Gebwiler, Hieronymus.
Epitoma regii ac vetustissimi ortus sacrae cesaree atque catholice majestatis… Ferdinandi, Boemie regis, Hispaniarum infantis [...] omniumque austriacorum archiducum principumque habsburgensium. Strasbourg, Grüninger, 1527.
4to. LIX (but: 61) ff., final blank leaf. With 2 title woodcuts and 49 woodcuts in the text (including some repeats). 19th century unsophisticated boards. First edition of this popular genealogy of the Habsburg monarchy, published nearly simultaneously with the German translation. The Alsatian Catholic humanist and educator Gebwiler (ca. 1473-1545; cf. ADB VIII, 486f.) was a friend of Jacob Wimpfeling and counted Beatus Rhenanus among his students. The title woodcuts show the Imperial Eagle on the left, holding in its claws a many-headed hydra, and on the right the Habsburg peacock with a rooster and a lion in its claws. The other woodcuts include a half-page illustration of the Imperial Eagle and 48 small portraits of historical personages. - Spine end corner professionally repaired. Some slight duststaining; a faint dampstain to the upper margin of a few pages. A few minor edge flaws and traces of handling, but a fair copy. VD 16, G 594. BM-STC German 334. Muller II, 47, 254. Ritter 944. Ritter Cat. 1070. Schmidt 232. Cf. Lipperheide Ea 1 (1530 edition only).

Gedik, Simon.
Defensio sexus muliebris, opposita futilissimae disputationi recens editae, qua suppresso authoris & typographi nomine blaspheme contenditur, mulieres homines non esse. Leipzig, Michael Lantzenberger [für Henning Grosse], 1595.
4to. (62) pp., last bl. f. With woodcut printer's device on title-page. (12) pp. Boards (c. 1900). Edges sprinkled in red. The two most important literary reactions to the scandalous anonymous anti-feminist polemic, "Disputatio nova contra mulieres, qua probatur eas homines non esse" (no place, 1595; VD 16, ZV 4618), which had denied the humanity of women (and thus their capacity for salvation). The pamphlet sparked a surge of 16th and 17th century satires. The theology department in Wittenberg warned its students against reading the book, while the Leipzig Professor of Hebrew, Simon Gediccus (1551-1631), published an apology of the female sex in which he refutes the pamphlet word for word. - Somewhat browned throughout due to paper; ms. note on last leaf. From the collection of the German lawyer Christian Friedrich Eberhard (1753-1818) with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Both works are very rare; neither one in German auction records since 1950. I: VD 16, G 652. - II: VD 16, W 3701.

"Disregarding the Lübeck Bible, this is the most important woodcut cycle published before the Apocalypse [...] The first fully rounded moral genre pictures in history" (cf. Winkler, Dürer und die Illustrationen zum Narrenschiff [Berlin 1951]). The exact extent of Dürer's contribution to the 'Narrenschiff' woodcuts was long a subject of controversy; since Winkler's work, he is generally regarded as the book's principal artist (cf. Murray, p. 165; see also Strauss, Albrecht Dürer, Woodcuts and Wood Blocks [New York 1980], p. 64-81, who attributes several of the woodcuts to the young Dürer). - II: Bound in the same volume is a very rare polemical work against the Bohemian Brethren. The Viennese scholar Adauctus Voigt called this "one of the most remarkable of books [...] The author, a Dominican and professor of theology, spent nearly three years among the Brethren, probably in disguise, so as to investigate their true religious constitution and customs" (Abhandlungen einer Privatgesellschaft in Böhmen, ed. by Ignaz v. Born, vol. 6 [Prague 1784], p. 344). - Binding somewhat rubbed; spine repaired. Title-page of "Navicula" has old handwritten ownerships (some deleted); numerous old annotations and manicules in the text (mostly slightly trimmed during re-binding in the 18th centruy). The missing leaves 37-40 at the end of the second work are supplied in photocopy. Two leaves of "Registrum Capitulorum" and 1 blank, from another book, are bound between the two works. Altogether a good copy, very slightly browned and stained. I.
