‎Printing images in Antwerp. The introduction of printmaking in a city: fifteenth century to 1585.‎

‎Rotterdam, Sound and Vision Interactive, 1998 Bound in black cloth with orange lettering, illustr. editor's dustjacket, 508pp., 17x24.5cm., 18 col. and 110 b/w ills., as new. ISBN 9789075607130.‎

‎This book discusses the production and consumption of printed images in an urban environment in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, up to 1585. The story begins in the fifteenth century. At some point - no one knows exactly when - prints were suddenly being offered for sale in Antwerp. Initially they may have been brought from other cities by merchants and travellers, but at length the first printmaker established himself in the city. In the sixteenth century Antwerp fast developed into one of the main centres of print making in the western world. The author explores the complex way in which the printed image secured a place for itself in the urban fabric. He reconstructs the different traditions from which the print producers evolved, and explains how existing institutions in the city related to the new medium. He traces the way in which the traditional guilds tried to bring practitioners of this 'singular skill', as it was labelled in 1452, into their ranks, and shows how the government tried to gain control of the new medium. He discusses the interplay between printmakers seeking strategies to market their wares, and a public confronted with an interesting array of cheap new products. The reader is given an impression of the variety of prints produced, which have thus far received little attention in art history. Archival research has generated a good deal of detailed new information on the prices of prints, the numbers of impressions made, the costs of printing and colouring, and so forth. Printing Images in Antwerp is an exploration of the impact of print making in the sixteenth century. It contains an abundance of new information, not only for print historians but for anyone interested in cultural history.‎

‎Summary The arts of the book from central Europe often provide a mirror both for imperial aspirations as well as for the complex pluralities of societies on the ground. The essays in this collection explore material written in Czech, German, Hebrew, and Latin, made for both religious and non-religious contexts in the ninth, twelfth, and fifteenth centuries, highlighting the range and depth of the Central European corpus as well as how integral such material has been to the formation of medieval holdings in America. ‎Summary What did nature mean to ordinary English readers in an age of Enlightenment? What did they read to connect with its meanings and messages? This book surveys the explosion in household advice, religious, self-help, and leisure reading that accompanied urban growth, improving literacy, and a rapidly growing press. It charts the interrelated fortunes of London authors, printers, booksellers, and readers in a revisionist history of cheap print from the Restoration to the French Revolutionary Wars. This is an account of pamphlets and short books that, according to book trade metrics, constituted most of what lower-to-middle class Britons were buying in 1700. Many of these titles were also owned by the rich. Today?s distinctions between the natural, preternatural, and supernatural began to emerge throughout Western Europe at this time. This helped create an intellectual divide between cheap and expensive publications that would have a lasting impact upon Western culture. This book focuses on popular participation in ? and responses to ? that process by reconstructing the production and reception of bestselling print. Publishers are more important to this story than authors because they tinkered with contents and meanings over time. Their wares consequently illustrate changing mainstream beliefs about fact, experience, causation, logic, and authority. By the later eighteenth century, what was produced for a general audience said important things about how English people perceived their identities, communities, and histories. ‎JOACHIM, of FIORE:‎

‎VATICINIA, / SIVE / PROPHETIAE / ABBATIS / IOACHIMI, & ANSELMI EPISCOPI / MARSICANI,... Vaticinii, overo / Profetie / dell'Abbate Gioachino, & di Anselmo Vescovo di Marsico... AND: Andreas ANGELUS: Kurtzer jedoch gewisser und gründlicher Bericht von Johan Hilten und seinen Weissagungen. AND: Giovanni Bernardino BONIFACIO. 3 vol in 1. Miscellanea / hymnorvm, / epigrammatvm, et / paradoxorvm... (1) With engraved title and 34 full-paged engravings, (2) ornamental woodcut title , as well as (3) pictorial woodcut title and 2 full-paged woodcut portraits.‎

‎Sammelband with 3 rare religious treatises, contains a series of prophecies attributed to Joachim of Fiore (12th ct.), as well as apocalyptic visions of the Franciscan friar Johann Hilten (15th ct.) in a protestant pamphlet by Andreas Engel, and finally a collection of songs and rhetorical figures by the protestant humanist Giovanni Bernardino Bonifacio (16th ct.) - Content: Present Sammelband starts with the Bertoni bilingual (Latin, Italian) edition of the »Vaticinia«, that assembles 34 elaborate full-paged engravings depicting portraits of popes in the middle of allegoric, seemingly bizarre scenes showing (pseudo-)prophecies related to them. The engraving title page shows a portrait of Fiore in the centre. The 2nd volume contains a tendentious comment of Brandenburg clergyman and historian Andreas Engel (named Angelus) of apocalyptic visions by Franciscan friar Johann Hilten, who was claimed by the protestants to have been their predecessor in the 15th ct. Engel also quotes prophecies about the fall of Papacy and of the Ottoman Empire. Finally the 3rd volume contains a collection of religious songs and rhetorical figures (epigrams, paradoxa) by the protestant Italian humanist Giovanni Bernardino Bonifacio (16th ct.), founder of the Danzig city library, edited shortly after Bonifacio's dead by Andreas Welsius. - Condition: Spine professionally restored at joints. Title page of »Vaticinia« (1) enforced at margin, one engraving with annotatios made with ink, inside in parts slightly finger and time-stained as well as minimally foxy. Bookblock cut uniformly by the binder, 3rd part with tight cut and therefore minimal loss of pagination at two leaves. - Holdings, Rarity: VD16 quotes 4 copies in Germany for »Miscellanea hymnorum« (Dresden (SLUB), Halle (ULB ), Göttingen (SUB), Wolfenbüttel (HAB), WorldCat/OCLC another additional two copies worldwide (BnF, BL); the same for »Weissagungen«: 5 copies in Germany (Dresden (SLUB), ULB (Halle), Göttingen (SUB), Weimar (HAAB), Wolfenbüttel (HAB) and one copy in Solothurn according to VD16 and WorldCat/OCLC. - References: (1) VD16 O 899; Adams J214; Hohenemser 178.
