Desilver, Robert.
DESILVER'S PHILADELPHIA DIRECTORY AND STRANGER'S GUIDE, FOR 1835 & 36.
pp. [16](Advertisements), 199, [13] (Important governmental, financial, and insurance institutions); ix, 36 (Will of Stephen Girard), [4] (Testimonial letters for Swaim's Panacea, a patent medicine). The first group of advertisements are printed in blue ink, in a large variety of decorative display type, accompanied with a few interesting woodcut illustrations. 8vo. 225 mm. Juniata Library bookplate (withdrawn). Original printed boards binding, with an advertisement for Desilver on the rear board. Leather spine deteriorated; front board almost detached. Age stain to text. Printed on the front cover: 'Note to Borrowers. In consequence of the numerous applications at the store of the publisher to borrow the directory, and as he has been at great expense and trouble to compile it for the accommodation of the public, he has come to the determination of CHARGING SIX CENTS for every search. Purchasers are earnestly requested not to loan their books.' On the title page is the autograph ownership of: 'Francis Shoemaker, 51 S. Wharves.' He was a merchant with an extensive trade in Cuba, and the Caribbean, and is listed in the Directory. Text printed in two columns. It includes: the names of the citizens alphabetically arranged, with their occupations and places of abode; a list of the streets, alleys, lanes, courts, roads and wharves, banks, insurance companies; national and their societies, literary, scientific and charitable institutions; Custom House Department, Post Office, churches with their pastors and sextons, foreign, consular and other agents, resident abroad and in the United States, &c. There is also a chart of Regulations (for the ringing) of the State House Bell in Case of Fire. Many examples of this directory includes an Almanac, but here that is replaced by: The Will of the Late Stephen Girard, Esq Procured from the Office for the Probate of Wills, with a Short Biography of his Life. Philadelphia: Published by Thomas and Robert Desilver 1832. The controversy over the Will of Stephen Girard (1750-1831) was of great interest in this era. His large estate was divided - with $140,000 given to relatives and charities; $300,000 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania "for internal improvement by canal navigation"; his real estate in Louisiana (208,000 acres) he left to New Orleans; $500,000 he left to Philadelphia to create Delaware Avenue, clean up the waterfront, pave, remove all wooden buildings and other projects to improve the city. The bulk of his estate was left to create what became Girard College, to educate the poor white orphan boys with a trade. His will gives instructions about the College, both physical and administrative. Some of Girard's heirs contested the will in what became a "classic in American legal history, contributing not a little to the clarification of the law of charities" (DAB). Robert Desilver was an entrepreneurial Philadelphia publisher who became famous for his maps, directories, and almanacs. S&S/AI 33704 & S&S/AI 12613; Spear. p. 282. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! JUN5 Box 5

DIBDIN (Thomas Frognall)
A Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany.
First edition, 3 vols., bound in 4, 4to (279 x 185 mm), ONE OF 100 COPIES PRINTED ON THICK AND LARGE PAPER WITH EXTRA PLATES, [4], xxv, [7], 462,lxxix, [1]; [2], 555, [1]; [2], 298; [2], 299-622, lxiipp., with the author's wood-engraved device on each title-page, a wood engraving of the elaborately-quartered coat of arms of the Roxburghe Club on the dedication page, 85 engraved plates ((including the private plate of 'Diana de Poictiers' in vol. 2, which was apparently destroyed after only 50 copies had been printed, and a proof of the 'Prater' plate in vol. 3), 62 illustrations printed on fine and thin "India" paper and mounted on the text leaves, 55 other illustrations in the text, with the additional sixty engraved plates on 52 leaves from Lewis' Series of Groups bound in at the appropriate places as designated by Lewis in his 'Directions to the binder', contemporary notes in pencil to several endpapers and a few within the text, text and plates have staining of varying degrees, pale stain to many lower margins, a little damage to endpapers where bookplates have been removed, full red hard grain red morocco,,covers waterstained, spines lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. Unfortunately this handsome large paper copy has suffered from water damage sometime in the past, additional photographs are available upon request. This set with the additional set of etchings on india paper by George Lewis, of a classic work of the utmost importance for its wealth of eye-witness information and anecdotes about printed books, manuscripts, buildings, other artefacts and people, both from past centuries and from the author's own day, for the extraordinary collection of illustrations, mostly drawn during the tour itself, and finally as a sumptuous piece of book production. As soon as the book appeared, leading scholars derided Dibdin for his lack of scholarship, especially concerning early manuscripts and printed books. But one must distinguish between the extensive and extremely useful information about things and people Dibdin saw during his 1818 tour, and his own interpretations and conclusions, which now serve only as a window to the attitudes of the time. Dibdin's enthusiasm, readable style and entertaining anecdotes, moreover, caught the mood of his age, making the book extremely popular and influential. Lewis' A Series of Groups... was intended to accompany Dibdin's Tour but was rejected by Dibdin as unworthy of his book. Lewis, most perturbed, issued them at his own expense and presented his case in the eight-page Advertisement which was separately printed. Jackson 48; 56; 56n: Windle & Pippin A38a; A44; D13.

DICAS (John)
Directions for Using the Patent Saccharometer, for brewing ale and beer, at all times to the same strength, also shewing the comparative value of malt, &c. Invented by the late John Dicas, and for upwards of sixteen years, made only by his daughter and successor, Mary Arstall, late Mary Dicas, mathematical instrument maker, Liverpool: the only proprietor of the patent, who, for some time previous to the decease of her father, assisted in making the above instruments. The manufactory of the patent saccharometers, hydrometers, and lacto-meters, was for some time carried on by M. Arstall, under the firm of Dicas & Co.
First (only?) edition, 12, [1, list of instruments with prices], [1, blank]pp., recent paper wrappers. John Dicas was a scientific instrument maker, active in Liverpool, between 1774 and 1797. He was succeeded by his daughters Mary and Ann, who continued to operate the business until some time after 1837 when it was then taken over by Joseph Long. In 1780 John Dicas was awarded UK patent 1,259 for "constructing hydrometers with sliding-rules to ascertain spirit strength". (Hopp, 'Slide Rules. Their History, Models, and Makers'. 1999). A printed thirteen-line "Caution" on verso of the title-page warns against instruments on sale in London and Dublin stamped "Dicas" which are not of of her [Mary Arstall] manufacture. Not traced in Copac or OCLC.
