Hommage à Werkman [Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman]
A posthumous homage to Dutch typographer and artist Hendrik Nicolaas Werkman, publisher of the magazine "The Next Call" and pioneer in the art of avant-garde printing. As a member of the Dutch resistance in World War II, Werkman operated an illegal printing press and was shot by the Gestapo in 1945. His colleagues and peers compiled this homage book more than a decade later to commemorate his work. The book contains both examples of Werkman's own art prints, as well as art and text from the many contributors - totaling around 100 distinct pieces of artwork from all involved, as well as multiple pieces of artistically-arranged texts about (or related to) Werkman. Contributors include F.R.A Henkels, W. Sandberg, Kurt Martin, HAP Grieshaber, H.L. Greve, Riccarda Gregor, Herbert Schwobel, Emil Kiess, Raoul Ubac, Wilhelm Geyer, Walter Renz, Werner Oberle, Fritz Ruoff, and the students of the Karlsruhe academy of arts. It is based on a theory, originated by Thomas Tyrwhitt, that the Sonnets were addressed to one Willie Hughes, portrayed in the story as a boy actor who specialized in playing women in Shakespeare's company. This theory depends on the assumption that the dedicatee is also the Fair Youth who is the subject of most of the poems. The only evidence for this theory is a number of sonnets (such as Sonnet 20) that make puns on the words 'Will' and 'Hues." - Wiki. ‘50 Grosvenor Place London / 18 Nov 1874’ on letterhead of the Athenaeum Club Pall Mall. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. On bifolium. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. Addressed to ‘W Chappell Esq’ and signed ‘W Spottiswoode’. He begins by thanking him ‘for your very handsome present which Mrs Spottiswoode & my self will value very highly’. He is taking it down to ‘our country house’ that evening ‘where it will be much appreciated & where it will find itself in very good bibliographical company’. ‘50 Grosvenor Place [London] / 18 Nov 1874’, on letterhead of the Athenaeum Club, Pall Mall. unknown

First edition, 12mo (154 x 93 mm), 148pp., endpapers renewed, re-cased with new leather spine and corners, original printed boards, uncut, a very good copy. One of the great rarities of local natural history, printed on a home-made printing press at Llanrwst, Conway, Wales. John Jones (1786-1865), printer and inventor, "He kept a paper and bookshop, and printed much miscellaneous work for the locality. Sometime (? before 1817) he constructed three presses to the Ruthven design, so called after its inventor, Alexander Ruthven, which he then used for all his printing work. He also learnt to cast his own type and used many of his own letters and characters for the rest of his life."?(DWB). In 1936 the Science Museum acquired John Jones' press and equipment.
