Smyth, Henry DeWolf.
ATOMIC ENERGY FOR MILITARY PURPOSES. The Official Report on the Development of the Atomic Bomb under the Auspices of the United States Government, 1940-1945. Written at the request of Maj. Gen. L. R. Groves, U.S.A.
pp. vii, 308 + Photographs. 8vo. Original full cloth binding. Original dust jacket with price. Hardbound. Very nice copy. Fifth printing. New and enlarged edition, including statements by the British and Canadian governments. Familiarily known as the "Smyth Report" the first published account of the development of the atom bomb was issued, in mimeographed form for press use, on August 12, 1945, just six days after the first atomic bomb was exploded over Hiroshima. A GPO and a trade edition quickly followed. Smyth, chairman of the Department of Physics at Princeton, gives a remarkably full and candid account of the development of the work carried out by the Manhattan District Project which culminated in the production of the first Atomic Bomb. Sorbin, Arnaud.
Oraison Funebre de Treshaulte et Vertueuse Princesse Marie Isabeau de France, Fille de Tres-hault & Treschrestien Roy Charles. ix. amateur de toute Vertu, & Protecteur de la Foy. Pronõ[n]cee en l’Eglise Nostre-dame en Paris, le 11 d’Avril 1578. Paris, Guillaume Chaudiere, 1578.
Small 4to (160 x 105 mm). 19 ff., plus 1 integral blank, signed A-E4. Woodcut printer’s device on title-page. Bound in late 19th century marbled boards with gilt title label on spine. Slightly foxed; a few traces of humidity to upper corners, otherwise good. Very rare first edition of this funerary oration and poetic tribute to Marie-Élisabeth, Princess of France, who died aged 5 of unknown causes on 2 April 1578. Although barred by Salic law from inheriting the throne in her own right, as the only child of Charles IX and Elisabeth of Austria, she embodied a formidable consanguinity among European noble houses. Her maternal grandparents were Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor and Maria of Spain, and her paternal grandparents were Henry II of France and Catherine de' Medici. Rounding off this Valois, Habsburg, and Medici parentage, her godmother was none other than the Protestant Elizabeth I of England. - When Marie-Élisabeth was just two years old, her father died; her mother returned to the Habsburg court in Vienna shortly thereafter, leaving her mainly in the care of her aunt, Marguerite de Valois, wife of the new king Henry IV. Sorbin thus dedicates the present work in four pages to Marguerite, before choosing as his Biblical starting point Lamentations II, 13. He naturally praises the princess’ illustrious ancestors and gives examples of historical parallels to her untimely death; following this is a 4 page poem ‘Tombeau de Madame Marie Isabeau de France…” which prays for the soul of the dead girl while simultaneously demanding an end to France’s civil strife. - OCLC shows just 1 US copy, at the Newberry; COPAC shows no copies in UK libraries. Pettegree, French Vernacular Books 48338 (erroneously suggesting an earlier edition of 1577 as 48333); on the preface to Marguerite de Valois, cf Vons, Jacqueline, “Dédicace de l’Oraison funèbre et Tombeau de Marie-Élisabeth de France (1572-1578)”.

Stamler, Johannes.
Dyalogus de diversarum gencium sectis et mundi religionibus. Augsburg, Erhard Ogelin & Georg Nadler, 1508.
Folio (215 x 310 mm). (2), XXXII, (2) ff. With a fine full-page title woodcut (210 x 185 mm) by Hans Burgkmair (repeated on verso), incorporating a xylographic title showing the 'Sancta Mater Ecclesia' enthroned with a complex allegory depicted below her, both woodcuts boldly and skilfully highlighted in red. Initials, underlining and rubrication throughout in red. 20th century binding using older vellum. First edition of Stamler's dramatic dialogue comparing the religions of the Tartars, Turks, Saracens and Jews, superbly illustrated by Hans Burgkmair. A prefatory letter contains a very early reference to Columbus and Vespucci. - Hans Burgkmair's magnificent woodcut is an ambitious attempt to reproduce the ideas of the author graphically: it shows a seated female figure representing the Church with the globe as a footstool; she sits before a tent, surrounded by the banners of the Papacy and the Empire. The Pope and Emperor kneel before her, and on a lower step sit four queens representing the four non-Christian religions, each bearing a banner with a broken staff. Below them are the figures of the disputants who take part in the dialogue: Dr. Oliverius, theologian; Balbus, historian; Rudolphus, a layman; Arnestes, an apostate; Samuel, a Jew; and Triphon, natural philosopher. - Burgkmair (1473-1531) was the foremost woodcut designer of the early 16th century in Augsburg and became the chief designer for most of Emperor Maximilian's print projects. "With the year 1508, which shows him at the full height of his power in separate woodcuts, Burgkmair's real period as an illustrator of books begins [...] The frontispiece of Stamler's 'Dialogus' shows an unusual delicacy of feeling in the rhythmical articulation and distribution of the masses and the way in which the difficult allegorical subject is controlled and visualized" (Rupe, "Hans Burgkmair as an Illustrator of Books", Print Quarterly 10.2 [1923], p. 177). - In a letter to Jacob Locher dated 1506 on fol. a3v, Stamler refers to the New World discoveries: "I do not make any mention of the newly discovered islands, but of Christopher Colom, their discoverer, and of Albericus Vespucius; on the discovery of the New World (to whom our age is chiefly indebted) behold what treatise I send you" (transl. from Latin). - Later 16th century ownership inscriptions on otherwise blank last verso. A scattering of small wormholes affecting one or two letters, else very well preserved. VD 16, S 8527. Alden/Landis 508/19. Sabin 90127. Harrisse 51. Church 26. JCB I, 47-48. Burgkmair: Hollstein V, 68.81. Dodgson II, 57.1; 70.7. Muther 858.
