‎SERNA SANTANDER (Carlos Antonio de la)‎

‎M?moire sur l'Origine et le Premier Usage des Signatures et des Chiffres, dans l'Art Typographique.‎

‎8vo, 30, [2 blank]pp., lightly waterstained throughout, orig. drab paper wrappers, bound in patterned paper boards. First edition of a fascinating early monograph on printed signatures, foliation, registers and catch-words in 15th-century books. It is dedicated to the great Belgian collector Charles van Hulthem. Count Serna, who is here given the timely title of "Citoyen", was an important incunabulist and printing historian. He correctly attributes the first use of signatures to Johann Koelhoff the elder in Nider's Praeceptorium 1472, and of foliation to Arnold Ther Hoernen in Adrianus Carthusiensis' De remediis utriusque fortunae 1471. He agrees with Marolles (Recherches sur l'origine et le premier usage des registres 1783) that Sweynheym and Pannartz were the first printers to employ a register [the table in the 1469 Caesar], but it is now thought that the anonymous Hieronymus' Epistolae [Rome: probably Sixtus Riessinger, c. 1468--69] may be the first book to have been issued with one. The author rightly identifies Vindelinus de Spira (and not his brother Johannes) as the printer of Tacitus' Opera [now assigned a somewhat later date than Haebler's 1471], the first printed book with catch-words. Provenance: Bookplate of A. W. Barten. Bigmore & Wyman II, 352.‎

During his stay abroad he became intimate with Curran, Grattan, and other prominent Irishmen, including his cousin, William Conyngham Plunket, afterward lord-chancellor of Ireland. On his return to the U.S. he settled in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and was active in state and local politics. ‎Shakespeare, William; Volk, Kurt H.‎

‎TREASURES FROM SHAKESPEARE. A selection of some of the more familiar passages from Shakespeare, who has done so much to enrich our language and shape our philosophy. Edited by Charles Brodie.‎

‎60p. Printed in red and black. Remarkable black endpapers printed with a black and red mask. 8vo. Original full black cloth binding lettered in gold, and with Shakespeare's autograph embossed in blind on the front board. The original black slipcase is worn at extremities. Designed by Meyer Wagman. Small Limited Edition, but no statement of number. Kurt Hans Volk (1884-1962) was born in Germany, and probably trained as a printer/typographer there. He worked for many years at N.W. Ayers in Philadelphia before starting his own typographic firm in 1927. He widely lectured on advertising typography and authored the important work: "Using Type Correctly." He greatest influence as a designer was probably as a consultant to the Merganthaler Linotype Company. Today he is probably best known for a private series of keepsakes and limited edition books distributed to friends at Christmas. We are pleased to be able to offer one of last of these here. Fine books from earlier Christmas seasons make great gifts today. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! CHRISTMAS/W67‎

‎Shea, John Gilmary.‎

‎A CHILD'S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES. From the Earliest Records to the Present Time. Including the Late Civil War with its Battles and Battle-Fields. ORIGINAL PARTS ISSUE.‎

‎Issued (by subscription) in forty-six eighty (46) original parts, bound in 28 magazine-format issues. 4to. 200 x 285 mm. Numerous engravings, portraits, maps and plates. Though the spines on many of the paper wraps are gone, this set is generally in wonderful condition. Books in parts are works which were published piecemeal (mainly in the 19th century) over a period of months or years. Each unit usually having a separate magazine-like cover. This method of publishing benefited the publisher as it was thought that the price of a weekly or monthly part at one shilling or a quarter was affordable to a wider readership than the price of pound sterling or $ 5.00 for a bound volume. They also qualified for mailing at a cheaper rate. Since they were meant to be bound by the purchaser, very few have survived into our present era. This set is extremely scarce in parts format. This edition apparently not in Arents (1957). **PRICE JUST REDUCED! PARTS 3‎

‎Ars memorativa Gerogii [!] Sibuti daripini co[n]cionatorib[us] et iurisperitis multum utilis et fructuosa. Carmen eiusdem in vita[m] sanctae Annae Heroicu[m]. Sphico annexum. Saphicum Ioannis Murmellii. Saphicum Ioanuis [!] cesarii. Cologne, [heirs of Heinrich] Quentel, 7 Aug. 1506.‎

‎16 pp. With an ornamental woodcut initial on the title page. Papered spine. Second edition of Sibutus's first published work, previously printed by Quentel in March 1505: a treatise on the art of memory. The humanist Sibutus (c. 1480-1528), probably from Tannroda in Thuringia, was a student of Conrad Celtis. Crowned poet laureate by Emperor Maximilian, he practised as a physician and taught rhetorics in Wittenberg, Rostock, Cologne, and Vienna. "This frequently cited and rarely discussed instruction by Sibutus contains within the space of 7½ pages so many obscure precepts, counter-productively mingled with verses by Virgil, Ovid, and others, that it must be quite incomprehensible to anyone unaccustomed with mnemonics. It is apparent that Sibutus employed a very difficult and roundabout method. So as to have no more than 36 mnemonic devices, he used the verse 'arma virumque cano' etc.; for each letter he would imagine a person whose name began with that letter etc. He does not explain how to avoid confusing these persons in case a particular letter occurs more than once" (cf. Aretin, Systematische Anleitung zur Theorie und Praxis der Mnemonik, Sulzbach 1810, p. 194ff.). More of a practitioner than a theorist, Sibutus was proficient in mnemotechnics himself: for Frederick, Elector of Saxony, he recited from memory 600 verses of his "Silvula in Albiorim", a poem praise of Wittenberg. The present volume includes two introductory poems by Johannes Murmellius and Johannes Cesarius, a dedicatory poem to the Lübeck jurist Heinrich Bucholt, as well as Sibutus's own "Carmen in vitam S. Annae". - Slight brownstaining throughout; insignificant waterstain to upper gutter. A single copy in the U.S. according to OCLC (Harvard Med. School). VD 16, S 6262. BM-STC German 812. Panzer VI, p. 358, no. 104. Verfasserlex. II.3, col. 892. OCLC 230985978. Not in Adams.‎

‎ASTROPHEL & STELLA. Edited by Mona Wilson.‎

‎pp. xxxviii, 193. Printed on Van Gelder paper. Deckle edges. 8vo. Original stiff boards with flower dust wraps. Original solander case, nicked at front. Original floral slip case. Limited Edition printed by The Kynoch Press. Number 582 of which 725 copies are for sale in England and 485 for sale in the United States by Random House. First printed in 1591, Astrophel and Stella is an English sonnet sequence containing 108 sonnets and 11 songs. The name derives from the two Greek words, 'aster' (star) and 'phil' (lover), and the Latin word 'stella' meaning star. Thus Astrophel is the star lover, and Stella is his star. Some have suggested that the love represented may be a literal one as Sidney evidently connects Astrophel to himself and Stella to Penelope Rich, the wife of a courtier, Robert Rich, 3rd Baronet. Leipzig: "Gedrukt bey Wilhelm Gottlob Sommer" 1793. Apparently unique this poem pays homage to the duchess Sophie Wilhelmine von Schönaich-Carolath 1764-95 for her visit to the small village of Rochsburg in Saxony. She was a member of the family which owned the famous Schloss Rochsburg situated above the village. It is remarkable that this small village was able to plan and have printed this quite luxurious and attractive work. The front paste-down has a mounted piece of paper with the contemporary inscription "Dies Buch gehört Sophie Wilhelmine Gräfin von Schönburg Rochsburg gebohrne Prinzess von Carolath Schönaich Rochsburg den 5 September 1793." ‎Silvaticus, Matthaeus.‎

‎Opus pandectarum Matthei Silvatici cum quotationibus auctoritatum Ply. Gal. et aliorum in locis suis: necnon cum Simone Januense: ac Tabula. Venice, Simone da Lovere, 12 Jan. 1511.‎

‎Folio (217 x 298 mm). 198 ff. With one woodcut initial. Late 19th c. boards. Edges sprinkled in red. Fine post-incunabular printing of this important medical compendium and pharmacopoeia, replete with Arabic-derived terminology, strongly based on Avicenna, Serapion the Younger (Ibn Wafid), and Dioscorides. Matthaeus Silvaticus, active around 1300, "was one of the most important mediaeval botanists and pharmacologists. His magnificent compilation from works of earlier physicians, with occasional observations and opinions of his own, presents its subjects in alphabetical order, making this effectively a kind of dictionary. The book's principal value lies in the explanations of various specialist terms from all fields of medicine, in particular several of Arabic origin" (cf. Hirsch/Hübotter IV, 117). - Occasional light browning. Annotated throughout in red ink by a contemporary physician's hand. A good copy despite the unsophisticated modern binding. Edit 16, CNCE 69665. Durling 4206. Panzer VIII, 404, 543. Proctor/Isaac 12960. Wellcome I, 5972. Not in Adams, Bird, Lesky, Osler, or Waller.‎

‎SILVESTRE (L.-C.)‎

‎First edition, 2 vols., 8vo, [4], viii, 384; [4], 385-745, [23]pp., illustrated throughout, cont. morocco-backed marbled boards, rubbed, slight sign of tape residue to base of spines, but still a very good copy, uncut, t.e.g. A most important reference book picturing, in full size for the most part, and identifying more than 1300 French printers' devices from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Printers, like other manufacturers, put a proprietary mark on their goods?a design cut in wood or metal, printed on the title-page or at the end. It customarily consisted of a pictorial device, sometimes with ornament, sometimes with a motto; an indication of the printer's identity was often included?his name, initials or a personal sign. ‎(Folheto) Peleja de Severino Simeão com Ana Roxinha [sem indicação de autoria].‎

‎No place, not dated. 8 unopened pages; Original printed cream-coloured wrapper with orig.-woodcut illustration by J. Miguel (man and woman with guitars), rearcover with announcements of L.d.C. by J. Borges, Edson pinte, Artur P. Salles and Antonio A. da Silva; sm.-8vo.(ca. 17 x 11 cm).‎

‎*** A u f l a g e / Z u s t a n d (E- and Condition): --- FIRST EDITION ('Acervo fundacao Joaquim Nabuco' 85.10.553; FC-742). - A fresh copy as new; more original folhetos by Abraao Batista (8; some not in AFJN) and Severino Amorim Ferreira (1) in our stock, set-price by arrangement. . . --- 'Folheto' is the smallest form of brasilian privately printed booklets in woodcut-illustrated wraps which usually served as individual 'newspaper' or entertaining leaflets and generally were sold by the authors/producers themselves on public markets (feiras) by lining them up on a string which gave the name 'Literatura de cordel' to the whole genre. 'Folheto' is not only the general term for this unique type of publication but also for the smallest of its kind, the 8-pagers, while the 16-pagers are called Romances' and the largest type (32-pagers) 'Estorias'. The author often sings the beginning of his story, sometimes accompagnied by a guitar, to encourage passengers to buy his product. Becoming more and more popular the quality range of this genre spread from trashy tourist items carrying coca cola adverts to intentional serious works of poetry and graphic art while the latter represents a class of its own in popular or naive folcloric art. Originally meant as fast information or entertainment the fragile objects were not supposed to 'live' long or even become collector's items but as they are true documents of local history or of poets early creations this intention has changed over the last years. Especially the early folhetos from the 1970ies and 1980ies are presumably rare even more in a good condition.‎
