the development of the use of fingerprints as a means of identification. There are two bookplates of the Galton family on the front pastedown and another. GASKELL 26. DARLOW & MOULE 857. RUMBALL & PETRIE 145. ‎Juazeiro do Norte, 30.11.1982. 16 unopend pages; Original printed greygreen wrapper with orig.-woodcut by Batista, rearcover with local announcements; sm.-8vo.(ca. 17 x 11 cm).‎

‎*** A u f l a g e / Z u s t a n d (E- and Condition): --- 2a. Edicao (not in 'Acervo fundacao Joaquim Nabuco'). - A fresh copy as new; more original folhetos by Abraao Batista (8; some not in AFJN), Severino Amorim Ferreira (1) and Severino Simeao (1) in our stock, set-price by arrangement. . . --- 'Folheto' is the smallest form of brasilian privately printed booklets in woodcut-illustrated wraps which usually served as individual 'newspaper' or entertaining leaflets and generally were sold by the authors/producers themselves on public markets (feiras) by lining them up on a string which gave the name 'Literatura de cordel' to the whole genre. 'Folheto' is not only the general term for this unique type of publication but also for the smallest of its kind, the 8-pagers, while the 16-pagers are called Romances' and the largest type (32-pagers) 'Estorias'. The author often sings the beginning of his story, sometimes accompagnied by guitar, to encourage passengers to buy his product. Becoming more and more popular the quality range of this genre spread from trashy tourist items carrying coca cola adverts to intentional serious works of poetry and graphic art while the latter represents a class of its own in popular or naive folcloric art. Originally meant as fast information or entertainment the fragile objects were not supposed to 'live' long or even become collector's items but as they are true documents of local history or of poets early creations this intention has changed over the last years. Especially the early folhetos from the 1970ies and 1980ies are presumably rare even more in a good condition. Abraao Batista was born in 1935 in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará, the origin of the 'Literatura de cordel'. He became one of the most productive artists in the 'cordel-literature'-field and was - still is(?) - certainly the longest active of his kind. With his unique expressionist connotation he developed into a leading figure in brasilian folcloristic graphic art over the years.‎
