Edelstein (1912-1994), who collected and developed the collection and donated it to The Jewish National and University Library was a businessman and a successful lecturer and author of a number of papers and books on the history of chemistry, alchemy and dyeing. Contains b&w illustrations. 335x250mm. 182 pages. Beige cloth Hardcover with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Spine slightly yellowing and faded. Rear endpaper and several last pages bottom corner water-stained - NO damage to text/plates. Pages yellowing. This extremely rare comprehensive catalog of one of the most illustrious collections ever assembled by a single person in any subject, is in very good condition.

Very rare first edition of an early pharmalogical book by the famous French phycisian, naturalist and botanist Guillaume Rondelet (1507-66), professor at the university of Montpellier, best known for his work on fishes De piscibus marinis (1554), the standard work on ichtyology for over a century. He was a good friend of Rabelais, whose character Rondibilis is said to be based on Rondelet, and among his students appear prominent names such as Clusius, Lobel, Gesner and Belon. The present work primarily deals with weights and measures used in medicine, with at the end a 26-page index with about 35 entries per page, listing both herbs and medicines. A second edition was published a year later by Plantin, followed by other editions in 1563 and 1564. - With owner's inscription of Pierre Gauthier (late 19th century?) on flyleaf. Waterstain at the head and fore-edge margin and the binding slightly soiled and rubbed along the extremities, otherwise in good condition. USTC 113136 (5 copies). Cf. With notes on the two unique editions in Westminster Abbey Library, descriptions of the bindings in which they were preserved, and the other items found in these bindings by Howard M. Nixon. The Gardyners Passetaunce is a propaganda poem promoting the newly formed Holy League which was proclaimed on 4 October 1511. It is a simplified version of a densely written Latin tract by James Whytstons which discusses the nature of a just war, the merit of fighting in defence of the Pope and compares Louis XIII of France to various tyrants and persecutors of religion. Pynson, the king's printer, published this 'tabloid' poetic version at the behest of the King and Court to spread the propaganda to a wider less academic public, a second edition appeared, probably in the same year, printed by Goes and Watson. The poem is anonymous but Nixon's essay on the poem's history does provide all the available evidence on the subject and draws his conclusions... An excellent book published by the Roxburghe Club in honour of Howard M. Nixon after his death.
